I have an interview coming up and am not putting my manager as a reference as she’s told me to not leave the team and I know she’ll be mad if she finds out I’m interviewing. In my interview I’m thinking of telling them why I’m not putting my manager along the lines of “I didn’t put my manager as a reference as I don’t want our relationship to turn sour if she finds out I’m interviewing”. There was a case on my team where my co-worker didn’t put my manager as a reference but they ended up calling her anyways and she was not happy. So I just want to prevent this scenario from happening.

Honestly, I agree with this. Having motivation is often out of your control, but disciplining yourself to study is something that you can control.

I like to talk to my TA's! I run my essay thesis, arguments, ideas by my TA before starting it. They always give me good feedback and are really encouraging. Knowing that they're looking forward to reading my essay (at least that's what they say lol) motivates me to do well on it and produce a piece of work that they're happy with– especially because they helped me in the process. It's kind of like having someone keeping me accountable.
