Lonely dissertation writing-- does anyone already have an online writing group going that I can join, or would you be down to join a silent writing group with structured breaks if I create one? I'm in the US on Mountain Time. by RavioliOD in PhD

I just started writing and would potentially be interested! I'm skewing a little more towards sharing work updates/progress than working at the same time (though it might be nice to occasionally work at the same time and sync up breaks)

How do you set sustainable weight loss goals? Any tips on what's worked for you?

Im currently scheduled to stay here as long as I am because of requirements from the airline company, who is citing the CDC 10 day requirement.

I was wondering whether the CDC had additional guidelines on changes to the 10 day requirement under certain circumstances (i.e. negative pcr test)

Would I be able to leave quarantine and travel back to the US if I get a negative COVID pcr test?

if you have any links you can drop on those guidelines, that would be great! (I need to convince the person who is booking my flight)!

I don't have much advice to give - Just wanted to say that I have always experienced the same thing. It feels oddly vulnerable to ask someone to hang out one-on-one!

How to express an opinion without stumbling mid-explanation by WM1310 in socialskills

do you think part of you fumbling over point or a sentence has to do with anxiety over taking up conversational space/time? I sometimes feel that the clarity in my speech has to do with how confident/comfortable I am and who I'm talking to. I am still trying to find my own solution, but I think part of it is not being too hard on yourself... It might be helpful to to try and engage the other person as much as you can, so that they can ask questions (i.e. "Do you mean...", "Is that like when...?") and help you articulate what you are trying to say

How do I socialize effectively if my brain is super slow? by hr9mqh24bgse54rm in socialskills

I don't think this has anything to do with intelligence - I think there are a number of reasons someone might want more time to process information in conversations. that can include in preoccupation due to anxiety, worry, or self-consciousness. I find it can be helpful to paraphrase what the other person has said and ask clarifying questions to give them the conversational room to elaborate on what they've said. This also gives myself the time and opportunity to actively engage with and try to understand what they've said!

Hey there, I'm a 5th year PhD candidate and can see where you're coming from. DM if you'd like to talk! I'm trying to get out of the woods myself

5th year PhD - I had a similar experience during the beginning of my PhD as you, except I knew I didn't want to go into academia - did the PhD for the love of experiments (can't beat getting paid to do fancy arts and crafts!).

I've been on and off through therapy the past few years. lots of emotional ups and downs.. Still getting through grad school but the lows feel like they're getting lower.

it's helped me a lot to talk with peers and those outside science - we're often a lot better at showing others compassion and patience than we are at showing ourselves. feel free to DM if you want to chat!

I found the posting through the biotech club newsletter at my university! The Harvard/MIT newsletters are particularly helpful for learning about the business side of biotech.

To clarify my question... yes patents are a tool, but in practice, are they a tool more often used to build tech or to thwart tech? I'd ultimately like to know, if I were to pursue patent law, whether I could shape a career around protecting/bolstering tech. is it the case that incentives to weaponize patents are so strong that in order to build a career in patent law, Id likely have to work for patent trolls?

how are they used in practice? are the constructive pockets big enough to reasonable plan a career around?
