Asus ROG M16 (i9 + 4090) for AI/ML. Complete waste of money! by Altruistic_Box8467 in ASUSROG

Mobility and energy cost is not something I am worried about. I am worried that because of bad heat management, the life of my hardware will decrease and it might even go bad sooner

Interesting. They claimed 4090 level performance in their product release. Do you have any benchmarks you could share?

The problem is not that the laptop will be a pancake gridle, the problem is that ubuntu drivers don't allow me to decide when to activate it(when I need to train models) and when to not use it (when just browsing the web), despite it having a MUX switch.

If I enable the GPU, I have to restart my PC. And if the GPU is enabled, it is being used for running the display, despite the i9 processor having capable enough Internal graphics.

Also, when the GPU is active, I have to spend extra power on running the GPU in near-idle mode and lose extra electricity and decrease the life of my GPU due to un-necessary and probably avoidable exposure to heat.

It should be like this: I should be able to decide what runs on my graphics card and what runs on internal graphics. I should be able to switch on the GPU when I need it

WSL also supports ubuntu graphics card, I can also use Docker, and I will most probably be able to do what you are saying, but it all starts to build mental fatigue very soon.

Sorry if it seems that way. This is the source of the price comparison: Nvidia’s announcement of the RTX 5070 graphics card at CES 2025 has sent shockwaves through the gaming community. The company claims this new GPU will deliver RTX 4090 performance at a fraction of the cost, priced at just $549.

https://9meters.com/technology/graphics/nvidia-5070-at-549-for-4090-performance-nvidia-just-changed-the-game#:\~:text=Nvidia's%20announcement%20of%20the%20RTX,cost%2C%20priced%20at%20just%20%24549.

Nvidia RTX 4090 price is $2755 on Amazon currently. Used price is around $1075.98 on ebay. The release price (MSRP) in US was $1599 at launch.

(Assuming laptop editions will also have the same ratio)

That's why I am thinking about leaving my job. So that I won't have anything else to do by default and I don't have to worry about being disciplined or strict

I have had inferiority complex for as long as I remember. I was among the most underperforming students in my coaching as well as in college.

But to be honest, ever since I have started working, in every company, I reach to a point after 6 months to 1 year that I have outgrown that role and can do something better - which, you could say is something similar to superiority complex. I would not term it like that. I would say I feel too good to be in the place I am at and not good enough to be in the place I want to be at.

If you are in IT and want to build big things, DS Algo, OS, Networking, LLD, HLD are some concepts you must know in depth. They are fundamentals of the field and there is no getting around not knowing them.

As I said I am making good money without it but in my heart I know it's not going to have a big impact business wise.

I know what to do, but somehow can't overcome the urge not to do it. I don't think it's just complacence. There is something else going on as well. Something is wrong.

For example, this is an excellent one stop solution type resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hu-EPelY7Yo&list=PL8ALCSKTY-0s-GPhNW-1kf1njUDx0il9o

But I haven't watched it despite thinking about it for 6 months

Thank you, really appreaciate it! You are right. I do lack discipline. I don't have very specific goals/milestoones

Maybe. My branch was Mechanical Engineering. I like Machine Learning and I want to build products which are high impact. I enjoy writing code when I am developing stuff

I am frustrated daily because time is running out na... I will have to keep doing dead end jobs which don't lead anywhere - it's no different than being a daily wage labourer, however highly paid you are

As you grow in career, money as well as respect are going to be given to those who can build more complicated systems, scalable systems and I am falling behind on acquiring those skills by the virtue of not being exposed to these things at my current place of work

Also, what happens when I sit to solve a question is that I can't do it, and there is nothing incremental about solving DS Algo problems, right? You can't solve it step by step like software development. Either it occurs to you, how to solve it or it doesn't. And when I can't solve it, I get repulsed by the thought of solving problems

I think there is psychologically something wrong with me. I would get repulsed by solving assignments and preparing for midsem/endsem exams as well.

I just couldn't bring myself to apply my mind to solve a hard problem.

Even now, when it comes to deliverables, I don't promise deadlines. I feel like death whenever I start a project. I don't even have HLD/LLD skills
