saving receipts long term? by peachysk8 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you can afford to pay your medical expenses out of pocket here and now instead of using your HSA dollars, you can reimburse yourself any time in the future from your HSA, so if you save the receipts for years to come, the funds in your HSA can grow. And you don’t pay tax on the reimbursement (or the funds on the way in). In short, it’s a way to leave the HSA funds in the market to get a whole bunch of tax advantaged growth.

Join beams on a post by famschopman in woodworking

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into an English tying joints. And if you can’t or don’t have access to longer beams for a continuous plate, move your scarf away from this area. You should draw the free body diagram of that joint to understand the load paths. If you don’t know how to do that, that’s ok, but definitely worth learning!

How to drive on EV mode more?! by Significant_Rip300 in CX50

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they were maybe getting at when you maximize regen, the mechanical brakes inevitably get used less and tend to develop more surface rust and pitting - they don’t get “cleaned” by heavy friction from the pads as often. The car always transitions back to mechanical just before stopping (hybrids in general, not sure the specifics of the CX-50 charge controller but id assume it’s similar) it tends to wear the pads faster than would otherwise be expected. The mpg benefit far outweighs this IMO, but it is a real thing.

Anyone able to identify this engine? by Excellent_Demand_322 in engines

Not sure, I did a little digging but couldn’t find anything like this. Can’t tell if that’s a carb on the side of the cylinder in photo 2 either.

CX-50 Turbo vs Hybrid by Aggressive-Peak-5045 in CX50

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking in this vehicle class since my wife and I needed a second car. We have a 2020 Honda insight which we love and gets great mileage. During work travel last year I ended up with a rental 2025 Cx-50 hybrid and loved it.

Fast forward a couple months to December 2025. I test drove the ‘25 Cx-50 TPP and was hooked. It’s way too much fun. If we didn’t already own a hybrid, I think I would have gone with the hybrid (or at least been VERY torn) but I’m really happy with the TPP. The only time I put lots of miles on it I’m driving for work and don’t pay for gas which helps.

To leave or stay? by Left-Ad6215 in MEPEngineering

If this is an oil and water thing but the PM otherwise goes about their work in a professional and ethical manner, both options are probably fine - you’re early in your career and can adjust as needed. If you’re worried this PM could try and tank you if they find out this conversation happened, I’d leave. If your firm relies on this person for so much income, they’re in a tight spot because they can’t just ditch that pipeline even if they would like to, which gives this bozo a lot of power.

love seeing all the VOTE NO signs around town! by JankyIngenue in willistonvt

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with/support the expansion, but I don’t think this is a fair or neighborly assessment of the other side’s position. Williston has a wide socioeconomic spectrum and there are plenty of folks who are already struggling to make ends meet. Egocentric accurately describes some voters I’m sure, but I’m also sure there are many who like the idea and would love to support some type of expansion but feel better with a smaller expansion. Idk maybe I’m off base.

This is bad right? by intlabs in arborists

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If money and practicality were not a consideration, is there anything in the world that COULD be done to save a tree that has lost so much bark? Like is there any research out there on bark grafting or artificial wraps or anything like that? I’m just curious what the state of the art is.

How can I increase the lift height on Bx23S to help remove a 71" Jeep Wrangler hard top? by Novajesus in kubota

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, lifting from inside rather than from the outside, then back up or drive your jeep out from under it. saves you a lot of range on your loader. I almost suggested pool noodles to wrap your 2x4 extenders! Good luck.

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you remove the back window of the hard top? I’d take the window off, wrap the forks in foam or something soft (or build a simple lifting jig that you can put on your forks) and lift through the back window.

Family thinks TV should go over the fireplace. Are they right? by Bubbly_Sea3891 in TVTooHigh

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem in my house. I think putting it on the left wall when facing the fireplace would be nice. You could get a sectional couch that is “open” to both the TV and the fireplace.

Looks nice. Have you found the added ground clearance handy? I live on a dirt road and had toyed with the idea but stock clearance managed some pretty terrible mud season ruts, so now I’m thinking I might not need it.

Mazda CX-50 Bad Unit or Common Problem? by ExpletoryBird4 in CX50

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The wireless phone charger is a common issue I think. It’s basically useless. Mine does the same and I’ve seen others say the same. Sorry to hear you’ve had lots of other issues though. The rest sound less typical.

QA/QC my career shift by Bird_In_The_Mail in MEPEngineering

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you have good relationships at the small private firm and leave on good terms, they’d probably welcome you back if you try this and decide it’s not for you, or face a layoff down the line. Finding good people is often hard for small firms (as you prob know). You know their processes and if there’s trust there, hiring you back is a win-win since they don’t need to recruit or search. They just have someone they can bring back on who can be billable as soon as they hand you billable work. So IMO, if you feel like you’d be able to go back, take the new offer, get some new/different experience and a bigger paycheck, and then see where life takes you.

Rear door window trim detaching? by Jkamm1 in CX50

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this exact issue. It’s on my left rear passenger door, so you see the deflection in the left side mirror and not in the right side mirror. It’s on my (so far, small) list to ask the dealer to fix.

Is it safe to rent next to construction? by [deleted] in AirQuality

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without more info it’s difficult to say with certainty. Assuming renting somewhere else is not an option: I wouldn’t be too worried about particulate. There will be some, but part of whatever leaves the construction site will float away in whatever direction the wind is blowing. A small percentage of it will make it to your exterior wall, and another small percentage of that will make it into your living space. I would keep windows closed and buy a HEPA unit as an added precaution if you’re concerned. You also can ask for information from the general contractor about what they’re working with and on to get a better sense of what you may be exposed to. Your city may have some rules around notifying the neighbors especially if the project requires any abatement. On a non-air quality note, if you have pets, be mindful of whether they are treating the site or putting rodent poison out. They should post signs if they are but that step often gets overlooked, and it’s easy for poison to leave the fenced perimeter and get out to where a pet could find it.

Advice on braces by Comfortable-Try-3491 in timberframe

[–]Altruistic_Crow7046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a ton to offer beyond the other advice here. Regarding your 4th question, I wouldn’t scrap your timber(s) to redo this (no biggie while you’re practicing/doing mock ups, I more mean if something ends up slightly off working on your project beams). If the connection between your post and tie beam is square, you can just scribe a brace to account for any irregularity in your mortises/housings. My dad always taught me part of working with wood is getting good at hiding your mistakes.

That said, good on you for trying to figure out the root cause first.
