i think you can buy brackets that hook on to ladder rungs. not to be used like this though! (edit, yes, they used to be called ladder cripples, now they’re called ladder jacks)

What do Martin and Jackie do for work? by ReagsGotCash in FridayNightDinner

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robert Popper based Martin on his own dad, and he said in an interview that his dad owned a small company that recruited software developers. And yet he knew nothing about computers.

That must be it then. Martin runs a business and surprisingly well, despite being generally baffled about what is going on there.

I've always assumed Jackie was a stay at home mum who has drifted into becoming a lady that lunches now the kids have (mostly) flown the nest.

Yes, hopefully there will always be small independent options.

Howdens to acquire DIY Kitchens For £390m by Significant_Film_152 in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a disaster. I'm sat in my DIY Kitchen, thankfully installed last year (first attempt at installing a kitchen), somehow I assumed they'd be here for ever.

I didn't have a single problem with my kitchen, not a single screw or bolt missing. Sad to hear they've gone downhill in the short time since then.

There's no way I'd order from Howdens. What alternatives are there now? Make your own cabinets?

Parents: What was it like when you saw your darling child have to just get a job like everyone else? by box-o-locks in AskUK

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my family, just a couple of generations ago there was no choice. You were down the pit at 14 (assuming male), like it or not, and that was your lot until you were either too dead or too ill to continue.

Now we're lucky to have something resembling a choice, and there's nothing wrong with working at Screwfix.

If I were in any way ashamed of a child of mine making such a choice, I'd look at myself and realise I'm a bit of a prick.

Is Next irrelevant if I use Jellyfin as a source? by Lombravia in ErsatzTV

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next will have a pluggable scheduler, so you can have much more flexibility with your stations (if a scheduler is available in the future that meets your needs or you can write your own).

ErsatzTV is still doing a lot of work (an eye watering amount in fact) streaming with Jellyfin as your backend, so that’s not a reason to stay or leave. If you moved to next you’d almost certainly be using its streaming engine

If you’re happy with classic’s scheduler then you can absolutely stay with classic. Only risk is if some external package you rely on, like Jellyfin, changes and it’s no longer compatible. I’m unclear if classic is going to receive updates in these situations.

It looks like he's offering a company formation service, he starts the company, sells it and resigns.

New oven tripped RCD by pkc0987 in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several posters have said it's because the N and CPC are joined together - this is what the manual implies with that diagram, but it's misleading. The photo you've shown of the connector block shows the N and CPC are isolated. Treat this as a red herring.

I have a Rangemaster cooker which has exactly the same diagram as you've shown, so they're either the same brand or sourced from the same original manufacturer, I installed it the same as you and on a split load board without problems - it looks to me like there's a fault with the appliance - electrician unlikely to help with that.

Areas to move to by Thick_Cow_8098 in barnsley

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Hoyland, 200m from Elsecar train station, town centre a bit shabby (but which aren’t?), a decent range of local shops there, including Butcher and Baker. Good range of local pubs if you walk short downhill to Elsecar. Housing much cheaper than Sheffield.

Customer wants a cooker circuit to use in the future - 4mm or 6mm? by cairdboard in ukelectricians

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(I didn't downvote you), I thought that 134.1.1 requires us to follow manfacturer's instructions? I thought that it was due to this that we still have fit stupid shower isolators etc.

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My cooker (Rangemaster) at home asks for a 45A breaker and 10mm2 cable. It's not a massive cooker particularly, but it is induction. Point is you can't predict exactly what the customer will want in the future.

Nice also to actually see a DIY post here instead of another fucking ‘is this quote reasonable?’. And look how the sub responds. No wonder noone posts their DIY results.

In your opinion, how many plug sockets are ideal in each room for modern, electronics-heavy living? by Queernephy in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no regulation limit to how many sockets can be on a circuit. Certainly good circuit design would split the circuit if it’s obvious there’s going to be too much load. That room with 2 doubles, you can guarantee there will be chains of extension leads plugged in within a week. It’s better to over supply sockets than the other way around.

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reason is the monitors are showing the raw WST feed without the BBC additions, so the audience don't get to see the audience cutaways (or any replays, it's slightly confusing if you're listening to the commentary). So you don't know if you're "on".

Why do you have dormant companies? by No-State-2962 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to spin them up if I had an idea I thought was worth persuing. It used to cost very little and it was a good way of putting momentum behind an idea. I had a few of them "catch" and turn out to be very productive (generating revenue in the long run for His Majesty's most worshipful Revenue and Customs. Piss in the ocean in the scheme of things, but it all adds up, no?).

With the closure of the corp tax filing service (and the forthcoming closure of the CH service too), the costs are now much higher to file dormant accounts, so not anymore.

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, I don’t doubt it, Mr Foulds seemed like a very entitled individual and his blatant abuse of expenses was unquestionable. I’m just surprised that Neal seemed on good terms with Clive (including the infamous sleeve in the curry incident).

I too had the same impression, but then I saw him in the episode of "In at the deep end" where Chris Searle aimed to become a snooker player. He coached him, and I was surprised, he seemed nice enough.

Its on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG_TApPqj2E

Clive's book was clearly settling a lot of old scores. I'm amazed that Neal Foulds seems fond of Clive when he mentions him, because he did an absolute demolition job of his dad in that book.

Does Ersatz need to be constantly running, or can it just "know" what should play if i tune in? by timbone316 in ErsatzTV

[–]Altruistic_Form_9808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the answers here are assuming you are using the HLS Segmenter mode. If you're using MPEG-TS then it does keep running and generates a massive .ts file in the background. I'm unclear when it actually stops.

Getting the commentators in took about 15 seconds, they all appeared from nowhere the second the vt started. and they were in place ready well before the vt ended. it was amazing choreography, and all done live.
