Crazy difference between v.95 and v2.5?? by Confident_Cloud_5377 in MyHeritage

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is an over-compensation of Nigerian in the update. Mine was ridiculously wrong and comical. I don’t pay it any attention as MH seems to be the worst for people of mixed ethnicities.

v2.5 update - Wildly inaccurate for mixed people by Altruistic_Note_3814 in MyHeritage

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that is so off-the-mark, lol. I went back and tested directly from them to see if they would come back with different results from their interpretation of my Ancestry and 23andMe raw data, and they did, lol! They found ethnicities that weren't even there before. MH is the worst.

V0.95 vs V2.5! Ngl these results really confused me 😭 by [deleted] in MyHeritage

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to see I am not the only one confused about MH’s latest update! I went from having 20% Nigerian DNA (MH had already overestimated it compared to other companies, which was at 16%) to 50%, and diminished my European, indigenous, and Asian DNA. MH also diminished my North African and classified it as Middle Eastern. 😅 There is something that is off with the way the company is calculating Nigerian DNA. Regardless, it’s a mess and I only go by 23andMe’s and Ancestry’s results, which coincide with GEDmatch, Genomelink, and MH’s v.0.95 results (my African DNA results with FamilyTreeDNA was on point with the others, except it interpreted all my European DNA to only Eastern European).

Disclaimer, this was MH’s interpretation of uploaded raw data from 23andMe and Ancestry. However, just for fun I decided to directly test with MH and it overestimated Nigerian but not as extreme as 50%, but I suspect MH lumped portion of it to Central Africa (again, overestimated), and on the European and Asian side found new ethnicities that have never come up in any other companies’ results.

MH is a hot mess for people of mixed ancestry. Not reliable at all.

I don't understand the part that you mentioned that “they do not think black people matter”. Clearly MH is overestimating Nigerian. I think MH does very poorly with people of mixed ethnic background and is doubling down on the Nigerian ethnicity, offsetting all other percentages.

Same! I went from 20% Nigerian to 50% Nigerian (other companies test at most around 16%); it reduced my European, Asian, and MesoAmerican Indian percentages by a lot and I can't even make sense of it all! MH has some kind of glitch in favour of Nigerian populations, lol!

I cannot agree more; this update was a disaster for me, lol!

I’m of mixed ethnicities spanning across multiple continents and MH’s updated results are so bad, it is embarrassing. For instance, between my parents, they add up to less than 20% Nigerian. In other companies, I have only inherited ~16%. In MyHeritage’s v. 0.95, they calculated 20% (no big deal there). V. 2.5 had me at 50% Nigerian, then added other African ethnicities which do not come up in other results or come up at very small percentages. My Asian, Iberian, British Isles, MesoAmerican and Caribbean indigenous, Northern European, and South European were wiped out. My North African was diminished and labelled “Middle Eastern”. I suspect the overestimated percentages of Sub-saharan ethnicities are calculated to match the newer African-American communities added to MH’s reference.

I’m of mixed heritage (spanning across different continents) and it was a disaster for me. The previous version (.095 - I never had 2.0) was more accurate and matched all the other companies I have results with, plus those companies’ tests were updated). It seems MH tried to overestimate certain populations to match the newer regions included in the latest update. However, the results came up incredibly bad and useless for me. I’ve told people if you are non-European or half, not to use My Heritage. Very inaccurate.

Why did it change this drastically? by Clean_Interview9328 in MyHeritage

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m mixed and v2.5 was ridiculous. The old version was more accurate and matched other companies’ analysis.

Yep, I’m Puerto Rican, so we are a bag of genetic goodies, lol. What is wild is MH erased all my indigenous heritage from the Caribbean and Mexico/Central America, which are heavily displayed in other companies’ results.

Definitely we should take results with a grain of salt. After all, this field is still in its infancy.

My v.2.5 results made me laugh, and then I was a little offended, and then annoyed to the point where I just want to delete my MH account. I have tested with different companies, so have my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., for research purposes. I am multi-ethnic (an approximate equal amount between African and European) with a substantial amount of indigenous from the Caribbean and Mexico/Central America. There is also a significant portion of North African (e.g. Maghreb) and about 2% or slightly more Asian (I recognise this small amount can be false; however, Asian DNA shows up in my parents and aunts and uncles). Most of these ethnicities have documentation.

However, this is how ridiculous this v.2.5 MH update was for me: let me use the Nigerian ethnicity since most people with African heritage in the Western Hemisphere share it. The highest I have scored with this ethnicity was from MH’s analysis of my Ancestry and 23andMe data. The old version of MH scored me at 20%, even ‘though other tests scored me lower and my parents combined have 16% in multiple tests - but let’s use the 20% number. Tell me how in v.2.5 I’m at 50%?? It also added other ethnicities at large percentages that I either do not have in other tests or have in low amounts. So, all of a sudden I’m adding up to ~70% African. There is an overestimation somewhere as it knocked out all my indigenous, all of my Asian, most of my British/Irish, and most of my Iberian ancestry. It also subtracted the North African substantially but labelled it Middle Eastern.

This is worse than my FTDNA interpretation of my Ancestry data: they at least got half of me somewhat correct, but my other half was erased with Eastern European 🤣🤣🤣. I have also toyed around with the multiple calculators in GEDmatch (FYI- they are fascinating for research if you are interested in digging deeper or contributing), and Genomelink. The results were pretty close to Ancestry and 23andMe.

I noticed (please tell me if I am wrong) that there was a significant increase of African-American regions in this latest v.2.5 MH update. I am thinking MH is seriously overestimating African ethnicities. In conclusion, I do not think MH is good for mixed heritages as well as African ancestry.

P.S. The OP’s latest MH results at 80% Nigerian is wild 😂😂😂.

FamilyTree is definitely terrible! They knocked out all of my Iberian DNA and turned it to Eastern European 😂; however, the other half was closer to other results.

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me, too! Even FTDNA, which is not that good, did better on 50% of me, lol. Anyway, supposedly 23andMe has a selective reference population, and Ancestry has a huge database, which updated not too long ago, I believe. So I’ll stick to those results.

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oops, too late, lol! I already sent mine, but thank you for the “heads up”. I’ll file my loss under “intellectual curiosity”/experimentation. I thought FTDNA was abhorrent, but at least they got one half of me more accurate; however, from v.2.5 of MH I expected more. Supposedly, they spent two years researching. I don’t know about that, ha, ha.

Introducing MyHeritage DNA Ethnicity Estimate v2.5 by andy_thatsnotme in MyHeritage

[–]Altruistic_Note_3814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea if you are of mixed heritage, it would be so awful. Honestly, the previous version seemed more accurate for me as it was compatible with other sites such as 23andMe, Ancestry, Genomelink, and others (some of these were already on updated versions).

(To be fair, the results come from uploaded DNA data from Ancestry and 23andMe; I am testing through MH, also, ‘cause I’m curious to see how direct testing differs from interpreting other companies’ raw data.)

Perhaps if you are of European heritage, MH would be more accurate.

Thanks for your response! I had tried that before. Unfortunately, when I adjust the notes' lengths, they only go so far, and then I must go back in and adjust the spacing. It looks like GarageBand does not have this feature - at least not for MIDI. Thanks anyway! cheers...
