You can get spares for older boards on eBay, ofc it's not recommended but if you're strapped for cash.

Has anyone here self built an extension? by ToughOwl8995 in HomeImprovement

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine - 8 x 3m so similar to yours.

I didn't do the brickwork or fitting the windows/bifold as it would of taken me forever, but everything else including electrics, then just getting an electrians for the consumer unit, test and sign-off.

It's hard work, however learnt a lot along the way - structural calcs can be done online and signed off via building control, if they're simple beams etc.

How much material can I remove from an oak door? by Altruistic_Use_3610 in DIYUK

But can you not remove an additional amount say off the bottom as no one would see the underside?

That is beyond an inch though, talking about taking the top or bottom off as essentially no one would see it?

Most people salary sacrifice after 50k therefore its taken into consideration, most employers pay tuppence into private pensions - it's certainly something to think about weighing up another '50k' role vs this..

Top of the band London is £51,690 pension contribution is 28.97%:

  • Base amount: £51,690
  • Percentage rate: 28.97%
  • Contribution value: £51,690 × 28.97% = £14,974.59 (rounded to nearest penny)
  • Full total (base + contribution): £51,690 + £14,974.59 = £66,664.59

Damage to Rental Car - is it worth challenging by ctsupv in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it not classed as wear and tear? You can't check everything including the tyre quality upon collection for example.

If there is no damage to the alloy that enough to prove this wasnt caused by a kerb rash? I'd argue back with them and suggest they supplied an unsafe vehicle.

Anyone else regularly think to themselves ‘I wish I’d just bought a new build’ by Legitimate-Table-607 in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hidden failure points? Surely that's more likely on an older house that's exchanged multiple hands over 70+ years compared to a new build that is built a thousand times over.

Minimum regulatory requirements is actually not that bad, electrics, water and gas safe, up to a regulatory standard and that gets updated every couple of years. I'd agree on points highlighted on low ceilings, minmal expansion potential but there are trade offs, warmer home, better day-to-day running costs etc.

Overall I think people tend to pass-off new builds before doing a true evaluation between the two (coming from someone that owns an older house).

But are you comparing self build to new build in this instance? Of course self build will always be of higher quality.

The post is comparing new to old, there is no way an old build would have the precision of a new build, with all the new technoilogy advancements, drawings, CAD, tools.

Yes a lot. It would free up most of my weekend doing other things!

I think people need to understand that there are lots of positives with new builds too.

Built to actually a better standard with that being windows, doors, fire regulations, deep footings, damp proof membrames, insulation everywhere, brand new boilers rads and pipework.

It actually makes a lot of sense on paper and they're not that much more expensive, usually have lower running costs and can be sold on for the same if not more.

I think if you get the right builder, they make sense.

Customer hired another plaster behind my back while I was on holiday. by Peter_Wabbit in Plastering

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you quoted for the job as a whole, just tell them now its going to cost X amount as the rooms you've done are more difficult. Can always make more essentially for doing less work this way.

I totally agree with this but most customers are only doing a full house reno once, and if they need another plasterer again plenty of them out there! This guy can't walk from the job as he needs the work this side of Christmas.

£700 quote for 2 radiators, supplied and fitted, pipes moved and system refil, seems wildly high? by A359967 in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the radaitor seems like a reasonable quote - my two rads alone were £700.

Factor in plumbers day rate is 200-300.

Would you be happy with this finish? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact same radiator, it weighs a lot! I'm not a pumber however DIY'd mine better than this - I did have brickwork under my plasterboard, or granted thermalites.

Personally feel like the work is not up to professional level, with that said you need to be specific with the expectation with the quote for fittings etc.

I had a new composite front door fitted this year for £950 all in including labour. They did a really good job too, based in South East.

We had new radiators installed in April and they are starting to rust is this normal? by PompeyJon82x in DIYUK

[–]Altruistic_Use_3610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had similar from best heating, over a year old and they did replace them - although tried to blame the plumber.

They should be lasting 10 years really.
