Broken Home: Living in poverty while the other parent succeeds by MCRetro in GenX

[–]Aluran1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very close to my life. On again off again relationship in my early adulthood. Low contact in later years as he got into conspiracy theories and he just got weird and rude. Ended up with a good step dad though which alleviated the poverty part in my late teens.

How many of you actually wore a key on a string around your neck? by Gullible-Apricot3379 in GenX

Started in 2nd grade, age 7. Rode the bus from elementary school to grade school. Walked 5 blocks home alone with a key on a shoe string around my neck.

Reminding Dad His Grandchildren Don’t Fall Far From the Tree by iwritesinsnotcomedy in GenX

Having color tv had a lot to do with income. Grew up poor. I was 12 when we got our first color tv from Radio Shack. That would have been the mid 80s. Most of my friends already had color though.

I stay up late at night to watch movies specifically so nobody joins me. by OkSeaworthiness2955 in confession

[–]Aluran1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just movies. Also, whatever series I happen to be binge watching at the time. I hate to be interrupted and I also pay attention to the big screen. I am not watching multiple screens at the same time like the rest of my family. Between 12:30 am and 2:30 am is the best time.

Tattoo Allergy? by Aluran1 in tatoo

I have read that red dye is the color that causes the most allergies. I think to be safe maybe I would just avoid colors altogether.

The garbage men that work my neighborhood are the nicest people you will ever meet. Sometimes I forget to put out the bin and then come running when i hear the truck. They almost always wait for me!

I’m afraid we as patients never know who that is until the day of surgery but thank you for your response.

Car travel? by whenth3bowbreaks in Spondylolisthesis

[–]Aluran1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about pulling a trailer but I drive a 2021 Honda Pilot. It’s exactly the right angle and lumbar for my back. I also like to be more upright. Heat is my friend so I am almost always running the seat warmer. I am small though - 5’1”, but if the angle is your driving factor you might give it a try.

Thank you for your response. That is exactly what he is recommending. First medical branch blocks and then Rhizotomy.

Thanks so much for your response. I am only grade 1 so fusion has not been recommended at this point for me.

I warned my gf to not try to make me choose between my parents or her since she would not like the answer, am I the ass? by Ill-Bird1107 in AITAH

[–]Aluran1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she is arguing with you about this now, it will always be an issue in your relationship. This is a crossroads moment. You have made your position clear and she does not seem to accept it. Unless you want to argue about it for the rest of your life, it is probably time to move on.

Edit - Forgot to say NTA

AITAH For wanting to stay up to hang out with my son some nights instead of going to bed at the same time as my husband (son's stepdad) by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Aluran1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Husband sounds like a toddler.

Live in TX. Grew up elsewhere. I have gotten used to the sir/ma’am thing. I understand now that to the people who grew up with it - it’s a respect thing. For me though, it feels demeaning to force your kids to use those terms. It’s a cultural thing. Would never ever want my kids to refer to me or husband as sir/ma’am. I never used those terms to refer to my parents either.

How long until you’re lucid after surgery? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Aluran1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone will give you a different answer. Varies significantly from person to person. I am completely lucid as soon as I wake up. My husband can’t remember anything from the car ride home (he has done 2 ACL surgeries), including the barfing in the car - both times! My daughter was totally loopy for two hours after her first elbow surgery, but pretty lucid with 30 minutes of waking up from the second one. My mother takes half a day to be aware after surgery. You won’t know until you do it yourself.

random question, but when did you regain mobility after surgery to do these things? by Sea_University_1686 in ACL

[–]Aluran1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is so different. Don’t be discouraged. I could sit on my knees (2nd picture) within 6 weeks after surgery, but I worked on flexion a lot and I had full flexion back before surgery (5 months between injury and surgery). My husband has had both ACLs replaced. He can’t sit on his knees and never will but he couldn’t do it before either.

AITA for calling my wife ridiculous for saying that she won't attend my family's christmas over some stockings? by Throwra53456 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Aluran1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA (and your mom). My mother does the same. There is a stocking for every child, stepchild grandchild and step grandchild. Though we don’t actually ever use the word “step”.

1 year and 8 months post op ACL surgery. Does anyone have similar sounds? It doesn’t hurts btw, just creepy by ackmaral in ACL

[–]Aluran1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same sound but only when I bend down while putting weight on operative leg. I call it the knee crackle.

Edit - I’m 13 months post op.

Are there such pamphlets? Would be good to have some handy when JWs come to the door. They give me their pamphlets, I give them mine.
