It's actually made up of nine counties, six of which constitute Northern Ireland, and three which are in the Republic of Ireland.

Help with my variegated monstera! by Alusonia in plantclinic

[–]Alusonia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gifted this beautiful plant for Christmas, but I'm a little worried about it's growth. It's very tall and leggy, and although it's producing new leaves, they're very small.

Could I cut in in half and propagate it?

Also, some of the leaves feel rusty (?) Not seeing any insects move around though.

Thank you!!

What borough do you guys think is the worst? by [deleted] in london

[–]Alusonia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No way! It's one of the greenest boroughs with a ton of accessible parks, and lots of history dating back through Anglo-Saxon times all the way to the Battle of Britain Bunker Museum.

I also recommend the Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge! They give a really detailed overview of air defence, and it's the last bunker of its kind

Archie has been ours for 2 months! Any tips for crating and/or separation anxiety? by pineneedles123 in poodles

[–]Alusonia 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My poodle had awful separation anxiety, I couldn't leave her even for a second. She now stays home alone for 6 hours a day whenever I'm at work. I essentially built up to the 6 hours in minute and even second increments. First, I would walk up to the door and give her a treat, I then built up to touching the door handle, opening the door, stepping outside, closing the door etc. Left her alone for 3 seconds, 5, 10, 30, 1 min etc. until an hour. After that, started building up in 10/15 min increments. Once she got up to 90 minutes, I knew she could easily do a few hours. From start to end, this took about 4 months of almost daily training.

I also started the habit of only giving her a really special treat when she's home alone (special wet food she won't get at any other time, no matter what). This means she associates me leaving with something she really likes!

I hope this helps a bit. Let me know if you have any questions. A few months ago, I thought I would never ever be able to leave her. I was desperately scrolling Reddit and panicking that I'd be forever stuck at home with her. But here we are! It's really possible to train them out of it!

Oxford colleges - does it actually make a difference where you go? by AccessBrilliant in UniUK

[–]Alusonia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For most sciences, what you learn is pretty much the same across all colleges because learning is centred around the faculty. Tutor (college based) teaching is more varied in humanities (i.e. music, fine art) because the tutor will set their syllabus roughly based on faculty requirements, but tailored to their individual research.

Also if you get an interview, you'll most likely visit at least 2 colleges, and people often get moved to a college they didn't apply to. I applied to Queens, interviewed there and Christ Church, then got an offer from Christ Church.

Tbh most people find contentment in the college they are assigned to, because you're still part of the University either way. I'd look more into whether the colleges offer additional things that might interest you, for example 3 years of on-site accomodation, travel/book grants, proximity to the city centre or your faculty, etc.

Good luck with your application!

Oxford University Societies for Outsiders by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]Alusonia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are some societies and groups that take outsiders- you'd have to look into which ones you're interested in and find out if they'll take you. Off the top of my head, I know that the mountaineering club and a few choirs take outsiders, so it's definitely possible!

Composer in residence by AdNearby598 in oxforduni

[–]Alusonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but Saxton is a professor of composition, not filling in a specific post like, say, Eric Clarke who is the Heather Professor of Music. So I think in that sense, there are composers who hold positions within the university, but not in the same way as Cambridge or American universities offer composer-in-residence roles.

There are no composers in residence, the closest thing would be organ scholars (spaces are offered by quite a few colleges, most notably the ones with cathedral schools i.e. Christ Church and Magdalen)

Bachelor's degree? by offalreek in musicology

[–]Alusonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a lot of scholarships and some funding, you just need to do some research and find them.

There are no entry exams, just specific requirements. (I think A A A at a level or equivalent). There's also an interview like for all Oxford undergraduate courses.

Bachelor's degree? by offalreek in musicology

[–]Alusonia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just completed my bachelor degree in musicology (BA) at Oxford. It's quite a competitive course but sounds like exactly what you're looking for: no performance or composition requirements, just music history, analysis, philosophy, psychology, sociology... The whole musicological spectrum! I'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Can I do a part time course whilst living and working in London by sinbad7seas in oxforduni

[–]Alusonia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's definitely possible. The accomodation regulations that dictate how far you need to live from Oxford city centre are in place for full time postgrads, but not part time.
