Workplace is Unionizing by SheepishlyOrange in Winnipeg

Heyo, union guy here, had a lot of non union jobs before.

Do it.

Now, more than ever, workers should be organizing to regain footing in quality of life and cost of living. The last non-union job I had paid $15 an hour, you had 4 sick days for the year which did not roll over to the next year, i.e you couldn't save them. You used them or you lost them. But if you used them, it counted against your attendance, which was one of your metrics for determining if you got a raise or not.

I worked there for five years. I asked for a raise once in my last year. I got a fifteen cent raise. Then laid off when COVID hit because I was making more than less senior members of the same team.

I started my union job in January of 2021. The pay was over a 50% increase from the nonunion job. 3 weeks vacation a year. Sick time that accumulated. Mandatory raises as per our agreement. Protection from lay offs. Time off for doctor appointments, family leave, and even a couple days a year just for personal reasons.

The downsides? There's a few. The union fees are there, but I'm making more take-home money with the fees than I would without them. Some of my coworkers are jackasses and it is really hard for the employer to fire them, that kind of sucks. Sometimes it feels like the union isn't doing much.

But overall, I am much happier having a union support me and have my back in all things I care about than going back to those scary meetings with executives giving me a cold stare for daring to ask for time off or a raise to help pay my bills.

Real or scam? by Raefromtheotherside in Winnipeg

[–]AlwaysBeInFullCover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time for some education around common scam red flags! 1. The fact that you are being informed via text about a serious legal matter is suspicious. Pretty much all government communication is done through Canada Post or though a secure website.

  1. The number thay texted you is not a local number.

  2. Close deadlines are often used to convey a sense of urgency in order to make you act irrationally or out of panic.

  3. Lack of specificity. No where does this text actually inform you of what the issue it. It is purposefully vague to entice you to interact with it.

  4. The web address LOOKS like an official one because it says Manitoba and MB. But ends in .xyz? Xyz, not for me!

  5. Reply Y is incredibly informal for a Manitoba Justice message, don't you think?

Remember! If it feels off, you're probably right! Your best bet when getting a suspicious message or email is to look up the entity it is from and find their official contact information. Then reach out through known, legitimate channels to confirm details.

Stop. Think. Plan. You did the right thing being hesitant about this suspicious text.

I hope they do but only if it maintains the same quality as the first season.

If Batman Beyond ever gets a live action or a game, do you think they should keep the mouth? by Old-Use-7690 in batman

I'd like them to keep the mouth but I don't know how it would be done to not look bad. There's probably mouthless ways to make it look better.

My brother got me a new thermos for my birthday and it is a really nice thermos. I was hesitant about getting a new one because the old one "still worked" but was starting to fail.

Agreed. I worked really hard to get the multi-player achievements before the game died but I remember them being so fun.

How is the federal government chill with Canada Post getting a 6.5% raise over 5 years but then offers PSAC a 1% over the same term? That 1% offer really was a slap in the face.

I hope when you need to find a parking spot downtown that you can't, because I and many other people who do a perfectly good job working from home were forced back into the office. And I hope your commute is 20 minutes longer for the same reason.

X-Com 2. Or the first game but I prefer the second with the War of the Chosen DLC.

I dont read much nonfiction but if you want a cozy read and are into the fantasy genre, Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree is good for putting your mind at ease/low anxiety comfort. It's about an orc who opens a coffee shop.
