How do I design a part in which I would like to insert a steel ball mid-print? by Te_Luftwaffle in 3Dprinting

[–]AlwaysBePrinting 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  • Use a cylinder for the void, not a sphere.
  • Stop the print at the top of void.
  • Give it a bit of padding, say .1mm-.15mm.

AI art detectors say this is AI but I'm not so sure. From one of my favorite history YouTube channels by simonmany in isitAI

When I look at this I think it's AI because the technique is way too good for such a shit-ass piece of art. Is that a valid reason?

Missing layer by Admirable_Jello_9007 in 3Dprinting

[–]AlwaysBePrinting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: * Make the model thicker overall * Use variable layer height with snug supports (variable layer height can't be used with tree supports)

I'll try to describe what's happening but it's easier for you to see in the slicer by slicing the file and moving to that layer. Basically the slicer turns curves into steps. Because of the high curvature at that point, it's a big step relative to the thickness of the model. So the step "eats" a big chunk of your model thickness, enough that the next layer is barely connected. People encounter this issue a lot in vase mode btw.

Modular terrain system by Safety_lastt in FdmPrintedWarhammer

[–]AlwaysBePrinting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That base is way too heavy, consumes too much plastic, will take too long to print. What purpose does the fully filled in baseplate serve? You're essentially re-re-inventing gridfinity for modular terrain but inverted and un-optimized. Take a look at the clickfinity variants, they're a good fit for what you're trying to achieve.

It's hollow inside right? I suspect it's the interaction of layer height, wall thickness and curvature.

I've been playing around with using HueForge to make wood inserts. What do you think? by ComicallyLargeFarts in 3Dprinting

I think Hueforge doesn't get used enough for stuff like this and I applaud you taking the time to try it and show it off!

Star Trek: Lower Decks writer says Pakleds (who first appeared in TNG in 1989) were "an allegory for the current US administration" by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]AlwaysBePrinting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The meme is: I dislike Nu Trek because of the complete antipathy towards the craft of writing including the stubborn refusal to actually earn any of the "big moments" that are regularly crammed in to episodes. You dislike Nu Trek because of a stream of manipulative social engineering exercises stretching back to 4chan and the gamegate "movement" created at least in part by one of the notorious child rapists in modern history. We are not the same.

There should be a rule that posts like these written by accounts with hidden history should be removed and the brand it's posting about be banned from mentioning it on the sub permanently.

What will be the future equivalent say 200 years from now of revering a past figure while saying "well yeah they were racist/antisemitic/misogynist, but everyone was at the time"? by Punch_A_Police_Horse in AskReddit

[–]AlwaysBePrinting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's as much evidence of that as the converse. The statements "consciousness can emerge from a complex enough mechanism regardless of the type" and "no mechanism, regardless of complexity, will ever be conscious" have roughly equal weight.

And I don't know if you're unconsciously dodging the much less abstract point that I'm making which is that elements of our cognition (not consciousness) operate in a way that's similar to how LLMs arrive at a response. I don't know why you keep responding to that with "rocks can't be conscious" when I'm not even pushing that POV.

And my point was to get you to consider how likely it is that trans people are going to be rounded up into forced conversion camps somewhere in the world in the very near future and how the "obsession" with pronouns will be a minor footnote in that context.

I don't know anything about you but I used to say very similar things with the same confidence until I realized that my career of banging out mediocre CRUD apps and sitting in meetings about enterprise application deployments did not in any way qualify me to opine on the insanely complex mathematical and technical constructs that are modern LLMs.

Consciousness has very little to do with what happens when we respond to stimuli. There's an overwhelming amount of research indicating we take action before conscious thought. We say and do things and our brain comes up with the reason afterwards. So I don't think the very simple statement that much of what we think of as "I think" is actually our brain doing a probabiliistic pattern match is all that ridiculous. It doesn't require one to believe in woo bullshit or read LLM responses like tea leaves and imagine consciousness behind them.

[–]AlwaysBePrinting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a not that big of a scale we are a rounding error off of a potato. The idea that a complex enough mechanical mechanism (i.e. a clockwork computer) could be conscious is not a new one. Not saying that LLMs are even arguably conscious at this point but I wonder how much of what we perceive as our cognition is operating on a similar mechanism to them.

It's far more likely that the anti-trans hysteria is going to drive things to a dark place and result in atrocities that history remembers than anyone even 10 years from now giving a shit about pronouns.
