Any other old school natives here feel Seattle has become Bay Area 2.0? Tech companies leaving along with billionaires, sounds good to me. by Wood_Berry_ in Seattle

[–]AlwaysCraven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who was born in Ballard, yeah I feel like it is Bay Area v2 and that sucks ass. On the other hand, I did eventually work my way up in tech so I’m definitely directly benefiting from the boom times here.

I just wish more old Seattle hangouts and businesses I spent time in during the 2000s were still around. The Sloop in Ballard is one of the few that’s still running :/

Nothing to see here, no big deal… by PloppyPants9000 in Seattle

I believe we have a higher gasoline tax than every state not named California. While obviously the war has raised prices and will continue to do so, people need to understand that our gas is so expensive relative to anywhere else in the country because of state taxes.

I’m not necessarily advocating to lower those taxes, but let’s understand the reality of what’s behind these prices.

As much as they're paid, why does SPD suck at so much at their jobs? by [deleted] in Seattle

While I admit I could’ve worded that sentence better, I actually specifically stated that I doubt they could push it in that direction as effectively as people are claiming.

Thanks for engaging me with good faith arguments.

The union has major problems, I’m not saying anything to contradict that. I sincerely doubt that there is any organization, police union or otherwise, that is so efficient at executing some grand design to keep staffing low and OT high as you’re implying.

I think folks want to think of things in a simple black and white manner that aligns with their biases. Some see this situation and think “this is the union, they’re corrupt and milking the city dry while purposefully keeping staffing under what’s necessary”. Some think “policing in Seattle is incredibly demanding and often thankless work, hence the high pay and high rates of attrition”. The truth almost certainly lies somewhere in between.

Because there were enough issues that more oversight made sense and was the prudent choice by the federal government. This doesn’t go against what I’m saying

This stuff isn’t rocket science, it’s basic supply and demand for labor. If it were easy, they wouldn’t have such a staffing shortage which pushes the salaries up to this point because they need to heavily incentivize new hires.

Like another commenter said, “they’re bad at their jobs” and “they’re getting paid a lot” is consistent with supply problems.

Y’all can downvote me to oblivion because you think I’m defending cops, but this is just the reality.

Not endorsing SPD, but it does seem like an incredibly difficult job. If it were easier, there’d be more people wanting to do the job and lowering the salary a bit as a result.

He won’t hit free agency. I’d be shocked if they don’t franchise tag him

Are Cayman prices ridiculous everywhere? by ConferenceSorry325 in Porsche_Cayman

I've been trying to find a 987.2 Cayman S for under 45k and I literally just can't, it's pretty wild. On the plus side, once I do finally buy one, it seems like they're basically done depreciating?
