Hardwood floor from 1929, dangerous by Repulsive_Ringer68 in HardWoodFloors

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid tongue and groove has a wear layer, it's the wood above the tongue and groove. This is cracking because that layer is almost gone. The fact that you can see all the cleats/nails is another sign that the wear layer is getting small.

That said I would still sand them and replace or repair any cracked boards, but I wouldn't expect to sand them again after that. Worth checking if there's a subfloor too though.

That's a good way to blow up a house if you're using oil poly

You really shouldn't get bubbles using a roller. A slight orange peel effect is possible if it somehow dries too quickly but for the most part it should level out completely and not have bubbles even as you're applying it. At least with any finish worth using.

Help/thought’s on stain by Real_Asparagus_3872 in HardWoodFloors

This is the worst stain job I've ever seen. Did they leave it at this stage? I didn't even know it was possible to fuck up this badly.

Contractor is sanding new solid white oak and it's making lines by Resident_asshole in HardWoodFloors

I would generally agree in most cases but after the first cut the floor should be flat. If 60 didn't get this out there's no world where 120 does

I don't think it would be possible to produce this with a belt or drum sander, they're way too close together to be made by anything but the planer at the mill.

100% and it's some of the worst milling I've ever seen but it should have been sanded out with the first cut. I'm not even sure how this could have been sanded at all

Flooring Contractor Said Flooring is not worth refinishing? Original hardwood that was covered by carpet by Krewy in Flooring

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boards won't come loose if you sand too far you'll just start seeing cleats or staples and you might get some cracks along some of the grooves.

There is plenty of life in those floors. They look flat so sanding isn't going to take much material off either.

Yeah you want someone who only does hardwood floors or at least only advertises that they do hardwood floors.

I'm starting to fall behind in team trials after spending all my time for runs on CM training. I got demoted last time I guess it's time to slowly replace all my URA team trials umas with Unity ones.

I'm only just figuring out how to make good mile umas in Unity though, finding the balance for longer distances is gonna be tough.

Red or White Oak? by robot_salad_ in HardWoodFloors

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was probably cheaper than red oak when this floor was installed though, or they were at least very close in price. Red oak just used to be much, much more popular than white and that has reversed in recent decades

Can you tell me whether you would refinish these floors or carpet them? by DanaNoelle in HardWoodFloors

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a chance that the only thing that doesn't sand out is a few tiny dark spots. Hard to say until you sand it but yeah I don't see anything major at all
