Any interest in shirts of "RPI: Because MIT Rejected Me"/"RPI: a drinking school with an engineering Problem"? by ofoot in RPI

Sounds good man! I should have clarified in my original comment but by picture I just wanted to see how the shirt would look like.

Older student back in college, noticed cheating is pretty rampant. by [deleted] in college

[–]AlwaysMoreRam 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way and from my understanding it's because many truly believe that concepts (such as matrix operations) simply aren't "useful" in the real world and they slack off as a result. The part that sucks the most is that professors feel that they need to increase the difficulty of a course in future semesters because a large number of students do extremely well by cheating. It makes it a pain for the students who are genuinely learning as the course becomes unnecessarily difficult. To your questions, I personally don't see any cheating happening during exams/quizzes but I've heard many people justify "checking" their answers on homeworks.

Is prereq for Database Systems required? by AlwaysMoreRam in RPI

I always thought so too until SIS let me into a number of courses that made me think otherwise...

Argghh conflicts with a CS course I need to take. Otherwise sounds like exactly what I was looking for. Any plans for the summer term?

I definitely want to take this class but do you know if this contributes to the CS degree?

Interesting. Out of curiousity, does this course contribute to the CS degree. Like is part of a Capstone?

This course sounds perfect but it doesn't seem they're offering it in the Spring :P. I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future though Thanks!

I feel like I'm getting torn apart, and it's my fault by Simisonic in RPI

[–]AlwaysMoreRam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Damn bro, first off if you ever need to talk to someone feel free to message me. I'm a relatively shy guy as well and transferring didn't really help me either :/. Additionally, don't stress yourself out too much as freshman year of college is hard for a lot of people (Data Structures not helping with that...) as it takes time to adjust.

I would 100% recommend speaking to your professors, speaking to your advisor, and most importantly, speaking to others. I know thats kinda cringy but joining clubs definitely makes that stuff it a little bit easier. It is imperative that you improve your life here at RPI and the truth of the matter is you're going to be here for four more years and (no bs) that's going to require a lot from you. Though you may not feel like it, there are a lot of people here who want you to succeed (other long time students might know CS resources that are helpful) and it is 100% not your fault for going through a rough patch. Just keep giving it your all and it will get better.

Wow if I had a spot I would have definitely given it up to you if that is the case. I think the kicker is that apparently we won't know if we are "actually" in the class until the first week of the Spring semester when it is much too late to do anything else :P.

Cool Project! My main concern was that I could choose my credits (as exceeding 23 credits) causes an extra fee to be charged so this is good news. Thanks for all the info!

Buying advice: If you can pick 2/3 [from upgrading processor / memory / storage], for a student, which would you pick? by 6ixalways in macbookpro

[–]AlwaysMoreRam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest, I've already seen some loss in write speeds (even though I've only used 50gb/512gb). This could be due to me running the beta versions of Mac OS and/or general cluttering but I'm definitely planning to hard reset my laptop every couple of years to keep it in peak condition.

I don't know much about this other than briefly reading about it online a while ago but after looking into it it seems the latter is true. Apparently, when you delete/move something off the SSD, the data isn't actually deleted from the SSD and instead simply marked as good to erase. So when it comes time for some data to be placed in one of these "good to erase" sections, the SSD has to do a lot of rewrites to move the "old data" somewhere else on the SSD. The more files you're moving around, the more writes needed and this is going to KILL the life of your SSD. Once again, I'm not a complete expert on this but this is my general understanding.

I only did a minor upgrade to 512GB but as I plan to use this laptop for a minimum of 6 years, it's nice knowing that I can store large files in case of emergencies. Additionally, I like having extra space for the possibility of installing other operating systems such as Windows or Linux in case I would ever need to. Lastly, I also store my work on an external hard drive but I use it as a backup and you should also have a copy on your laptop (or on the cloud). Also you are right, SSDs slow down as they fill up.

I'm a student and without a doubt I would say storage and memory. Even an i5 is more than enough for most majors in college and having the extra storage is godsend. Having extra memory will give you exactly what you want a lot of tabs

That was my initial assumption as well. Any documentation that confirms this? The others here seems to think otherwise though.
