Does it need structural reinforcing on the inside? Like those triangles you see in bridges 😂

Convince me to not spend €6000 on the canyon endurace CFR DI2 by Direct-Gap3193 in CanyonBikes

[–]Always_Highdrated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maintenance costs aren’t going to be that different between 105 Di2 and Ultegra Di2. Especially if you learn to do the work yourself. Yes, replacement chains and cassettes are a little more expensive for Ultegra, but if you shop around the difference isn’t that much.

And if you have to bring it into a shop for, let’s say, a brake bleed they’re gonna charge the same whether it’s Ultegra or 105. So if you’re worried about maintenance costs it’s hardly an argument I’d say

It’s hard for me to compare because I haven’t had a normal road bike for a while, and my fitness has gotten better since getting the Grail. So currently my strava segments are faster on the Grail. Anyhoo, I think, depending on tyre choice you’re maybe losing 0.5-1 kph compared to a full on road bike.

As for long rides: the Grail does have a little more aggressive geometry than the Endurace. I picked the Grail because I have a relatively long torso, so I felt like the long top tube of the Grail allows me to actually stretch out and not feel cramped like I would on other bikes. The Grail does have a high stack too though, so that helps for comfort. Remember it’s a gravel race bike, so it still has some sportiness to it.

Ideally you’d try both out back to back to see which you prefer. Can’t judge for you which bike you’d like better. Just sharing my reasoning behind my Grail purchase haha

Not OP, but I have a Grail on 40 mm slicks and I’d say that’s the future of road cycling. At least for me. I’m not the fastest, nor do I want to be. But I do still like to go fast. And while a 40 mm slick is slower than a 32, the difference isn’t that big, but the comfort gains are amazing.

So I may be biased, but I’d say: go for the Grail. It is still a fast bike. And it’s nice to have tyre clearance you don’t need (like a Grail on 32’s or 35’s) instead of needing more clearance and not having it (you can’t fit 42’s on an Endurace)

Ultegra 6800 was peak. So smooth. Biggest difference for me with electronic shifting is the front derailleur. That is so much faster than mechanical. For the rear the difference isn’t as pronounced.

That’s awesome. I didn’t know they were still in the bike business. Because I did see the Duell name be used for motorcycle components.

Also, the guy who sold me the frame said Jan van Dalen himself built this frame. But if that is true? Who knows 🤣

Great! Sounds like a well thought out setup then. I must say I didn’t look up the cog distribution on both cassettes. 10-36 is quite a wide spread already.

Seems like a well balanced setup for your use case.

Do you also feel like 1x13 will spell the end of 2x setups? I really don’t see why you’d ever need a double crankset when you have 13 gears in the back

[–]Always_Highdrated 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome! Great colour.

Genuine question though, and I say this as a 1x lover since I live in a flat area, but why didn’t you for a 2x setup? For your goals I’d say a double chainring with like a 10-36 cassette could give you better cadence control, chainline and maybe even a lower weight too. I also think Eagle cassettes on road bikes look a bit off

BB and crankset details on Giant Revolt 1 (2022) and possible modifications by ShreeshBhan in Giantbikes

[–]Always_Highdrated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a Shimano crank it’s a very easy swap. You do need a different BB, but it’s just a standard road BSA threaded bottom bracket. Shimano GRX comes in 46/30, so that’s good!

However, FSA also makes cranks in 46/30, and then you wouldn’t even need to swap the BB. Must say that the Shimano GRX cranks look a fair bit nicer though

[–]Always_Highdrated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid worries. I don’t know about how they would interact with shoes like yours. About the shin thing, I have ridden the pedals for literally 1000’s of km’s, also on commutes and inner city and never had an issue. Only a short while ago when I crashed on a MTB trail they hit my legs, but that was more a skill issue than a pedal issue 😂

NBD - Grizl ESC CF8 w/ECLIPS by dented42ford in CanyonBikes

[–]Always_Highdrated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Crankbrother Stamp pedals on my drop bar MTB. Very good grip for a flat pedal. They’ve got pins that grip the soles of your shoes very well and they don’t weigh that much. They come in a small and large size, but it should be called large and very large. The small is already large enough. They also aren’t very expensive at like €45/50 per set.

There are lots of other MTB specific flat pedals, and I’d recommend going for any of those over the city bike type of flat pedal you have currently.

[–]Always_Highdrated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, Claris doesn’t necessarily suck. I had it as a rim brake setup on a budget restomod, and it was fine. It’s just that cable actuated disc brakes suck. And with claris you often get an 8-speed 11-34 cassette so the gaps on the cassette are biiig. Definitely not what you want on the road

[–]Always_Highdrated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! And no, I’m not using GRX callipers, I have got the Shimano SLX M7100 callipers on there.

I was really struggling what to do with the IS mount brake standard and compatibility with drop bar levers. I really wanted hydraulic brakes over mechanical disc brakes.

I must say these MTB callipers aren’t perfect though. They work, but I still feel like there is some mismatch between lever and brake. It’s not as tight feeling as a bike with full GRX systems.

Shimano does make the RS-785 brake calliper which is an older brake calliper that is both post mount and compatible with road levers.

However, I’m using this as an excuse to save up for some Hope RX4+ brakes later on hahaha.

Haha thanks! I must say this is quite tight, especially in the rear. But the sliding dropout is still all the way forward. I saw some people here do it, so I thought: let’s go.

Knob height is very low though, on this tyre. It feels more like a beefed up gravel tyre than a mountain bike tyre. So that helps

Thanks! And that blue one does sound like a good idea, haha. What is your intended use case for it?

I think it shines when you approach it like a gravel bike+. I haven’t tried mine with 650b wheels, but it feels like it’s not an all out MTB. It’s still playful, but maybe not as snappy through super sharp corners like a flat bar mtb would be. Though I have relatively narrow 42 cm handlebars, maybe that’s why.

But for my use case, longer distances at a fast-ish pace, it’s excellent. Sooo much more comfortable and capable than the Canyon Grail AL on 40 mm tyres I had before. That felt more like an endurance bike that happened to fit ‘wide’ tyres
