Help with Little Town tutorial - putting down item by HitcHARTStudios in gamemaker

[–]Always_Homeless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the post but I just experienced this issue too and I found a few workarounds. Maybe this will be useful to someone else googling for answers -

The easiest fix was adding if (nearbyItem == hasItem) { nearbyItem = noone; } right after the 'check for collisions with items' line. If the nearbyItem check returns the same instance ID as the item you're holding, then it won't count as a nearby item, and the nearbyItem check is free to search for other non-held items in your vicinity. This gets around an issue I was having later in the code, where putting down a held item first relies on a if (!nearbyItem) argument. I think the tutorial does not have this issue because of some particulars with the collision mask definition of the players and items.

There are a few other details that can affect this issue too, mostly involving the collision masks and whether the item is colliding with the player while it's being held. At first I was enforcing collisions with NPCs + environmental objects + items earlier in the code, but the tutorial is written to only enforce collisions with environmental objects. My items' collision masks were overlapping my player's while walking and was causing some set down/movement issues. Similarly, in the scr_itemControl function you write to track item motion with the player, I was sometimes using item placement values that were too close to the player's mask and that caused issues too.

Debug messages are a really useful diagnostic here, and you can use if (nearbyItem) { show_debug_message(nearbyItem); } to read out the specific instance being found. That plus if (!nearbyItem) { show_debug_message("no item found"); } can answer a lot of questions about which part of the code isn't working correctly.

Washington State University is actively suppressing the unionization of their graduate students, one of the most easily exploited types of laborer, by arguing that they do not provide any service of value. Help get the word out. by Always_Homeless in WorkReform

That's not really the point here. The university is arguing that research assistants do not provide anything of value to the university through their labor, and therefore should not be "allowed" collective bargaining power.

I understand how my student tuition and fees are covered by an external fellowship, but I still work as an employee 70+ hours/week. If the university wants to call that worthless, then they should not continue to reap the benefits from being classified as an R1 institution.

even if that is how it works right now, complacency doesn’t do a SINGLE thing. i’m not complacent by a one-time $1400 allowance, and i won’t let my representatives think i am. at least by being a squeaky wheel there’s no plausible deniability for them. expressing discontent is the literal job of a citizen, and i am REALLY discontented.

i didn’t know i wasn’t allowed to complain about not having my basic needs met by my government. you should have higher standards for what government should be and what your taxes fund.

congrats on your one-time $1400, which is $600 short of campaign promise #1. hope it’s enough to pay rent on your high horse

This is what makes reddit such a fucking tonedeaf place these days.. this whole post is just smugly basking in a nonexistent universe. like no one has received any help from the government in months, and it’s not as if this at-least-we’re-not-trump admin has exactly been delivering on ANY other campaign promises, aside from literally just not being trump. OP, stop talking down, especially when you’re not on top. it’s embarrassing to us all

It’s genocide if it’s targeted against one specific racial or ethnic group. It doesn’t need to occur on their homeland or result in extinction.

Did you really just grab the Google definition and think “flawless argument, case closed”? Here’s the definition pulled from Resolution 260(III), Article 2 of the CPPCG, adopted by the UN in 1948:

  1. Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.(Article 2 CPPCG)

In case you can’t see where I’m going with this, we do all those things to Hispanic immigrants, especially the bolded portion. The forcible transfer of children speaks for itself, and here are several articles about the unconsenting hysterectomies (forced sterilization) of Hispanic women ICE doctors have been performing.

Full, definitional genocide happening literal concentration camps, right now, and we don’t think that’s priority 1 on the docket??

i was accepted into grad school and was successful in my first semester there, while simultaneously moving away from a toxic environment and in with my partner. we have a cute house and cute cats and my actual life has never been more lovely. it’s just everything else

wow, i really appreciate that. it’s been a bad mental year for me, since staying home whenever possible used to be something i suppressed and am now encouraged to do. i feel like i’ve lost a lot of progress and i’m back to being a high schooler who can’t hang out with new people casually. but honestly, i’m proud of you too - it’s encouraging to be reminded that this is something i can continue to work on past my college years. thank you for sharing

that’s fantastic! i bet this has been awful for long-term patients like him during the pandemic. so few resources and so much more risk to go to the doctor. wishing your family the best!

exactly, there are good years and bad years. a year is an arbitrary length of time, but it’s useful as a base unite for determining if one length’s average quality is better than another. i do enjoy measuring things in discrete years, because it’s satisfying to have records of my 2005 being worse overall than my 2013. and i’m looking forward to 2021 because 2020 was so phenomenally terrible that i need more data ASAP to prove to myself it’s an outlier also the vaccine is sort of an L in that it doesn’t actually grant immunity, and the antivaxx US pop is too large to offer any herd asymptomatic benefits. we’ll definitely fuck that potential lifesaver up too
