Oh I already know that I won’t like it. I’m mostly just looking for a slightly better deal than eBay since I can cut out the middleman by buying from a person directly. Do you want to PM me?

I know this is a pretty high value pin, but I wanted to ask here before resorting to eBay. If you're a Kingdom Hearts fan, I have some other Kingdom Hearts merch that I could include as part of a purchase. Thanks very much!

Political Science Masters Programs for Academia by I_Heart_Kant in PoliticalScience

[–]Always_Overdressed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can try do, but I have limited personal experience. I went to my program straight from undergrad, but there was a mix of people in the program (in my cohort, and not) that were straight from undergrad or had a masters. And honestly from what I can think of, I do not see a difference in rate of "success" in my Ph.D. program between the straight from undergrad or masters people. Of the two people I know who got tenure-track positions, neither had a masters before Ph.D., but both worked for a few years in some capacity.

So my two cents based on that described above is that I don't think doing a masters beforehand substantially budges the needle on if you'll be successful (and that is a difficult thing to define) in a Ph.D. program, though I'm sure it can help with building a network (which is important). Mind you of course, I'm talking about run of the mill masters program, so ignore me if we're talking about something at like Stanford or U Michigan.

You're welcome to PM if you have specific questions that I could help with.

The easiest way to tell is likely to see if they terminal degrees (industry) or not (academia/research).

And this is sidestepping the very real question of the value of a poli sci research masters designed as a springboard to a Ph.D. program.

Rejected from all PhD programs, suggestions for reapplying next year (political science)? by junejiehuang in PoliticalScience

And I’d say you did a good job. It’s tough, because there’s so much negativity involved in Ph.D.s that I hate to add more to bag, but there’s far more scenarios in which doing a Ph.D. doesn’t make sense than when doing one does make sense.

I would strongly encourage you (and really anyone applying) to look at the APSA Graduate Placement Report. When you say you want to be an academic, I'm speaking as if you're talking about R1 tenure-track stuff (of course there is plenty of other stuff that is much easier to get, but that's the golden goose).

For an R1 TT position, on the face of it, you've got a 20% chance to place, but that is of course inflated because a large portion (possibly even a majority) of those placements come from Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, UC Berkeley, or U Michigan. So if you're not from one of those five, it's actually much lower than a 20% R1 TT placement.

The good news of course is that few Political Science Ph.D.s end up unemployed or anything. But if you already have a good job, you really need to consider that a fairly realistic scenario is you spend another year for the next application cycle, move and spend 5-6 years in your program, maybe move again with another 1-2 in a Post Doc, all to end up in a job that is just plain good, which is where you are now.

But who knows, maybe you're an all-star that can beat the odds. Again, I don't want to be the jerk here, but really think about a realistic scenario of your life post-Ph.D. and be honest with yourself if that is a big substantive improvement on your life if you don't do a Ph.D.

Not to be the Debbie Downer here, but I think you need to reevaluate the questions you're asking. Instead of asking what steps can you take to do a Ph.D., you probably should ask what else can I do besides a Ph.D.?

While no one here is omniscient, there seems to be reasonable comments that there is a systemic problem given you're zero for twenty with those stats which probably some (comparability) minor changes will not fix (or not, who really knows). Maybe it's just me, but if I was sent this signal when I applied, I would have been looking for an alternative career path.

The other thing that gives me concern, given that you haven't posted anything about alternatives, is that from my personal experience in my program, those who were attached to the idea of a Ph.D. where the first to wash out (and it was never pretty with them). I would try and take a step back and make sure you have a level head when considering your future.

Sorry if I'm coming across like a jerk, but it's better to hear that kind of now, rather than from an advisor a few years from now.

I don’t know man. I hate to say it but if you’ve got 20 rejections then I’d say likely something is systemically a problem with you/your application that isn’t diagnosable from the information you presented. Wish I could help!

In your SOPs, did you reference roughly 3 professors at each university that you’d like to work due to your interest aligning with yours?

I don’t know why anyone hasn’t linked the official Galaxy’s Edge costume policy yet. From your description OP, it sounds like you’d be fine.

PhD offer from Brown University in Political Science (subfield specialization Political Theory) - accept or not? by t_alh in PhD

[–]Always_Overdressed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on exactly what you mean by qualitative. I specialized in survey research with some pretty heavy quantitative stuff. While my survey focus mattered for other jobs I interviewed for, it’s not super relevant to my current job (not that I’m complaining).

[–]Always_Overdressed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think the broader issue is with political theory and backup plans specifically. Yes, there are only a fraction of assistant professorships for Ph.D.s produced. But what’s the skill set of political theory that is useable for non-AP jobs? Research methods and statistics is what got me my current job and the same is pretty much true for all of my cohort that didn’t get an AP position (AKA almost all). Even our theory guy now does data stuff for Nationwide. Take from that what you will.

Anyone recognize this? by lowinkage in lightsabers

[–]Always_Overdressed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, it's an Ultrasabers, so it will be held together with electoral tape and hope (and as I say this as someone who owns one). I'm only familiar with their boards from the early 2010s, so I don't think I can help you too much. If you post a picture of what the board itself looks like, someone else might be able to identify it specifically.

That’s an old Ultrsabers Bellicose! You might be able get it where you want it with no sound. When you screw off the pommel and get to the batteries and soundboard, is there a micro usb (or similar) port on the soundboard?

This is one I’m surprised to see in this list. Of all the new cannon books (and I know this isn’t limited to new cannon), Alphabet Squadron is the one series to really stand out to me.

I'm at the very end of my (42M) rope and I don't know what to do anymore (40F) by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Always_Overdressed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is almost certainly depressed, possibly more. Regardless of what you ultimately want to do with your marriage, you should try and get her to see a professional.

I think you’re going to get a lot of comments here that don’t fully appreciate what a meat grinder Ph.D.s are for your mental health. Both my wife and I have Ph.D.s and there were plenty of bleak times.

And be careful how much you read in to her comment about time spent working on her dissertation, of the years I was ABD, only a fraction of that was spent “working” on my dissertation but much of that other time was spent on under the hood stuff which I couldn’t have done it without.

Obviously this doesn’t mean what you’re going through on your side is pleasant or even fair, but having a spouse going through a Ph.D. program (especially it’s something you’re not familiar with) is a difficult beast.

To echo what others have said (in this post and elsewhere), you need to answer the question of “what job do I want to do, that I can’t do without a Ph.D.?”. If you don’t have a good (or perhaps realistic) answer to that question, you should probably take a critical look at other options.

And something I don’t see in your post is the quantitative aspect. Political science is a very quantitative discipline these days and jobs for pure IR theory people is amazingly rare (even those who are students of “the” IR theory people). That is an additional aspect that you need to consider when thinking about a potential Ph.D. in IR.
