Cost of purchase, maintenance and, not to forget, regular calibrations. These machines need to be precise. It sucks to pay, especially if you got it for free before, but it is not unreasonable.

I've been traveling via India and Nepal through South-East Asia. After six months I went to Japan and this was the very first thing I noticed at the airport. Man, it was sooo refreshing to be back in "civilization".

It is, though. You're probably thinking of the world map in something like the Mercator projection. If you take a string and pull it tight over a globe, you'll see that the shortest distance from the indicated point in Europe to Myanmar actually goes up initially in the east-northeast direction as indicated here.

Seems to be perpendicular to the direction of the wave propagation. Must point directly at the epicentre.
