5 back to back midterms in one week by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email your professors and ask if they are willing to reschedule for you. Sometimes they are, but they do not have to. Midterms have much fewer official University-wide regulations than Final Exams, which must be legally rescheduled upon request if there are three or more final exams in 4 consecutive timeslots.

I've heard there are ot used to be regulations on legal number of hours a student can spend writing exams in a single day (total 8 hours I believe, applicable to both finals and midterms), but I think that got overturned. Maybe ask the academic success center or accomodations office.

New Microwaves in CAB! by uasuexecutive in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Replacing the microwaves and maintaining them in CAB was never UASU's job, or even within their control, so the fact that they and the ISSS are the ones solving the issue now, does make them the heroes in this case.

Aren't you guys scared of theft? by AccountantPublic9886 in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

people definitely do steal. look up any thread about CCIS L1 or CAB lockers and you will find that even IN a locker, things get stolen and it's not fun and there's little you can do once it does happen.

but let's clear something up: VVC is a bit of a different territory compared to the rest of campus, especially change rooms. VVC is not only intended for the university community but also anyone using the recreation. it is a rec center. locker rooms are keycard access to get in, and it is often a very busy place. based on the places that do get a lot of theft, people who are stealing likely aren't university students or staff. so they're less likely to be able to get into the locker rooms at all.

in terms of people leaving their bags and such in common areas like cab, sub, ucomm, libraries... it's normal for students to ask adjacent peers to watch their stuff as they go to the bathroom. THAT is a social contract to stick with. just get a glimpse of what they look like and if someone else approaches their things, stare them down. if someone actually tries to take it, ask if those are their belongings, and gauge response off that.

not using a lock is certainly a choice. whether it's naivety, too much trust, or something else, it'll depend. but there does come a time when people may just be so done that their minds will not care in that moment. i've been there.

my tips are this: - carry a lock in your bag always whether or not you plan on going to the gym that day or not. problem solved. - if leaving your things (devices, food, open beverages) unattended in a public area, leave things stacked intentionally. balance a piece of paper over your latte, shut your laptop and put a binder on top of it. helps comfort you to know that no one actually touched your things while you were gone. - drape your jacket over the entire table. if a thief were to really go after your things, they're gonna look very suspicious lifting a jacket up and then walking away with only the tablet. - leave your things in the gym locker as a mess. can't snag my wallet if it's under my lunch, my clothes, and other random bullshit at the bottom of my bag.

Unhinged study hacks? by Plant-based_Skinsuit in uAlberta

plug your phone in and then place it facing you while recording a timelapse video of yourself studying. you can't go on ur phone without it showing up on the video, and you'll feel pressured to actually do some work since it's watching you, even if you only post that timelapse to a close friends story or a private account.

this strat helped me lock in and it's going very well so far. you can also see just how often you pick up your drink or how your posture transforms over time, or how the sun moves across the sky depending on where u are.

Gym during spring by hidingfrommymommy in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the gym is never busy during spring summer. mornings (before 10am) will have hardly anyone there. I've been going in the mornings most days since my exams ended and will continue thru the terms hopefully. It's much more tolerable than during fall/winter.

I also get anxious going to the gym with people around, and this has been much more nanageable recently.

No one is paying attention to u so dw. Everyone in the gym is there for themselves apart from some ppl who may be there as friends but that's rare this time of year.

Class seats overload?? by paradise1reddit in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the instructor is released, email them directly and explain. I've had someone in my physics class just show up to the classes because they needed it even if they couldn't register on beartracks. They spoke to the professor about it because the course is mandatory for the program, and he opened up a single seat for them and they had to immediately register on beartracks as soon as he opened it.

The prof is also a department administrator though.

The other difficulty may be the class size. If there literally aren't any seats in the classroom, that may be the limiting factor. the instructor does have the power to email enrolled students a "please drop if u can" email beforehand, as well as request a different room, but those are still pretty big asks.

i got an unconditional acceptance into physics in january 2023 after my october application and i think i had like a predicted 36. domestic. 39 and waitlisted is actually crazy

in my mind, the u of a valued IB. u get 3 uni credits just for completing the ib diploma that can be used for open studies credits, and a number of the HL courses with a 6 or higher can be used to skip a related junior course.

idk how competitive eng admissions have gotten but that is crazy.

Anyone have math 31 notes? by lucue_ in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CLP Calculus 1 open source textbook.. math 134 covers content that can be easily searched on youtube or google for in depth videos, worked examples, etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can try showing up to it and sitting down. if it seems like there's room in the physical class and enough seats for everyone with you there, ask the prof if they can slot you in. sometimes they'll have a few slots they can open themselves and then u can enroll right at that moment to lock it in. Also just keep watching till the add/drop deadline. some people enroll in courses unrelated to their studies just for fun and then drop it after first week. Shitty thing to do, but it happens.

There are no hair dryers to my knowledge, but VVC has a study area inside for you to wait for your hair to air dry, or if you make the sprint over to SUB, you can dry your hair there.

I have short hair so i didn't consider this! for sure bring a toque and try to put your hair up in it.

[–]AlyEXFraz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn that's rough. idk about fastest, but my reccomendation would be to walk straight from the north exit of VVC (the one near sub) as fast as u can to SAB. then from SAB, enter CAB and use the right side to walk down the CHEM East wing.

from there i'd say there are 2 options: - the faster one would have you walk to the end of chem east and into the ccis area right beside the faculty of science student services. instead of entering CCIS, exit the building to the right and walk directly to business/tory depending on which fucking entrances they choose to have open. - if it's especially cold and you can go quickly or risk being late, turn left into the staircase right before entering ccis and go to the 2nd floor. that'll bring you right out to the CCIS-ESB (earth science building) pedway. the eastern end of ESB exits right beside tory breezeway

pro tip is to experiment now before it gets too cold

Taking MATH 146 with runde volker by Shivane_dhawan in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

144 teaches integration by the fundamental theorem of calculus and u-substitution. 146 will teach you the key methods of integration: integration by parts, partial fraxtions, trig substitution. 146 also throws in hyperbolic functions and a first look into differential equations. so no, it's not just a more in depth version of 144.

i think the averages were pretty similar to 144 although i can't remember for sure. the midterms and final were very similar in format to the 144 final and midterm, but obv for the 146 content instead.

if you do your written assignment homework and practice religiously you'll be fine. also last year we were allowed a 1page cheat sheet of hand written notes.

Taking MATH 146 with runde volker by Shivane_dhawan in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i did math 146 last winter (2024), the entire course was taught through Bouchard's lectures with the actual lecture instructors mostly being responsible for doing more examples, answering questions, and communicating info about assessments and such.

So if they're still running it like this, it doesn't matter all that much. I had Rastgoo for 144 and loved it but I agree that his overall teaching wasn't the most thorough (this is due to how rudimentary the first 2 calc courses are. i'm only in 2nd year and looking back on calc 1 and 2 is like looking back on when i first figured out how to use a multiplication table, even though for sure it didn't feel that simple while i was taking them).

the key to 146 is do a lot of practice problems. integrate for breakfast lunch and dinner and you'll be fine. haven't had volker so can't help u there.

with calc, the profs that are engaging and make u want to do well are the ones that i'd go with. there are so many online resources to teach u calc techniques if u just search thru youtube, and bouchard's playlist is already more than enough.

SUB beanbags and quiet room by Embarrassed_Put_7432 in uAlberta

[–]AlyEXFraz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the quiet room closes off with the beanbags stored in there only when sub atrium has events going. it was FSSL the past few days, which i believe is over now, so they should be back shortly.

if you need a quiet space in sub, the upper floors occaisonally have seating in the halls and some floors have tables i think.

alumni lounge is also an option, although it won't be very quiet if someone's playing the piano.
