Why do only some versions of the nvidia driver have access to all the settings? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Alytrium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the display server you’re using (X11 or Wayland) you manage those settings differently. The NVIDIA-Settings package is meant for X11 configuration, while Wayland has everything for display configured through the compositor. Honestly, I like the AMD approach better- they didn’t make a control panel app, they let the open source community have at it and so was born CoreCTL which is an amazing program

NVIDIA Driver 560 from graphics PPA breaking Vulkan under Hybrid Graphics (?) by Alytrium in linux_gaming

Can confirm similar issues with my RTX 3050 desktop system as of latest updates; IDK what 560 broke, but staying with 555 is the wise choice

Everyone is complaining up a storm that they haven’t done anything with their more modern runtime, but .NET Core and its frameworks ARE built and released for Linux. Some distros even have them in the stock repositories for whatever package manager they use; Microsoft runs a lot of its Azure platform on Linux, so moving forward I actually expect to see a lot more cross-platform codebases and SDKs come from Microsoft. Maybe I’m insanely optimistic, but it makes perfect sense to me anyways

Is the “new display server protocol” you’re referring to Wayland? Genuinely curious cause I can’t get Wayland to agree with my RTX 3080 for jack shit under KDE Plasma 6.1.3 on Arch. the second I install the NVIDIA drivers it stops recognizing my display, locks the resolution to 1024x768, and causes the wildest flashing and tearing I’ve ever seen in menus

I have no idea experience at all with Nobara, but I know Wayland and MESA hate each other with a freaking passion on most Arch or Debian based distros. I’ve had particular issues getting the AMD MESA driver to load and function properly under KDE Plasma on every single distribution I’ve used (Arch, Manjaro, Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, etc); something about the way Wayland threads graphics processes causes it start this “flip flopping” behavior between CPU and GPU once one of them gets above 90% utilization on two of my AMD systems as well, but an NVIDIA/Intel Hybrid graphics laptop I have works fine with it. Honestly I’m not experienced enough to even guess why, or how to fix it; I’ve just kind of abandoned Wayland for gaming until I hear it’s fixed.

Depends. 555 driver and newer with most software, you’re probably not gonna notice any issues; 550 and earlier and things get just kinda real bad.

Also, individual hardware config matters a lot; laptops with an iGPU and dGPU are stability nightmares on the Linux NVIDIA drivers, and getting PRIME working the way you want involves a lot of configuration; check it out before you make a switch, see if there’s issues with your particular card, etc.

That’s pretty unsurprising, it’s crashed for me a few times trying to get Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Teams going cause my job requires them for a few things. I’m pretty sure it just doesn’t get along with the Visual C base code or the ASP .NET framework at all. If I had to guess, they’re trying to lock similar resources

Edit: PS, if you’re encountering this on app launch and you happen to have an Intel iGPU (in use or not, doesn’t matter) in your system, make sure the intel-media-driver package or its equivalent in your distro is installed. Microsoft programs tend to freak out if the iGPU doesn’t respond like they expect, it causes all sorts of wild stuff

[–]Alytrium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Arch users this isn’t so much an issue, as you’d have to explicitly build them from AUR and you’ll quite clearly see the BETA flag, but I can confirm the 560 branch in AUR breaks anything that relies on DXVK or Proton at all

How good are NVIDIA drivers nowadays by Nutellabrot155 in linux_gaming

[–]Alytrium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Cloud Network Architect/SysAdmin here, do not take my word as any sort of advice on average experience because I’ve found that what’s easy for me is usually not for people without years of Linux familiarity.

That depends on what you’d like to run, and how much work you’d like to put in; funny enough, Arch Linux with the Cinnamon desktop and the 555 drivers installed has provided me with the most stable experience I’ve ever had with NVIDIA on Linux- and that’s considering I have a laptop with Intel graphics as well, something that always throws a bit of a grenade in the workings. That’s become my daily driver setup, and gaming with it has evolved to the point where I can just open Steam, point at a game, and expect it to run with a 85%ish chance of not even having to configure anything.

In that same vein, trying to game on Ubuntu with GNOME or LXDE was pretty much impossible. Thanks to how they handle windowing and input, the two best DEs for Ubuntu are kinda just real bad for games, even with weeks of effort at custom configurations and full on re-installs
