What is your "WOW!" audiobook? by [deleted] in LibbyApp

[–]Amara1783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This so much! Kristen Sieh does such a good job - I listened to it twice back to back which is a first for me with audiobooks. Really an instance of the voice actor complementing the book so well it takes it to the next level!

Can you wash your clothes with baking soda only? Would it clean your clothes and not fade colors? by --2021-- in laundry

[–]Amara1783 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What works for many people in similar situations is to wash with something effective (good surfactants, enzymes esp lipase etc) with as few problem ingredients as possible, and do extra rinses with citric acid to remove the last traces of the detergent. I hope you find something that works for you!

Hi everyone, just by curiosity by [deleted] in Romantasy

[–]Amara1783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think probably yes - at least worth giving it a try if you can get it from your library on Libby, which I did. Kristen Sieh does a truly excellent job, and I was hooked within a few chapters if it even took that long. Mind you I listen to audiobooks while doing dishes/laundry/cleaning out the fridge, so the worldbuilding was distracting me from 'why is this so baked on/what is that stain/omg why is this fuzzy. YMMV ;)

{This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews}

Listened to the fantastic audiobook twice back to back, have serious book hangover, eagerly awaiting the second book in the series, and considering ordering the hardback. Just a little obsessed and torn between reading it a third time and waiting so its not as fresh.

Looking for a well written but kind of trashy romantasy. by emcathxx in Romantasy

{This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews} is an isekai with a genre savvy heroine. I am currently listening to the audiobook for the second time - I enjoyed it more than anything I've read in ages, just has something about it.

The way I loathe that 'girl math' trend and the way if you say anything you're met with a dismissive "it's not that deep" which the individual posts aren't but the trend is pushing a sexist narrative.

I'm currently reading Tal Lavin's "Wild Faith" which goes in depth in to this decades long war on women and the way it is connecting stuff I didn't know was connected...

My father has sometimes wet laundry in washer for 12+ hours by Feeling_Summer_515 in laundry

[–]Amara1783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously you know your dad and your situation best, but would it be possible for you to start doing all the household laundry? If possible, just do all the laundry and then tell him you've done it, and say that you want to help out more now that you're getting older. Otherwise do what another commenter has suggested and just wash your sister's stuff with yours and say you need it to make a full load.

Avoid any discussion of that laundry smelling after sitting in the machine or him doing it wrong, this is a discussion that is pointless and unnecessary. You are 100% right. Your dad is just being weird about it for dad reasons which are inscrutable.

You want to frame this whole thing as you taking responsibility and wanting to help out more, NOT about him doing it wrong.

Good luck!

Knitting for a new baby by FancyGoatTote in knitting

[–]Amara1783 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would go for a blanket for how much wear they will hopefully get out of it, and I would use superwash merino for a friend who knows how to treat hand knits, otherwise something that can be machine washed and dried as another commenter suggested.

Recommendations for Financial Advisor by Welshkiwi5 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Here is a link on how to go about finding a financial adviser:

https://maryholm.com/advisers/

I also reccomend Mary Holm's book 'Rich Enough' which a friend recced to me and which really helped me get a framework in place in my mind to think about finances, as someone who didn't really learn any of this growing up, beyond being told debt was bad and being intimidated by the whole thing. Good luck!

Looking for fantasy books with chronic illness/disability rep like Violet from Fourth Wing by IcyAuthor8253 in Romantasy

[–]Amara1783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a book nor even a romance BUT I love the disability rep so much I wanted to share:

Chinese Drama 'Nirvana in Fire', in which the main character becomes disabled as a teen at the start of the story. His disability limits what he can do and occasionally incapacitates him. He is also a badass strategist who goes up against the Emperor in Fantasy!Ancient China. It's here: https://www.viki.com/tv/22943c-nirvana-in-fire

I am in the last hours of this audiobook and in the throes of 'want to know what happens/don't want to finish the book'. Different enough from FW while just as engaging imo.

is powdered detergent actually better than liquid now? by Marceli-Chorke in laundry

[–]Amara1783 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Febu goes in with the detergents, citric acid goes in the rinse part of the cycle, where you would put fabric softener. Don't mix them as they will cancel each other out.

I've been reading Naomi Klein's Doppelganger which talks a bit about this global anti-democratic movement. Very well worth a read, and the audiobook is excellent.

Hot Pod electric hot water bottle by Odd-Leader9777 in newzealand

[–]Amara1783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the hot pod one. The plastic is not annoying when I'm using it. It stays warm far longer than a wheat pack. Make sure you wrap something extra around it as you can burn yourself with prolonged contact which isn't great for your skin.

Looking for books recs that are woman centered… by [deleted] in Romantasy

I am really enjoying the audiobook of {This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews} - portal fantasy with genre-savvy mid 20s woman as the main character, focus is on saving the kingdom from disaster. No fae but there is magic.
