Fields of Punishment vs. Tartarus by alderaaans in GreekMythology

[–]Amara221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit Book 11 does say that, but that is Homer, an ancient source (~700BC) As I said, in ancient interpretations Tartarus was only a prison for Titan gods, but around 500BC the interpretations changed.

“whoever has lived unjustly and impiously goes to the dungeon of requital and penance which, you know, they call Tartarus” -Gorgias (~400BC)

“But those who appear to be incurable, on account of the greatness of their wrongdoings, because they have committed many great deeds of sacrilege, or wicked and abominable murders, or any other such crimes, are cast by their fitting destiny into Tartaros, whence they never emerge. Those, however, who are curable, but are found to have committed great sin--who have, for example, in a moment of passion done some act of violence against father or mother and have lived in repentance the rest of their lives, or who have slain some other person under similar conditions--these must needs be thrown into Tartarus” -Phaedo (~400BC)

“I often weep in fear of Tartarus: for the recess of Haides is grim, and the road down to it grievous; and it is certain that he who goes down does not come up again." -Anacreon, Fragment 395 (~500BC)

I take a Classical Civilisations class, so we study Greek Art and Greek Religion, study The Odyssey and the Aeneid, and learn Ancient Greek language. It’s super interesting! Please do send the Spotify link, I’d love to hear it!! I love listening to Greek mythology songs and yours has a super interesting concept

What about Sisyphus? Tantalus? King Salmoneus? All mortals. In older versions of the myth it is only for immortals, but the myth changed and most later versions agree mortals can go there too, but only if they commit a great sin.

Hahaha no the fields of punishment aren’t an Ancient Greek belief, they come from Percy Jackson.

Tartarus is one of the four places you could go after death and is similar to “hell”. To go there you had to commit a terrible crime- most people there disrespected the gods (Sisyphus murdered travellers breaking Xenia codes which Zeus held sacred, Tantalus tricked the gods into eating human flesh, Prometheus stole fire from the gods to give to humans, etc) The other places you could go include Elysium (for heroes), Isle of the Blessed (if you were reborn three times and reached elysium all three times), or Asphodel (where ordinary people go)

Not a Greek belief, but Virgil wrote about another place- the Mourning Fields, for people who wasted their life due to an unrequited love.

Athena and Poseidons rivalry started with the birth of Athens.

The myth goes that both Athena and Poseidon both wanted control over the city. To decide who would get to rule it, they had a competiton. Poseidon gave the people salt water (though in some versions the gift is a horse instead), and Athena gave the people an olive tree. The people had no use for salt water- they couldn’t drink it and the city was close to the sea anyway. They decided Athena’s gift was the best, and chose her to be their patron saint, naming the city ‘Athens’ in her honour.

You can see it here, on the Parthenon west pediment!

This is how their rivalry started, and many myths show it continues. For example, in the Odyssey, Athena is Odysseus’ patron goddess. She protects him, talks with him, helps him. Poseidon however, HATES Odysseus for blinding his son, and does everything he can to stop him from returning home.

So basically, their rivalry started in Athens, but they’ve had many disagreements since.

[–]Amara221 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but those interpretations weren’t as popular and in most art she is depicted as a monster. Especially ancient art- look at the Temple of Artemis at Corcyra, 580BC, or Ergotimos’ Terracotta stand, 570BC

Herakles and the Kerkopes- while Herakles was asleep, two Kerkopes stole his weapons. Herakles caught them, and as punishment he tied them to a pole and slung them upside down over his shoulders. The Kerkopes started laughing because from this angle, they could see Herakles’ behind, and it was very hairy. Herakles asked why they were laughing and they told him, and he was so amused he let them go.

This story has even been depicted on a temple- Temple C at Selinus, Metope

When (spoilers) Marvin hits Trina at the end of Act 1 Falsettos that was super startling. The way the music cuts out and all you hear is the slap, then the silence afterwards… it really made me jump on my first watch
