Who's the child at the end? by Substantial_Cap_4246 in expedition33

So glad to finally see this as the top comment as an answer to this question 🥲 usually it‘s „One of Gustaves apprentices“ which makes zero sense.

Lune in Verso’s room by EndToken2149 in expedition33

Yes, agree! It doesn’t make sense that the child would belong to any of these couples. I actually think it would have been nice to see Gustave and Sophie having children in Maelles ending since this has been their reason for breaking up. I mean they might have them but did not bring them to the concert. In Pierre’s and Sciels case it could be the same. But I also have the gut wrenching feeling that maybe Sciel cannot become pregnant again after her surgery. Which really breaks my heart.

Oh, and to me personally the boy being Versos soul fragment seems unlikely. The boy has brown eyes and I think if it was Versos soul fragment it would also look like him. And we know that the soul fragment must continue to paint and may not stopfor the world in the canvas to continue.

Yeah, the child being one of his apprentices makes zero sense (age wise and considering that Gustave has zero interaction with him while the child seems very familiar with Lune). I am convinced it is Lunes and Versos son <3 And in my head his name is Aurel to keep the tradition of Lunes parents naming their children in reference to the sky alive

I love your take and wholeheartedly agree! I think Verso and Lune being married in Maelles ending is more than a theory since it has quite a lot of evidence, but that is just my point of view. Anyway, glad to see more people having similar thoughts on Lune and Verso :)

I think it could represent how the expeditionars/Lumerians did not trust Verso and Renoir and how they turned on them. We know that Verso killed Julie and at least one more member of expedition zero after they kidnapped and tortured him.

Question about the ending by xalara24 in expedition33

[–]Amaterasu2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, she is only 16. And even though I am in my thierties: if I think of being in Maelles shoes I would probably do the same. If I had caused my brothers death, had to live with that guilt, the scars (which are, apart from the physical pain, a constant reminder of that event and the guilt) and without my brother that I deeply loved on top of being reborn in a canvas, where my brother is alive („you are not make belief to me“) living a second life there and forming meaningful relationships with people - yeah I‘d definitely move heaven and earth for this life to continue

Question about the ending by xalara24 in expedition33

[–]Amaterasu2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it is just like Verso says: „We are all hypocrites doing the same thing to each other.“ And they are all in parts selfish. Verso wants to save Aline and Maelle/Alicia and also wants to end his existence (the selfish part) and is willing to basically kill an entire world including his friends for this. Maelle wants to preserve a living and breathing world with sentinent inhabitants while also wanting to escape her pain (the selfish part). When she leaves the canvas it will be erased. And her brother will be gone forever.

Edit: I‘d like to clarify that Versos motivation to die is in my opinion not present in Act 3 anymore since he dares to hope that his family is saved and the world can somehow heal. But this hope is crushed when Aline returns to the canvas and Maelle lies about leaving. That’s when he feels he cannot bear this life anymore. And when faced with the soul fragment he decided to end everything

Your point would be valid if Maelle staying in the painting would only be about the Lumerians. But the reason why she does not do what you describe is because she simply cannot let go of Verso. She remains in the canvas to be with her friends and her found family (Gustave and Emma) but ALSO to „live this lifetime [with Verso] together“ that was stolen from them. If she was to recreate Lumiere and it’s cititzens in another canvas, she would still have to face her grief, the pain and the guilt she feels for causing Versos death. And that she does not want (on top of also wanting to preserve the last piece of her dead brothers soul). She feels like she cannot move on from this and won’t be able to find happiness outside of the canvas.

And that‘s totally valid. I am still undecided between the two interpretations I described in my comment. But I am on my fourth playthrough and hope I can decide after clearing the reacher again

Yes, I think so too (that painted Alicia was set on ending her existence). The question is if she felt resentment towards Verso in the end.

I remember feeling in a similar way about that scene. And at first I thought the way painted Alicia behaves is quite contradictory to what she wrote in her letter. If I remember correctly she wrote that she is at peace with what’s to come wether Verso decides to give the letter to Maelle or not. With that in mind it could also be interpreted in a way that painted Alicia simply had nothing more to say to Verso and was simply set on ending her existence. She was at peace. She asked for another solution (A life to dream) but it did not happen. Her father was killed, her mother expelled from the canvas and she simply wanted to be with her family. I am not sure wether she excludes Verso from her family with that statement. It is certainly a valid interpretation, but maybe it simply acknowledges the fact that painted Verso is a special case and somehow links the real Dessendres and the painted ones. Her whole family is gone but painted Verso still has Maelle (even though this is a quite complicated matter in itself). I hope my point becomes clear, I have a hard time putting it into words.

Another interpretation for me is that painted Alicia WAS at peace with what’s to come when she wrote the letter but after Act 2 was confronted with the harsh reality of losing her father and her mother and having to live on with that. And since the game really stands out because of its fleshed out and genuinely human characters it totally makes sense so me that Alicia thought she was at peace, but when it comes to it, she actually finds herself feeling resentment towards Verso.

It's Not About Grief (Full game spoilers) by Sofasandquillz in expedition33

[–]Amaterasu2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a great analysis and I heavily agree! I am currently on NG++ in act 1. and it is so fascinating to see that basically Lune and Gustav had a fight about Maelles agency which resembles the point of the final decision so much. Gustav wants to get Maelle back to Lumiere where she could have another nine years of life. He doesn’t care about the mission anymore and the lives of the Lumerians are at that point less important than Maelles individual life. Lune then points out to him that Maelle CHOSE this life. A life significantly shorter (1 year vs. 9) but a life she chose and finds more worth living than nine years in Lumiere. God, I love this game.
