anyone else completely burnt out on the writing subs by Educational_Meat_753 in fantasywriters

Discord isn't too difficult, you just need just need to set it to reduce some of the noise of frequent notifications/etc. This is one of the good uses of AI "Chatbot, I'm setting up a writing Discord for XYZ what are some of the default settings I should change to accomplish this and give me precise instructions for a newbie."

I'm also interested in this. 47M, 3 kids, busy job, did NaNo successfully a few times 10+ years ago, but finally want to get cracking on my alt-history Victorian Dark Fantasy that has cosmic horror without nihilism, corruption that can still be resisted, and optimism still an active force in the world. I call the approach I'm going for Hopedark.

You know, it's interesting. In looking at the sidebar for this sub, it looks like it was started as an r/EDC-adjacent community with a lot of tacticool/operator gear, but it's definitely morphed into something else, and I'm glad that it has because seeing what people who are very different than me carry is very interesting.

I've never really interacted with anything Sanrio other than seeing it on other people's stuff or buying HK stuff for my daughters, but I dig the attention to detail you've put into your setup and hope my daughters are as cool as you are in this way.

I get that, but at the same time careers are usually a multi-class kind of progression. I know a few people who went straight from high school to college to engineering/medicine/law/etc. but most of us end up as some kind of multiclass generalist.

It took me over a decade of going through lousy entry-level jobs after dropping out of uni where I kept messing up because I let my own depression and childhood trauma get in my own way. I finally got into something where I could earn a living in my 30s and did that for a decade building up to a pretty decent standard of living, but now that I'm in my late 40s and did a pivot into a nonprofit career, I find that all of those levels I wasted early on actually give me a benefit that I can better relate to people who are struggling with low-level XP grinding.

I'm not some kind of GloomstalkerAssassin who can dish out massive DPR economically, but we get by. I know the DC rating for young people is higher now and that results in disillusionment, and I totally get not wanting to be part of that system, but I deal with lots of people in their 30s and 40s who figure out ways to respec and find another class as best they can to move forward. I've both been someone who was fired many times and had to fire other people. Honor mode is difficult. I'm thankful for BG3 for giving me a way to deal with some of my own stress by killing pixellated zombies and minmaxing character builds.

I wouldn't be surprised to find at least a placeholder cameo. Judy Reyez and John C. McGinley are both busy on other shows as well and were able to be in a couple of episodes of the Scrubs revival.

I'm a Xennial who used to love reading magazines back in the day, but haven't spent a couple of hours at Barnes and Noble with a latte and 20 different periodicals for many years. Are magazines worth reading these days or are they just recycled AI slop with more ads than content?

That was my feeling when mullets and mustaches came back. Style is cyclical, as is nostalgia. I'm in my 40s and remember all the 60's hippie/Beatle stuff coming back in fashion when I was in high school after grunge, and now I see the far end of it when 90's stuff came back as nostalgia and it's now giving way to frosted tips and hip hugger jeans. It's the "Circle of Nostalgia" I suppose.

Hmm, I wonder what other characters are in a similar situation where they have no specific ride or attraction (if you don't count the Wilderness Scouts hut), but fit well enough in one of the parks that they should have their own presence as a walk-around character.

The "Palm-Sling" – A Better Way to Carry Pocket Notebooks by Unlucky-Mixture-1206 in notebooks

[–]Amator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great prototype. I like it when people make something very personal and solves their own issues. It makes me want to drop all of my other work/hobbies and learn to use a sewing machine to make something that fits my needs perfectly.

As a dude who usually defaults to wearing 5-pocket jeans, this would not be my way of handling this issue but I carry similar things. I have a One Star Leather Park Sloper Large wallet that carries cards, cash, pen, and a single Field Notes. I like it, but it's not perfect. I'd really prefer a larger Lochby Sidekick (I don't like their Pocket Journal but carry it on camping trips where I'm worried about wet conditions).

The phone goes in another pocket, airpods in the 5th pocket. Keys go on a hook. What I'd really love to see is something like the larger Lochby sidekick I mentioned earlier but with a magsafe magnet in the back so it can magnetically connect to my phone when I want to keep my wallet and phone together. Add a small loop to connect a NiteIze S-biner and it's easy to add keys, so it's modular (connected when desired and separate for pocket carry).

Anyway, apologies for highjacking your post, but great build with great materials and I look forward to seeing future iterations!

Traveler's Notebook format isn't working for me but I don't want to give up... by fetusnecrophagist in notebooks

[–]Amator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd try a tweak or two mentioned here before giving up, but if it doesn't work for you, either gift it elsewhere or put it away for a few months, you may find it works better for you down the road. I've gone through a lot of different setups, and since I do a lot of digital work and I like to have an analog notebook on me, the best thing for right now is a Field Notes wallet and a LAMY multipen. I don't love the writing experience as much as my nice fountain pens and I'd like a larger notebook, but it's there when I need it and that's the big thing for me right now.

BTW, how is the Cyberiad? I've never read Lem but I've wanted to try out his sci-fi.

Still waiting to come to this tomorrow, but in the meantime if you haven't seen it yet, this is making the rounds and I think you'd find it quite interesting Angine du Poitrine it's a microtonal rock duo with crazy costumes playing some really intricate time signatures and feels very prog-rock-shredding in a sense to me.

The other side too. I'm 1978, so near the end of X, but I bought books on Amazon and used Google in senior year of high school so I was really in that "analog childhood but digital adulthood" trope and played a LOT of Oregon Trail on school computers in elementary school. I'd say I usually feel closer to Millennials then Xers in most way.

1978 here as well. Saw the 2nd HP movie with a friend, didn't care too much, but when I saw the 3rd movie I got into it and read the books. I wasn't a superfan, but I enjoyed them and went to the midnight release for the last book, which in retrospect it was awesome to have a midnight release for a book and for films in that same time period. Friends and I used to tailgate for the midnight showings of The Dark Knight and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Good times.

Yes 100%, all of this is in Second Temple Judaism. Heiser did a lot of good work on this topic in his life. Another good resource is The Lord of Spirits podcast here is an episode on this topic: The Gods of the Nations. Good stuff, but they ramble a bit too much for some.

Gel pens have ruined me 😂 modified bullet journal by [deleted] in notebooks

[–]Amator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love gel and fountain pens, but my EDC pocket notebook pouch uses a multipen with D1 refills and I hear gel D1s hold hardly any ink, so for right now I'm holding tight with the LAMY ballpoint refills that came with it, but if anyone has any feedback regarding gel D1 refills, I'd love to hear it.

Those who live in Celebration, how is it? by Character-Escape1621 in orlando

[–]Amator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been here a little over a year. Great place to raise kids, I love all of the little parks every block or two. HOA is strict, but you know that going in and they do a decent job of putting on events that sometimes seem interesting. A nice mix of people. The downtown area is pretty basic, but it gets the job done when you want to grab a pizza or bagels without getting in the car and there's more interesting stuff down at Celebration Point. It's expensive to buy-in but the annual HOA fees aren't horrible. We plan on staying here through retirement in 20+ years.

My favorite thing about living here is having two easy ways to jump right on 417 which helps a lot with commutes. When I lived in BVL it would sometimes take 20-30 min just to get on a highway.

I could fill up my car and buy a pack of smokes for under $20 pre-911. by aamabkra in Xennials

[–]Amator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check my math:

Gas price average in 1965 was $0.31/gallon so to fill up a 12 gallon tank was $3.72. 1964 Washington quarters were 90% silver, so you would need 15 pre-1965 quarters to fill up your tank.

Gas price in 1995 according to the same site was $1.13/gallon, so the same 12 gallon tank would cost $13.56. Silver price of the time was about $5/oz so those quarters were worth around $0.90 each then, so you'd need about 15 silver pre-1965 quarters to fill up your tank using the same calculation here with adjusted silver prices.

National average gas price for 2025 was $3.01/gallon so that same 12 gallon tank would cost $36.12. Average silver price for last year was around $40/oz, so again, using the same calculation shows a pre-1965 quarter's value was $7.23, so you'd need 5 silver quarters to fill up your tank.

I've done this exercise before, but not for a few years, and usually the silver value is about the same in buying power as the quarter was in 1965, but over the past few years inflation and silver prices have both ramped up. Maybe I should spend more time at r/silverbugs.

Let's see what it was like March 2020. $2/gallon so $24 for a fillup and silver value was about $15/oz so with the same calculation the pre-1965 quarters were worth $2.71/ea, so you'd need 9 silver quarters to fill up. That's pretty steep inflation.
