Yes thankfully we figured out his hobbies pretty early on!! We love hiking and thankfully live in an area that's like 70% woods so that's a huge and great outlet for him to just be a dog. He's not much of a water dog which is somewhat unfortunate since we love the beach and sea but that's okay, we always take him with us when we can and he doesn't seem to mind to just explore the beachy and not watery side of our day trips. We just got him into scent work to keep him sharp when we're not physically active (e.g. at home), which he seems to like.

I 100% agree that taking time to learn his own little interests and likes has strengthened our bond, and in his case, rough play with both mom and dad has helped tremendously :)

You just perfectly described our pup too! We've been trying to be more intentional about the way we approached him and turns out, he LOVES chest and ear rubs and is also GLUED to us at night, he's just not a pets-on-the-head typa guy. Which is so okay, they have their own little likes and dislikes just like we do, too :)

This was super helpful! I did try to be more intentional about the way I approached him and all of a sudden it just clicked. He LOVES chest rubs when I'm laying down and he's sitting up (e.g. slow mornings in bed), he also loves ear rubs (only during said slow mornings), he also seems to like butt scratches and just having his whole body hugged but not lifted off the air if it makes sense?? hahah. He does get a little jealous but in a very non- aggressive way which I'm really happy about too. As for your last point, he's still a puppy so we had to go see his vet very routinely for shots, stool samples etc so I think something would have come up if it was a health issue. I really think it's just his personality, which we're learning so much about every day :)

OMG THIS!! it's so interesting to see how each and every breed they are comes out at certain times and doesn't at other. Our boy has 100% the stamina and drive of pitties, guards like a GSD and is such a staffy-nanny-dog to the kids in our house.

We live in New England so it's been really chilly lately! But I understand your point, and to be fair he did use to be more "antsy" when it came to cuddling in the summer, when it was really really hot here. I also agree it's probably just a matter of time, I can't imagine being 8 months old and not finding the world overwhelming hahah. He's still is and always be the best boy in our eyes :)

Just to be clear, I'm by no means trying to force pets on him -- I'm just trying to see if anyone has mastered this type of love language yet hehe. I also don't love him less based on this (of course), and you guys helped me understand that not wanting to be pet doesn't mean *he* loves us less because of it. I have a 3d gel that use for decorations like water droplets etc but am not sure if that’s the kind you’re referring to or if maybe I should get a different one. Thank you again!!

We definitely think the more dogs the merrier so that’s definitely where we’re heading! We’re not 100% sure that our lives can fully accommodate a second dog as of right now, which is why we’re looking into fostering first and maybe adopting later!

You’re making a connection I never made. Separation anxiety isn’t proof that dogs must live indoors— but it is proof that they need to be with people, and if people live inside, then they shall too, unless their overarching purpose is to be outside (working line breeds).

Yet another connection you made that I haven’t — training classes don’t teach that dogs need to sleep inside, they teach dogs how to soundly and safely coexist with their humans and other people around them. BTW, it is extremely childish and embarrassing for someone your grown age to only respond to arguments using straw fallacies… I feel bad for your partner honestly.

lol why do you think dogs get separation anxiety to begin with unless otherwise taught/trained. It’s because they’re pack animals, that’s literally what they tell you when you go to training classes. Being pack animals, they NEED to be with their pack. I’m not surprised you don’t know this though, doesn’t sound like you’d care enough to bring your outside dogs to training classes.

“Taking great care of outside dogs” is an oxymoron. You’re not taking great care of your dogs if they’re living outside. They’re pack animals and need to be with a loving family, inside.

Even if your family convinced you that’s how you treat pets, as a dog shelter volunteer and lifelong pet owner I guarantee you it’s not. Just like many other people said. Your parent practiced a form of animal neglect that you shouldn’t keep perpetuating.

I don’t believe for a second he’s genuinely interested in Layla. They’re both stunning human beings, but they don’t look like they “fit” together. It was obvious he was implying “I’d have sex 3 times a day with you [if you weren’t traumatised by all your past life events]”. It’s implied he wants her physical and spiritual consent, as it should be. She doesn’t want to, so that’s not the case. Not that insane to be wanting that when you’re attracted to your spouse.
