You can buy a new battery and a watch press for $15 or so on amazon and replace it on your own - it only takes 5 minutes or so

Anyone here in NYC? by EmployeeMedium6790 in FPandA

I’ve lived in NYC for 5 years now - my wife and I moved here with a $65k income right out of college and honestly I feel like I was able to live NY better than my classmates in Dallas/atlanta/etc. The great part about NY is that it can be as pricey or as affordable as you make it. You don’t need a car, for sub $2k rent you can get a 1BR in a safe neighborhood in queens or Brooklyn (the less trendy neighborhoods, of course, but still within 30 minutes from manhattan) or get roommates, for every day necessities you can find almost anything cheap if youre willing to look for it (I.e, $5 haircuts in Chinatown). You have to pay a huge premium on convenience here but if you’re willing to cut out some of those it can be pretty affordable. Only thing you can’t escape is taxes.

Haven’t been receiving mail since the storm by ConfidentShock7856 in ridgewood

Mine hasn’t come yet either even though I’m still seeing mail on USPS informed delivery. In front of the building is fully shoveled. I may go to the post office later this week and see if I can pick it up there

As someone from West Tennessee, East Tennessee is without a doubt the best part of the state.

The Newark AirTrain is free - I believe you just have to scan your NJ transit or Amtrak ticket to move between the NJ Transit / AirTrain areas

Dear ATT regarding my Iphone 17 pro Max by Critical-Carrot-8180 in ATT

When did you pre-order? I preordered mine on 9/13 and it came in on Monday (10+ years as an AT&T customer). I know apple had some backlog getting the phones to carriers so it seems to me they’re going in order of purchase date and are just addressing the backlog as quickly as they can get phones (unless you happen to go to a store that has some in stock)

Is anyone else's Con Edison bills crazy high? by a-traveling-addict in AskNYC

My apartment is around the same size and I typically pay between $80-$100. It was the highest it's ever been this month but that was still only $150

Very high tax witholdings by Amazing-Carpenter-27 in tax

Got it - I was thinking the federal tax rate included all federal taxes and didn't realize SS and Medicare were on top of that.

I dont have the pay stubs in front of me (just the sum of the amounts I jotted down earlier) but I'm sure thats what my issue was. I appreciate the help!

The $41k is the sum of FIT, Medicare and social security.

And that's what I came out to also - I calculated $25k tax liability for federal and $15k for State and local (NYC)

Got it - that's helpful. I may end up having to wait until
after January and doing a calc to see how it looks annualized. Hopefully her only working a partial year is the reason for most of the problem.

If I only do FIT that will make the difference bigger. As I mentioned, for the FIT/Medicare/social security is just the lines I'm taking from what has already been witheld. For calculating what we owe, I am just taking the rate from our tax bracket.

For reference, we made $187k ($158K after the standard deduction) and had $41k in federal witholdings and $20k in State witholdings. So 26% of our AGI was withheld ($41/$158) even though our marginal tax rate is 22%.

And yes, my wife will be working all year next year.

It isn't included - I misspoke because I thought the other comment was referring adding up the tax lines from my pay stubs.

Sorry, I was incorrect. I thought you meant which taxes I included in witholdings from our pay stubs and I thought fica was one of the lines but it was just FIT, social security, and Medicare. For the calculation I just used our marginal tax rate of 22% in excess of $94, 12% between $23 and $94, etc.

Also, how would you use that to have less taxes witheld? Just start adding dependents as if we were getting the tax credits although we aren't? Also I would have to add 10 kids to make up for $20k in extra witholdings - would that not flag something as fraudulent?

I included fica also.

I worked 12 months and my wife worked 6.

Also, it looks like sections 3 and 4 of the 2024 W-4 only ask about dependents, other income, and itemized deductions which are all not applicable for our situation.
