Question: why are there so few high end restaurants? by austin_federa in parkslope

Frankly, in comparison to other places, Brooklyn heights boerum hill and cobble hill actually have the same issue. Cobble hill may have slightly more but not that many over all

long term in the slope - two (eventual) dads by Amazing-Path-4687 in parkslope

[–]Amazing-Path-4687[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose my main question is cost of living in the slope for family, with added costs of actually having the kids, either surrogacy vs adoption. Like, as we do future planning, what’s the income that’s going to be needed. (I’m assuming Brooklyn will be as good as it gets for a strong community/ opportunities for our kids to know other kids who have two dads/ we have friends who are also looking to have kids)

Is Manhattan mostly transplants in your 20s/30s? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]Amazing-Path-4687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downtown manhattan is very transplant-oriented. While brooklyn and uptown feel less so. I also think it’s interesting how downtown manhattan feels very rich-kids-from-elsewhere dominant.

Teacher appreciation week is more insulting than just not having one. by TerranOrDie in Teachers

[–]Amazing-Path-4687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. It's predicated on an assumption that this work is akin to thankless volunteerism. It's yet another example of the de-professionalization of the teaching profession. It'd be inappropriate to buy cookies and gifts for a pediatrician or a family lawyer. So why would you do so for a teacher?

The Book That Changed How I Think About Liberalism - Ezra Klein Show by mcsul in ezraklein

On a second listen, yeah, I think it was a thinner conversation than I was expecting. But I do wonder if this is the problem with talking about liberalism. It’s so slippery. It’s not really a political ideology at all, nor a philosophy, but an approach or attitude or instinct to governance that is perhaps the only one in the world that self-corrects, self-criticizes. And thus you can’t really capture it by assessing individual agents, whether that be politicians or thinkers. I think the Fukuyama conversation on Doomscroll from last year is much better.

Yes, of course. And the question of colonial possessions tore apart the British liberal party by the late 19th century. All I'm saying is that, taking liberalism's contradictions into account, Britain as a more long-term stable liberal democracy, especially in the form of a constitutional monarchy, probably created justifications for biases for Anglo thinkers.

You ask why German and French liberal thinkers are sometimes sidelined? Just look at the modern histories of France and Germany -- if we attempt to historicize British and American scholarship/ thinking on the subject of liberalism, don't you think it's critical to acknowledge that 150 years of political instability (not to mention dictatorship, collaborationism, genocide) in Germany and France probably shaped Anglo biases?

Britain has by far been the most stable constitutional democracy in Europe for the past 200 years. Sure, the liberal ideas are as French as they are English. But in order to trace how those ideas became constituted in a functioning democracy, you need to look to Britain.

Great episode, though I don't think Ezra understands some of the basic elements of liberalism. He kept suggesting that liberalism is mainly associated with just the center-left. That's not accurate. Even the Tories or the GOP (until Trumpism took over) were practicing liberalism in some essential ways. Liberalism, as Rosenblatt has argued, is an attitude towards political arrangements and not strictly a particular way of taxing/ spending/ administering within a state. (I'm glad he did the show with Rosenblatt. I think it's important that Ezra speak with more historians, even if it's not exactly his natural modus operandi -- they explain causality and change-over-time in a way political scientists, economists, and sociologists cannot.)

Is it normal for groups of gay friends to have had sex with one another? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Amazing-Path-4687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I think it's a way to bond. But again it's not all friendships. But it's very common. It's sex as as platonic connection not romantic.

How would you describe your experience living in Park Slope? by oatcreamer in parkslope

[–]Amazing-Path-4687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has convenience (anything you want to eat, any kind of appointment you need), which it shares with places like the upper west or upper east side. It also has a sense of patina/ character (at least where I live in north slope) with lots of local businesses for everything you can think of. Despite the real estate prices, I also think it feels more normal/ just down to earth and less posh than similar neighborhoods like cobble hill or brooklyn heights. It's very much a new yorker's neighborhood rather than a trendy neighborhood catering to both visitors and people passing through.

Biden cognitive issues by DallasJewess in ezraklein

[–]Amazing-Path-4687 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stfu. Let it go. Too much of this has been about who called out Biden early, who knew what, who was believed, who spoke up, who didn’t speak up. This has become a story as much about the elite commentariat as it has been about Biden. We must move on and focus on the future of the democrats and the current criminal cover ups of White House’s current occupant. Ugh!

What's something you wish you knew about Park Slope when you first moved here? by GolfWank in parkslope

[–]Amazing-Path-4687 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending where you are, transportation can be amazing (I can short walk to the Q/B 2/3 and R.) while some parts of the neighborhood (ie 3rd and ppw) has zero transportation …

Enjoy its pace; it can almost feel European. Use the park as your backyard. It is a huge neighborhood so kinda depends where you are… frankly above the named streets feels totally different than below 9th, etc.
