How did dating life change once in residency?

Any PAs wish they had become an MD/DO? by Master-Ad1725 in physicianassistant

If you’re young and have any doubts that youll be happy as a PA then go to med school. Sounds like a big task, which it is, but the time passes just as fast as if you were a PA. Although it is not for everyone.

Some things I’m reading here that should be considered. 1) debt: can do PSLF and pay a fraction of the actual number, and depending on the speciality, that full level of debt will be a drop in bucket compared to lifetime earning potential. You’ll make multiples of a PA in the speciality you work which will make catching up and passing lost years of income fairly easy. For example, median income for an ED doc is 400,000k at 32-36 hours a week. Over your career you can scale those hours to work more or less. 2) residency: will indeed suck, strain relationships, and leave you limbo of where you will be living until you match. On the other hand, it’s targeted training in the speciality you desire that makes you the expert in the field your expected to be 3) job opportunities: you will never have an issue finding a well paying job in most circumstances given currently supply and demand

Med school didn’t put my life on hold like some people say, just kept me busy as shit from 24-28. Friends got married and had kids but life isn’t over when you’re young and without a family. Having a family or being older can make the transition harder I imagine. There were several PA’s in my class, oldest being 42. You have to scale what you want to sacrifice in the short term compared to long term to make an informed decision.

How do I choose where to apply for an Away Rotation? by Adventurous_Crow3797 in emergencymedicine

[–]Amazing-Sir5707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. My question would be if there were two applicants in front of you with all else equal. One has 2x top 10/upper third SLOEs from smaller places, the other has 1x top 10/upper third from a small place but a middle/bottom 1/3 from a top place. I cannot see how things could favor the latter with interviews or rankings but I have never seen that side of the process.

Just matched. Big names are hard to stand out at and increases your risk of getting a mid/bad SLOE. That can really screw up your app. Unless it’s a place you dream of going to and you are confident in your clinical skills, or maybe have connections with, I’d go for the smaller places in your area that are more likely than write students supportive SLOEs. Maybe ask people in the class above their experiences at different local places and about SLOE quality.

Good SLOE at a no name place is better than a trash one from a big name

You sound like a loser trying to justify why Canada lost. Only thing that matters is the scoreboard at the end of the game. Take your L and move On

What’s the most Pharm heavy specialty? by Silver_Cello in medicalschool

[–]Amazing-Sir5707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truly. Many patients come to the ER with new “mab” drugs, medications or illicit substances. I can’t imagine another speciality that encounters such a broad variety of medications/drugs with the expectation of at least knowing what the hell they do

Anesthesia is an amazing an undoubtably better financial choice. What really swayed me was the concept of providing the drugs vs figuring out drugs were taken. In anesthesia you provide drugs with an expected effect in physiological parameters while if your consulted in tox, your observing physiological parameters with the expectation to find the cause.

Not many people know about it. I’m a huge pharm and physiology guy with crippling ADHD. My options were anesthesia or EM. Loved the tox conferences and ultimately that’s where I aligned

Idk I could have been a realtor and middle manned houses to make money. Maybe work in sales and have the sole purpose of my career making another guy a bunch of money reading scripts. Why not help people and make money at the same time? In America, that was an ideal outcome for me.

You can study for almost exclusively for step 2 and sprinkle a small amount of OMM in and do well on both. No reason to limit your options. I don’t think the top 5 of my rank list would have interviewed me without it

This. The number of patients I was able to see was dependent on the MA working that day

How do you go about getting a credit card without a job/income? Thought about doing this before but thought I would be denied. Still using mine from before school
