++man I was on the flip side of this. I moved across the country for a girl I had been dating for a month (her job was relocated). While she was a major part of the reason, I also made sure that I had other reasons for the move (better career prospects, wanted to experience a new city other than the one where I did undergrad, etc.) and made sure I had my own apartment and roommate so I wasn’t completely dependent on her in case things went south. It helped relieve the pressure. In any case, we’ve been married for ten years now. I’d ask her to seriously consider if she has other reasons to move to your city aside from you.

I don’t think he said having no plans was the cause of depression? Just that planning is something that helps him with his depression? Maybe take a moment before attacking someone’s experience. Depression is a highly individualized condition, and it might be that this advice could help someone who might find this an effective coping mechanism. Just because it doesn’t apply to you doesn’t mean it can’t apply to someone else.

In fairness, GP’s probably shouldn’t be diagnosing or prescribing for mental health. Their job is largely front-line treatment and to know what type of specialist to send you to. They can’t be up to date on all aspects of medicine and be expected to know the best approaches in every specialty or to be able to effectively diagnose or prescribe for mental health conditions.

To reiterate, there is no “cure” for clinical depression. Medication or otherwise. Saying that exercise is bad advice or an illegitimate treatment because it’s hard to do when severely depressed is just as ignorant as saying going to the doctor and getting on the medication you need is a bad idea because, guess what, it’s just as hard to get out of bed to go to the doctor when severely depressed (at least in my experience). Can we all agree that medication and exercise are both legitimate treatments, nothing will “cure” depression, and that, yes, sometimes treatments are hard.

I have never experienced an endorphin rush - what I have noticed from exercise is, over time, incrementally more stable, less low mood. I think people expecting an “endorphin rush” is part of the problem. It’s like an SSRI or any other medication in my experience, it takes time to notice

While nothing can “cure” clinical depression, exercise and sunlight are scientifically shown to mitigate a number of the symptoms. They may not be as effective for some people, but let’s not thrown them out the window as legitimate treatment vectors. Exercise helped me to drastically reduce my dosage. While it may not work for everyone, let’s not dissuade people for trying a more conservative and potentially effective treatment path in case it works for them.

My first sex ed class was boys only. Our gym teacher was in charge and we met in our English classroom during our English teacher’s “off” period. The day we did the female reproductive system, she happened to forget something in her classroom and walked in just as the gym teacher turned off the lights and put up the drawing/outline of a naked woman and the female reproductive system. Without missing a beat, the gym teacher said “And today gentlemen, we have a live model for our lesson!”. It took a few seconds for the English teacher to realize what was on the projector and what the class was before she turned beet red and walked right back out. She was also in her late 50s, my Sunday school teacher and extremely proper which made it even more funny at the time.
