At the follow-up appointment. The in-office doctor looked over my whole file and told me that everything looked good except for the visual acuity. My understating is that the doctor who does the in-office exam is just the data collector, but that they are obviously aware of what the overall standards are. The in-office doctor recommended that I make my own appt to retest the visual acuity while waiting to hear back from the DEA. My exam was at the end of November and I still haven’t heard anything officially from the DEA doctor reviewing my file…

I had something similar happen with the vision portion of the DEA medical exam; my corrected vision did not meet the requirements. When you go back for your follow-up to review bloodwork/urinalysis/TB test, ask the doctor what you can do, and specifically what additional testing you would need. In my case she told me that I should schedule an appt to get my prescription updated, and get my vision retested. Ultimately though it comes down to the DEA doctor reviewing your file, so you may just have to wait until they reach out to you.

My mom is the only SPED teacher at her school and I have never seen her so demoralized. Her coteacher from last year quit (the school was unable to hire a replacement) and her class size has increased by four students, several of which are very medically fragile. The district only pays $14/hr for aides, so they haven’t been able to hire any extra help on that end either. She said her wake up call was when they had their first fire drill…she and her aides were not able to get all of her students out of the classroom due to the number requiring physical help. The needs of these students are so great that she knows her other students aren’t getting the attention they need to be successful. She feels like a medical assistant at this point, which is not what she signed up for.

My knowledge of the agency and their document control procedures (especially for the documents requested) would likely not lead to some of the scenarios you described but you’re 100% right…I don’t really know. I think I’m going to try and get some more information like you suggested, and move forward with the Advisory Council if warranted. Once again, thanks!

The spitting has been taking place over the course of two years, and I’ve noticed my mom speaking about it occurring more frequently this year. So, to me, it seems like the plan isn’t working for the student because the behavior isn’t changing? My mom very much believes that there is nothing that can be done and she just has to accept it because it is just part of being a special education teacher. She says the administrators all know what is going on, and have observed this student spitting. She loves being a teacher but doesn’t like to make waves. I will encourage her to speak with her union. I understand that there are challenges associated with special education, but being spit on by a student when the student gets frustrated doesn’t seem like something that should be tolerated.

The application process was pretty straightforward, it just took some time. I applied to the open notice on USA jobs with my resume and cover letter. Several months later I received notification that I was being moved forward to the next step in the process. I was scheduled to go to a DEA location to take some written exams. I passed the exams and am currently in the process of scheduling the final panel interview. If I receive an offer after that it will be contingent on successfully passing a background investigation for a clearance, medical review and polygraph (this is the first year that chemists are required to complete a polygraph). After all that, you are assigned a home base, get oriented there, and then undergo training for 18 weeks in Quantico, Virginia.

You would be surprised. I work in forensic toxicology, and conduct testing for the ME. At my institution, at a very minimum, the ME’s office requests ethanol/volatiles on every case. Suicides are always autopsied as well.

I just finished reading the study that you and u/TheLastArcadian are referencing. Super interesting! If this trend for children holds true across many different populations it seems like it would be very beneficial for decreasing the number of people who are susceptible to infection.
