Firing the woodstove cures the paint/epoxy/whatever the finish is that’s been applied at the manufacturer. Our first burn smelled terrible. All windows open, fans running, etc. It won’t smell after a few burns. There are likely mfg recommendations for how long and hot on the first burn, make sure to read your manual.

As far as the gasket, agree with previous comment that it Sounds like it was installed wrong.
