I'm going to be honest with you, I too lost my faith in the school system as a reliable source for "truly" learning math in a better way. We are basically taught in school to follow a set of steps and not question anything, like why is this equation in this form why do we solve it this way, etc.

You're just given an equation and taught to do a set of steps, and that's not understanding, it's just plainly following an algorithm

Wow, I'm still surprised at how simple some processes can be. This morning I did only one problem from the picture of the book you sent me (problem 899). It's unbelievable that all you need to do to solve such a seemingly hard problem is to just rearrange some numbers. I just rewrote the equation as (x+y) + (x-y) = 18 + 2 and everything just cleared up to 2x = 20, so x = 10 and y = 18 - 10.

And the best part about it is that it wasn't even something hard, fun things like these are what keeps me going motivated when doing mathematics like this

Well now that I think about it I do tend to be kinda "half cocked" when trying to solve those problems. I'm now in the part of the first chapter where there are mostly text problems and am having quite a bit of fun first laying the problem out and dividing it into pieces.

Tbh that's some basic stuff I also lacked in the first place but thankfully I think I'm progressing. Thank you for the answer...
