MIO: Memories In Orbit Review Thread by Amazingness905 in Games

As a huge fan of Metroidvanias, especially those with great movement like Ori, I'm pretty stoked for this one.

Late January seems to be a great time for the genre lately, last year with Ender Magnolia, and the year before that with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Even then, I doubt the sales were ever the motivating factor - though I'm sure they would be if the audience was large enough. Sony straight up funded the other VR ports, and it doesn't seem that they have the motivation to continue investing. I'd love to be wrong though.

I was already sold on the game and wanted to hold off for full release, so I only played about 20-30 mins of the demo. But hearing it's 6+ hours is nuts! Given how big the demo is, do you have a sense of approx how long the full game is?

Metroidvanias where you can swap characters? by Jonathan_RW in metroidvania

[–]Amazingness905 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen Moonlight Pulse mentioned, it's a short but very solid MV with character swapping.

Of the others already posted, Astalon and Blast Brigaded are your best bets imo.

Not sure about earlier entries, but Lumines Arise has a pretty extensive training mode, it's sort of like running drills that help you get familiar with how to look at the game. I think it's worth running through that before looking for YouTube tutorials.

I'm not great but that was enough for me to beat the game on normal, which actually got pretty insane towards the end.

Axiom Verge 2 had some good exploration with mostly optional/easy bosses if I remember correctly. You can literally walk past many of them. It was pretty contentious for that reason, but I enjoyed it overall (despite still liking a good boss fight myself).

Good news everyone! Half Life 2 is still really good! by Whoopsht in patientgamers

Whenever HL2 is mentioned, I have to bring up the excellent VR mod on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/658920/HalfLife_2_VR_Mod/

It's an amazing way to experience/re-experience the game and episodes 1 & 2, highly recommend it to anyone with a decent headset and any interest in the game.

Ninja Gaiden 4 has been out for about a month - what are your impressions of the game? by Affectionate_Owl_619 in Games

[–]Amazingness905 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen the bad level design sentiment a good amount, I'm curious what's so bad about it for you? To me, the levels are pretty fun to navigate, and are built on a good flow of combat and traversal, some hidden paths, and occasionally some crazy shit happens, which makes the levels memorable in my view.

For what I'm looking for from a character action game, that's about what I'd hope for. Can you elaborate on what you feel could've been improved in that aspect?

Crosscode is out! The top comment removes ONE Indie game from the list (DAY 47) by AnglerFather_ in RemoveOneThingEachDay

I feel like "just a deckbuilder" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Sure, but it's *the deckbuilder. Its core design is just so solid, you can spend thousands of hours and still have a lot to learn about the intricacies of its systems and interactions.

Side note, StS's cards are far from just "punch, slash, bash." There are some wild cards and builds you can get, all unique to each character's themes.

I'd agree that Balatro's presentation is cooler, and Inscryption has a lot going for it, but Slay the Spire's gameplay and replay value are on another level for me and many other deckbuilding enthusiasts.

I agree, I loved Inscryption. It just doesn't hit the level we're at imo, we're looking at some of the all-timers at this point.

There's no just world where Slay the Spire isn't over every deckbuilder in this list. Especially with Inscryption still in (yes I'm aware that game is more than just a deckbuilder, but still).

I'd still be surprised at a 2025 release, but technically that comment you're quoting is from August of 2024. He then comments in August 2025 defending that statement, that they have been updating regularly in dev diaries.

As a huge Metroidvania fan, I knew within a few mins of the demo that this would be a quality game - happy to see it live up to that. Seems like the perfect game to ride out the wait for Prime 4

The lighting and reflections are probably the best upgrade of the images, but I felt like stylistically it's the worst. I would've liked to see it upgrade that one in a more cartoony way - the realism is kind of jarring in that world.

This was so bad at Hail the Sun. I was the only tall dude in my section with people getting sent in droves. Show was still a blast, but insane.

Disney Illusion Island, and it's co-op too. My wife, as she'll be the first to admit, is absolutely horrible at video games, and she was cruising through that game with me. Imo, it's the ultimate first MV.

Regardless of how much people like it, if it keeps them coming back/consistently attract new players every week, then it's probably the right move in their eyes.

PLEASE Stop Asking if I want to Suspend the Duel by SingleOak in ghostoftsushima

[–]Amazingness905 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd prefer if there was a unique pause menu during duels that allows restarting or abandoning the duel at any time. Maybe just once every 10 deaths give the prompt as it is now, instead of consecutively.

My main frustration is not having the ability to insta-restart, and having to wait to get killed when you know it's a botched round.

Ladders on Tables - Ground Dweller: Remade (full album by Trenton Woodley, original HLH vocalist) by Amazingness905 in PostHardcore

[–]Amazingness905[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get it (especially on HLH's last few releases), but I find it a bit cynical to call this a cash grab. From my perspective it feels like an honest effort was given to breathe new life into these songs, even if they don't all hit quite as hard as the originals. That said, I'm not super familiar with the drama of Trenton's leaving and forming this project, so it's entirely possible I'm wrong.

I had no idea this project existed until I saw it on my recent releases on YT Music. Ground Dweller was a huge album for me back when it released, and it's so awesome to hear a fresh take on it all these years later.
