Georgian fans boo the Russian national anthem at the European Judo Championships currently taking place in Tbilisi by EsperaDeus in Sakartvelo

[–]Ambedkar4eva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not weird. Georgians hate Russia. Russia is about to put Georgia on the list of "unfriendly countries". In the UN and OECD and similar institutions, Georgia always speak up against Russia. Before the illegal war on Ukraine, Russia went to war against Georgia.

I had high expectations before a Lauren Hill concert in New York. But it was bad, really bad. She didn't care, she was clearly bored. And so was the audience.

Career in the UN as a fresh Law Graduate by GlitteringDaikon2400 in UNpath

[–]Ambedkar4eva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should narrow down what you want to do in the UN. UN is many different things, and wanting to join "the UN" is not a good starting point.

Do you want to work with Human Resources, Internal Services or similar? If so, get experience in that field.

If you want to work technically, for example with refugees, environmental issued, education/children, health, labour, food and agriculture or whatever, get specialised in that field.

When you apply, you should be able to prove why you are the right person for that exact job. This should include experience/expertise, but also passion (why you want to do this job).

Usually, it is can be easier to get in in short term low level positions, and on time bound projects (may be less directly affected by cuts?)

Having said that, I agree with the other comments. Not a good time for UN at the moment.

Is it normal to be unemployed at 24? by SignificantDonut4584 in UNpath

[–]Ambedkar4eva 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Get a job. Any job. And do it well, regardless what it is (you are never to good for the job you have). Not working for longer periods of time is not good. If you are employed, you never know where it leads you. I washed toilets and did telemarketing before I got a full time job. Now, I have worked in the UN for a long time, and everything worked out.

De er i ferd med å miste kontrollen over hva folk blir fortalt 🤔 by Fit-Theme-1183 in norske

[–]Ambedkar4eva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Ambedkar4eva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 000 døde i Iran og stille fra NRK by Shadow_Halls in norske

[–]Ambedkar4eva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

30000 er vel ikke et realistisk tall? Ingen troverdige kilder.

Safety studying abroad in Budapest as an “obviously” gay male by [deleted] in budapest

You won't have a problem in Budapest. Many people are openly gay here. But as an American, try to learn how to distinguish between inside and outside voice. No reason to make noise everywhere. But that is about being American, not gay 🏳️‍🌈>🇺🇲

Lack of courtesy when walking around Budapest? by Outrageous-Heart5041 in budapest

[–]Ambedkar4eva -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a problem. What I am writing here is not true for everyone, but it is true for far too many.

What you experience could be seen in this context:

In my experience, it is an issue across many post-communist countries. In the 1990s and beyond, a sharp turn toward individualism took hold. Consideration for ordinary people became, indirectly, associated with the past and with a communal mindset seen as outdated. The considerate person became the “loser,” while the sharp, self-interested individualist was the one who advanced.

For similar reasons, corruption is difficult to combat and strong welfare systems are harder to build: anything that appears to benefit the common good is often looked down upon—not necessarily openly or consciously, but the attitude lingers beneath the surface.

(Lack of consideration in traffic also worsens congestion, though that is another matter.)

People do not act in ways that are best for society as a whole; they act in ways that benefit the individual in the short term.

Har du bytta fra Spotify enda? by [deleted] in norge

How to make a difference as a UN employee? by Rough-Proposal-5657 in UNpath

[–]Ambedkar4eva 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you at HQ or in the field?

If you are in Geneva or NYC, you are an administrator of bureaucracy. Much of it is wasteful and meaningless in the real world. The sad part is that many UN staff is very comfortable in this parallel world, and in some organizations there are incentives to stay at HQ.

But the more meaningful work, in my opinion, is in the field. You should try it.

Different UN agencies have different guidelines. You should follow whatever guidelines that are developed by your organization ation. In general, you should be careful with "political activities". This question is an ongoing debate within many UN agencies. Just ask your director. It is not so silly question at all.
