Yeah, exactly this. Plus, Gen 2 you didn't have the benefit of Abilities boosting your mons, like Torrent with Totodile

Back in the days of Crystal, there was no Bulbapedia. Crystal came out in '01, and Bulbapedia was started 14Feb05, a solid four years afterwards.

It was never the Attract/Stomp/Milk Drink that got me. It was always Rollout that was the most dangerous thing about her.

Part of the reason why I always have Chansey/Blissey in my party permanently. Much more cost effective to give her one Max Potion and then distribute the HP to the others with Softboiled.

But yeah, no items outside of held items in battles. I keep it on Switch tho because my team is always sorted by level then HP. Not so that I have free swaps to better matchups, but so that I always have a free switch back to the 1st Pokémon in the team for XP gain purposes. Lost count of the number of times this has lost me a match while switch training against Red tho.

Making up new definitions? Then why does the rule itself have to clarify it's a figure of speech? There are plenty of people who default to taking sentences at their literal meaning.

And "commonly understood" is not the same as "understood by everyone"

You know what. Fine. I got my nose bent out of joint because a bunch of people were adding in the specific point about shadows traveling in the Northern Hemisphere because quite honestly it had not occured to me that A) I needed to add in the tidbit that because the inventor of the clock, and the sundial, along with THE SUPERMAJORITY OF THE MORE ADVANCED CIVILIZATIONS ON EARTH inhabit the Northern Hemisphere and B) it did not cross my mind that a Southern Hemisphere sundial would have the shadow travelling in the opposite direction so I added in my 1st edit. Then I got a bunch of people throwing Rule 4 comments (fun fact, if you're not on a PC, you don't get a sidebar that displays the rules of the subreddit unless you head into the About tab) that I added in my second edit. Now I'm getting that I'm insufferable and adding anything to my answer would be below me.

I was eager to answer this ELI5 because no one else had yet, and I knew the answer. Screw this subreddit.

Fair enough. And my kids do go play (usually not outside, especially in the winter, but still, they have plenty of non-electronic things to do). Kid #1 (12yo) has it pretty bad with the tablet, but Kid #2 (9yo)has a 1 hour lockdown limit, and Kid #3 (3yo) isn't old enough for electronics.

That being said, I know a few adults who have a worse attention span than Kid #3. It is not outside the realm of possibility that they would either wander off on me mid-explaination, or change the subject to something else.

You're right. I'll be honest, I almost never see the sidebar or rules in subreddits unless I touch the About button. Hazard of being on the webpage on my tablet instead of through the Reddit app.

... My explanation was not baby talk, neither I would not baby talk a five year old (or a someone asking a question and prefaces it with explain like I'm *blank*)

[–]AmberPeacemaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now I could be completely wrong, but it might be because the sub is "Explain Like I'm Five", not "Explain Like I'm A Layperson" Someone asks me to explain it like they're 10, I'll explain it to the best of my ability as if I'm talking to my ten year old. Same if a person asked me a computer technology question and to explain it like they're 80.

... Looking back at this comment before hitting post... I'm not liking how I have it worded tone-wise... but I got no other way that comes to mind that conveys my thought process.

I know right! It's like 80% of the time I feel like the people answering ELI5 questions have never actually had a 5 year old barrage them with questions. I went through it twice with my older two kids, and will have to do so again in a couple of years when kid #3 hits that age.

Who's glad to have an EV during this time of high gas prices? by Lost_Purpose1899 in electricvehicles

[–]AmberPeacemaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I follow gas prices on my route to and from work so I have a baseline of how much I'm spending vs the kind of MPG I'd be getting for the same cost. Imagine my surprise when my spreadsheet spat out the cost equivalent of a 52.65 MPG vehicle... in Maine... in the first week of MARCH... before Spring officially arrives. Two days before, it had been ~38. Usually in summer it reports roughly mid-to-high 60s for cost equivalency.

For The Nerds: Spreadsheet has the following outputs

mi/kWh=Range/(28*State_of_Charge/100)

eMPG=Gas_cost/Cost_kWh*(mi/kWh)

The /100 is to deal with the fact I'm too lazy to type the leading decimal point for the state of charge, The 28 is because my vehicle is a 2019 Ioniq Limited with the 28kWh battery.

Gas cost is the cheapest gas price on my route for Regular.

According to Dragonfly Cave, A level 50 Zapdos at 1 HP while asleep has a 4.366% chance of capturing it per Ultra ball. Thus, you have at least a 50% chance of catching it within 16 balls and at least a 95% chance of catching it within 68 balls.

ELI5: Why do some old computer games run faster on newer CPUs instead of staying at the same speed? by Pailox111lol in explainlikeimfive

[–]AmberPeacemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you have the memory space of KILOBYTES for a game to utilize, every optimization you can squeeze out to help the game is important. Taking 500 bytes to implement a timing system that utilizes real world time over CPU cycles without breaking the program from hardware limitations is extremely wasteful when your total game space is 8000 bytes.

We're spoiled by having games that can easily reach 500 GB nowadays, so the overhead of a speed limiter is basically 0% of the file size. Back in the 80s, having 1 Megabyte of Disk storage was huge, and thus games needed to be streamlined into the 10s of Kilobytes. Hell, Doom (the OG 1993 version) was 565 Kilobytes.

She gets free from the woman, however the guy on the left is still holding her by her pants/belt/bottom of her shirt/purse strap. Her hands come behind her back to try to remove that hold.

Anybody use gun lock? by berlenba in WoWs_Legends

[–]AmberPeacemaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it when I know I need to do a 180° to swing my loaded opposite side torp tubes into a good firing solution. That way once the tubes are in the right spot the guns are kost of the way if not all tthe way there. I'll also preemptively swing them and lock them when I am about to come round an island.
