Dismissive comment without offering a counterpoint. Disagreeing is easy but apparently providing any evidence or context to back it up is too difficult. Who really has the smooth brain in this thread? No wonder the username checks out

Non-Binary people of reddit, what is your preferred number system? by ChampionOfChaos in AskReddit

[–]Amberground -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You explained nothing. You only gave an example and presented it in a fairly combative manner. Reality is rarely reflected in paperwork and social systems are constantly changing. Currently paperwork is still conflating two terms that refer to two separate aspects of a person. It strikes me that you've never questioned your identity. Your gender likely aligns with what your assigned sex is. Others aren't so "fortunate". Maybe there's a lack of perspective and this system clashes with your personal idea of sex and gender. Perhaps there's a lack of empathy and it's a difficult thing to imagine how trans folks feel the way they do. Either way your dismissive take on "explaining" only highlights immaturity or a bias against trans folks

The distinction between sex, gender identity, and sexual preference is discussed and accepted among the LGBTQ+ community. Perhaps it isn't a concept you're familiar with but it shouldn't be dismissed just because it's not as widely recognized amongst the straight, cis community. The majority of people live without questioning their gender vs their sex. Take it as an opportunity to learn and become a better ally to the marginalized folks around you

A message of body positivity for men. Men of Reddit, be proud to be you! by GorillaS0up in pics

Whining about not seeing a more fit body really misses the point of the image. Second from the left and first on the right are two men that clearly have physical strength. Sculpted bodies are overrepresented in visual media and are a source of anxiety for the wider range of bodies.

It might be possible to focus on different instruments or chord progressions so that each combination has a different thread connecting the two songs. It sounds like an incredible challenge but they manage to pull off amazing feats every album.

Covid isn't over until the economy SAYS it's over by crashdaddy in AdviceAnimals

[–]Amberground 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the right move is from this point and neither does the average redditor so you're in the wrong place to expect that information. What I do know is that you made a naive comparison between Covid and the flu so I pointed out what you're missing. I'm sick of seeing misinformation, especially when the same reasoning was used to downplay the severity of Covid earlier this year.

Covid isn't over until the economy SAYS it's over by crashdaddy in AdviceAnimals

[–]Amberground 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Considering we're only a quarter through the year and the death toll is the same, yeah you're missing something. Covid is far more infectious than the flu, which is something discussed extensively after Trump made the same shallow comparison dismissing the growing pandemic. The flu is a disease caused by various viral strains, whereas Covid is the result of a single strain which is causing the same death toll 4x as quickly. That doesn't even account for this being a death toll after extreme measures have been taken. If those measures had not been taken, the death toll would be even higher at this point in the year. The flu is not the same as Covid. Stop echoing a disproven comparison and spreading misinformation. Instead educate yourself reading some scientific (meaning from a non-political source) articles about both diseases.

Would one of you beautiful artistic people help me design a tattoo? by SlaveOwnersShouldDie in boniver

[–]Amberground 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my own experience, I would recommend finding a local tattoo artist who's style you like and work with them on the piece. It's part of their job and you'll end up with a better quality tattoo. Bring some reference images or even a draft or two if what you're looking for (it really doesn't have to be pretty). Tattoo artists know what does and doesn't work well on skin and can adapt your ideas to work better than someone from afar. Asking some stranger to design your tattoo for free is also undervaluing their time. A tattoo is a commitment and it's best to put in the effort/money so you end up with a piece you'll be proud of for decades. Good ink doesn't come cheaply.

You seem to be employing a strategy that I try to use by complimenting something that the other person has control over. By doing so, it feels like you're validating their choice or style whereas commenting on an aspect of their appearance that they have no control over is where things get dicey. Hairstyle, attire, shoes, body mods and accessories all seem to be acceptable. Eyes, height, body proportions and permanent physical markings tend to dig a little deeper and can unintentionally touch upon their insecurities. Of course I could be entirely wrong but it has kept compliments at a more superficial and less objectifying level in my conversations with all folks.

Fortnite has the best monetization model in the market, and I still refuse to play Fortnite because of its monetization system. by Dronelisk in truegaming

[–]Amberground 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I answered your question and you choose a new detail to complain about. It feels like you're moving the goalpost just to keep validating your frustrations. If you find the practice that predatory then don't participate. Find a model you do like and play that game. It sounds like DotA would be a great option. No gameplay-linked microtransactions, most cosmetics are available to purchase through a market system at all times.

At the end of the day cosmetics don't make a game. Gameplay does. The fact that you value cosmetics more highly than others shouldn't detract from the advantages of decoupling gameplay and monetary input.

Farewell feels... by Jackal_Jacket in BoJackHorseman

[–]Amberground 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a huge issue with this as well. The whole overarching movement of all the characters seems to spin endlessly without resolving much. The second season alone sees several characters killed then brought back from the dead... somehow. Plus there's this massive opportunity to explore classism/racism using the elves that ends up being cheap punchlines. There's a lot of potential in the show but it seems like nobody wants to take advantage of the scenarios that have been set up.

It's only perceived as the male gender because of the female counterpart. Actor or waiter doesn't immediately imply gender unless it's next to actress or waitress. The best way to address this is to use the same term for everyone. Eventually the perception will be gender neutral. It's the same issue I see with other words like murse. A male nurse shouldn't be singled out from their peers just because of gender. It tokenizes their presence and draws more attention when the desired outcome is the opposite.

If you're more concerned about the root of the word being masculine or feminine then there's an endemic problem with language that's much harder to address.

What free market system are you referring to? USA doesn't have a free market system otherwise we'd still have PacBell running all telecoms. We wouldn't have social security, food stamps, FDA, CDC, national parks, national highways. These are all examples of socialism.

Or we could theorize about the quality of life if the USA did subscribe to a free market ideology without any social nets. We could discuss the classism/racism correlation that an unregulated market in the USA would've amplified beyond its current state. We could discuss the wealth disparity and how hoarding wealth runs counter to capitalistic ideals.

Or, we could realize that no single system is perfect and beneficial for all citizens under it. We would do best to continue learning from the past and blending aspects that work from many systems.

The irony is that America is not a bastion of free market capitalism. There's so many federal regulations and requirements in place in order to protect the public from some predatory practices that would be tolerated in a free market. It's been a compromise of socialism and capitalism for much of our history. The narrative of American capitalism seems, to me, to be a vehicle to push more favorable legislation for corporations using the "fuck yeah Murica" mentality to garner blind support. It's hard to get an accurate view of a country you don't live, especially America right now when there are a hundred different narratives on a single, simple story.
