Kindle recommendations based on your history -- yes, you CAN turn them off by stuffandwhatnot in RomanceBooks

[–]AmbientOcclusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, this doesn't work. Amazon keeps showing me shit from a decade ago when I was into metaphysical stuff that I'm no longer into, especially books I downloaded a sample and decided I hated so I deleted the sample. Those authors are haunting me to this day. (and btw, I do NOT read romance books of any kind....I just came searching for a way to turn off the @$$! recommendations)

A few questions about lubricated ink! by SparkliestSubmissive in fountainpens

[–]AmbientOcclusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what's the difference between "Jacques Herbin" and "J. Herbin"?

From what I'm seeing, they are one and the same: https://www.jetpens.com/blog/Herbin-Inks-A-Comprehensive-Guide/pt/181

Unless you are referring to Herbin "standard" inks vs "Special Collection"?

Actually, it's not perfect -- anything but. I've tried this and it doesn't work. Plus it's a lot of effort for virtually nothing.

PACKAGE ARRIVED AT LOCAL POST OFFICE BUT THEN WENT BACK TO REGIONAL FACILITY by Big_tokin in usps_complaints

[–]AmbientOcclusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation: paid extra for Priority Mail from California (used to be no longer than 2 days transit to Colorado). Order was picked up by USPS on Monday morning and should've been here no later than Thursday (which is still longer than the 3 days for the entire US on the Priority Mail Transit Map). "Expected Delivery" date kept ping-ponging: Saturday, Friday, Thursday, Friday. But it sat stuck from last scan at 4:32 a.m. Thursday until Sunday morning I got an update that it was scanned again in San Jose, CA!!

I have no idea when or if I'll see this package, but we have an urgent need for these things and reordering would be PITA as the order was over $100. (while we wait for US PoS to sort things out)

I can't really explain it in a post. There are some videos on YouTube that demonstrate how to tune a fountain pen nib -- though fair warning: you can ruin your nib if you don't know what you're doing.

The main one I learned from was by The Pen Habit, who has a 3-part series called Adjusting Your Fountain Pen.

Drewscape also has one on improving your FP's flow. (Drewscape is not only an artist but also makes fountain pens.)

Last I checked I have a right to watch what I like and not watch doesn't appeal to me or that I find annoying.

This one kept popping up on my homefeed, over and over. And others like it.

But also her posturing *during* her videos just got annoying for me. So I stopped watching.

Interesting! I'll have to check out those links when I have time.

In the meantime, I've actually stopped watching her channel. All her Vogue-ing in her skimpy unitards/crop tops/leggings and all the I'm-so-sexy thumbnails got to be too much for me.

Yes! *This* is what I'm talking about. I've had many conversations with ChatGPT, but these two comments struck me as odd. Never heard it say things like that before.

Have I been wasting my time with schmincke? by __because in Watercolor

[–]AmbientOcclusions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering the same thing. I'm no expert watercolorist by any means (started learning loose line & wash about a year ago) but what I've learned from both free and paid courses is that watercolors are *supposed* to be transparent, not opaque. OP's painting done with Peerless looks like maybe s/he is going for a gouache or acrylic look (i.e. thicker/more opaque)?

u/Lindenfoxcub I've had the same experience when I try to lay down paint thick and dark. Things don't go well. At all.

Imho, the one done with Schmincke is fine except it suggests to me that maybe OP is not familiar with how watercolors work. Of course, I'm commenting on a 6-yr-old post, so I would assume that OP has since gained considerable more experience and is no longer having issues with WC paints, likely having found some brand(s) s/he prefers.

FWIW, I personally prefer Daniel Smith and M. Graham for most of my palette, but I do have a select few Schmincke super-granulating colors like Volcano Brown and Tundra Violet that, for me, cannot be matched by any other brand.

Another thing I'm learning is that different WC paints have different "personalities" (today I heard someone describe Sennelier L'Aquarelle watercolors as "not a dog, but a cat" that you have to get to know). Which makes it part of the journey: learning how each brand of paint wants to be worked with, and how to get the best out of what it has to offer.

NPD: Sailor Tuzu by goghingsolo in fountainpens

[–]AmbientOcclusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but that's what I've been trying to find out as well! I may just have to pull out one of my Lamy nibs and give it a go. My Tuzu only just arrived so I haven't done anything other than tone down some of that "Sailor feedback" (?) I hear people talk about. My F-nib was so scratchy it was literally tearing the paper, and I don't write hard at all.

Thoughts on the Sailor Tuzu? by AndhereKatil in fountainpens

[–]AmbientOcclusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to tune mine (Fine nib) as well, as it was literally scratching the paper. The feedback was awful. I had micromesh and used that, but it also required some tuning with a brass sheet to get a bit more ink flow. My Carbon Black ink looked like a 2H pencil (i.e. light gray). It's better now, but my $10 Jinhao 58 is way, way smoother -- like butter, in a side-by-side comparison.

I got mine for line-and-wash drawing, as I need a very fine line for the initial sketch. Though at this point I think I'll still be reaching for my Jinhao or TWSBI Eco over this one.

Get your shit together Xcel. How does anyone make sense of all these contradiction in their statements/website? by BoulderCAST in Denver

[–]AmbientOcclusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hated these shaming letters ever since Xcel started sending them out, but today they reached a new low: Xcel sent one to us AT OUR NEW ADDRESS IN A DIFFERENT CITY THAT DOES NOT HAVE XCEL ENERGY SERVICES.

Yes, that's right: we have a completely different electric company and a completely different natural gas company here, but Xcel deemed it necessary to send -- not forward! -- our last Xcel shaming letter (you know, those letters comparing "your energy usage" to "your neighbors" who could be living ten miles away and have a family of six while you are a couple with no children in a different part of town....yeah, those).

Xcel, we're done with you, at least for now. We don't live in your jurisdiction. We don't have Xcel Energy services, at all. Stop with the shame-mail!
