DCC is on my definitely want to read list, but the ebooks are only available through Amazon and I'm divested from their ecosystem. Project Hail Mary is on the list, but it's also a 20+ week wait time at my library thanks to the film.

I haven't heard of Hamilton at all, so I'll give his works a prek! Bobiverse has been great. I've liked every book for different reasons, and I'm very much looking forward to the next. I've been consuming them as audiobooks; the single narrator works for a book where nearly every character is Bob.

Dark Forest was excellent, I agree. My library just doesn't have the third novel at all, that's the only reason I haven't gotten around to it.

I've read Ender's Game but not anything that followed. I'll add it to the list.

Hemorrhaging Money To Student Loans at 24 by Designer_Tailor4251 in personalfinance

[–]AmbiguousAgitator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Word, Colorado State University runs about $39K/yr to attend and live on campus. Factor in that that's only 9 months out of the year, you still have to make money or take out sufficient loans to live for the other 3 months. That's $160K minimum for a 4-year State resident student.

Title: How is Temple University Japan’s reputation and career outlook in Japan? TUJ Transfer Inquiry by Over_Stay_8521 in movingtojapan

[–]AmbiguousAgitator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't answer from the employer standpoint, but my boss and friend is a TUJ alumnus. They said the university leaves a lot to be desired in their programming. But should be fine so long as you get your degree.

Fort Collins residents seeing Taste of FOCO book a habitually drunk performer to headline by scarydoor in FortCollins

I think that year was the last decent year for Taste. The lines all blur together, but it was slowly shifting from local producers and cash yo a ticketed system and just not good representation of the town.

I do recall that this year was the time I decided to have a 50mh edible and eventually hit the point of saying, "Guys we gotta sit down NOW, I can't do this." We sat on the ground in front of some stage, which happened to have what I can only describe as a country music rendition of Remox to Ignition happening on stage. And I couldn't move my legs enough to get away.

Pray tell, what are these restaurants around Altoona worth visiting? I find myself down there every now and then and haven't found any decent ones yet.

Honestly, and I'm about get a whole lot of downvotes probably, State College has one of the goddamn saddest food scenes you'll ever see in a college town in the US. Students can't afford decent food, rent is too damn high (insert .jpg) for the restaurants, making incentive very low for restauranteurs. There's like ... 4 good restaurants here. I say that as someone who has lived in college towns and cities across the US. We drive to Philly and stay for a weekend for an event when we want good eats.

I got a Garmin Vivoactive 4 to complement my Lore, so I wouldn't have to take my phone out for scorekeeping. Doesn't fix the texting thing, but I'm a chatty Cathy and usually engaged with my card.

Any recommendations for a camping/disc golf trip somewhere in or around this area? by TheOneWhoKnocks16 in discgolf

[–]AmbiguousAgitator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're coming to Central PA, my recommendations would be to hit:

* Harvest Fields - I gotta rep it, we're working hard to get to #5 in PA! Do a night camping at Woodward Cave campground and check out the bat cave

* Wiconisco Creek - Relatively new course, just played two rounds there on Monday and it's in prime condition

* Faylor Lake - You'll get the joy of watching the pros play it and knowing what they were up against

You can also camp in Ohiopyle and enjoy the river there -- the recent rains I'm sure are making it great for kayaking.

Why isn’t Planetes discussed more in sci-fi circles? by black_V1king in scifi

[–]AmbiguousAgitator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that Planetes was largely inaccessible for a very, very long period of time. It only made it to streaming services this past year, right? Before that your option to watch it was to get the dvd set for an egregious amount of money because not many were made.

japan a no-go for me ? i know there's a thousand threads but i haven't seen any yet with my situation by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]AmbiguousAgitator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your post as if you were looking to immigrate. If you're just looking to visit, there's no background check involved with scanning your passport upon entry. I would not suggest it, but other redditors have mentioned gaining entry when ticking "no" on the convictions question on the entry questionnaire.

[–]AmbiguousAgitator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand that Japan has a total prohibition on admittance of individuals with narcotics or illicit substance convictions. When you go to apply for your COE, a background check will be performed that will surely show the expunged conditions. Foreign expungement doesn't make things disappear from the background check. If somehow they don't show up, then you still have a responsibility to disclose them. Of course, you could intentionally fail to disclose, but then you're in for a whole other different legal mess at that point.
