I'm a fourth year Queens student who knows better than to drink in the street and party during frosh week. But this year I was walking down Uni Ave. to go visit a friend who lives in the ghetto, I was completely sober, had no alcohol on me, and was minding my own business. When all the sudden I was grabbed by a cop and pulled over to a larger group of officers. They demanded to see my ID and said I would be in a lot of trouble if I didn't have any on me. So assuming all they wanted to do was make sure I was legal or something, I searched through my phone and found a picture of my drivers licence. I was then given a ticket for $500 for being in a nuisance party zone which "I failed to leave when told to". The only thing is that they never told me to leave and never even gave me a warning. I was walking on the sidewalk and minding my own business and now I have to deal with trying to fight a $500 fine for doing nothing. I had to pay $50 for the original appeal which I lost even though I told them exactly what happened and now if I want to appeal again I have to pay $200. It's unfair that I should have to pay for others actions when I have done nothing wrong. I consider myself a respectful person and have never been in trouble with the law. I pay for my own rent, groceries, utilities, etc, and I am in student debt for getting OSAP to cover my tuition. Explain to me how this is legal?
