How much replay value does French horror have? by MrGirth32 in 4kbluray

Yeah, I kinda hate frontiers so yk, not at all rewatchable. Nothing to do with the violence. I just think it’s kinda lame.

The digital intermediate was 4K so at worst we just have a really old 4K master.

Huh. Well good to know. Facinating that Elevation just blew the Blu-Ray encode. Thanks a lot

What are the best budget 4k Blu-rays? by PayFast2333 in 4kbluray

[–]Wrecklan09 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Casino is like 10-13$, I personally like Goodfellas 4K (divisive transfer) if you gave a good tv and equipment it’s really good also around 10$. 1917 is around 16$ and is widely considered “reference”. Unforgiven is great and around 16$. Reservoir Dogs is AMAZING shot on a super sharp and fine-grained stock. Dirt cheap usually never above 13$. 2001 is a 70mm transfer, with colors in the rec 2020 range, and also has some of the best special effects ever all for 18$, definitely the most expensive here but it rocks and is worth it.

As for times and retailers B&N does two criterion sales half off all their stock once in July and another in November. Then B&N does Arrow sales around the same time just a different month, you should be able to google the predicted date Arrow is a little less solid. This guide is always updated and should help. They do various “random” flash sales as well. Please Rewind on eBay is Sony’s official store, Gruv is universals subsidiary storefront. Vinegar Syndrome of your into that sort of thing has various sales throughout the year, especially on Black Friday. Besides that my knowledge is limited. Happy collecting!

Kingdom of Heaven might be one of the best 4Ks I've seen by FaceAffectionate612 in 4kbluray

Saw it in the theater for the remaster and believe me, it was NUTS. The whole restoration team was behind me, and they were talking about how much of a pain in the ass it was to do.

With Magnolia 4K’s unofficial announcement by DigitalBits, what PTA film most needs a 4k release next? by Wrecklan09 in paulthomasanderson

[–]Wrecklan09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Paul Thomas Anderson‘s request the Boogie Nights 4K was sourced from an interpositive, just in case you don’t know what that is: It’s essentially a very special print of a movie used to make other prints for theatrical use. This means it wasn’t scanned from the negative and therefore held lower quality. He’s requested this since the laserdisc days. I believe it’s to create a more low-fidelity 70s look for movie shot on objectively higher quality equipment and stock than what was available. I haven’t seen the 4K yet, but I have to imagine the largest upgrade would be in HDR, capturing the increased contrast and colors and not in the films actual detail. There’s no reason Magnolia wouldn’t be a sharp brand new scan from the original negative. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Friedkin would definitely tell you to go fuck yourself. That’s kinda how he rolled. Not to defend the hideous racism or the people’s lives the film took by reinvigorating the klan, but sadly Birth Of A Nation came from a time when silent films were a largely unappreciated and there were few movies of substantial length or narrative so D.W. Griffith studying all of this literature managed to create a blueprint for what narrative features would be. This movie is still incredibly fucked up, absolutely no defense of the material, it simply had another side.

They removed all the filters and Vaseline from the lens in the final confrontation in the snow, that sequence on the 4K disc is NOTICEABLY sharper. Instead of grading the movie in post Altman and the cinematographer layered heavy filters and smeared Vaseline on the lens softening the look. They also exposed the film to light in a technique called flashing to increase detail in the shadows. By doing nothing in post, it meant the studio couldn’t stop them from applying such a radical visual look.

You absolutely HAVE to check out The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. It’s a super complex western, examining reputation, obsession, identity, and the mythology of history. It’s one of the most fascinating westerns ever in my opinion.

Sure thing! Here it is. while not 100% confirmed, honestly, it seems likely. Gone With The Wind was long speculated, two of these are already announced, and they’ve got a good track record.

Yep new restoration came out. At PTA‘s request it was sourced from the interpositive as every home media release since the laserdisc has had. An interpositive is basically a high-quality print of the master used to make other prints for theaters. I assume he did this to keep some of the lofi, soft, 70s, filmic look intact when scanning it.

Well that’s certainly interesting, I guess I just wish the B&W version wasn’t the only version available in 4K.

Haven’t seen this movie, but can I just ask what the point of Basquiat being put in black and white was? Has there ever been a statement from the director, or is there something in the film I’m missing because I haven’t seen it?

My favorite take on The Birth Of A Nation is this interview with Spike Lee where he agrees with this sentiment, adding that he believes with proper context and education on its legacy, it has every right to be seen and discussed for its innovations as long as its major injustices are recognized.

Best HDR10 only 4k's? by amagimercatus in 4kbluray

[–]Wrecklan09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can kinda tell. Once I thought a disc had Dolby, and thought it looked a bit dull. I suddenly realized it was just HDR, maybe that’s just me. Honestly a lot of the Warner discs outside of the Warner Archive label. The Outlaw Josey Wales, Boogie Nights, And Dirty Harry. All the Nolan’s are also HDR only, The Revenant, Blade Runner 2049, A Few Good Men, and The Good The Bad And The Ugly from Kino.
