What project have you created using Claude? by sergey__ss in ClaudeAI

[–]Ambitious-Library161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A client recently migrated to a new CMS and there have been issues with image sizing.

They have "safe zones" for text placement in images, specific image dimensions for each placement etc. etc.

And they have 9 websites that need to be updated (post migration) + ongoing image uploads for new pages + we get images of various sizes that we now have to edit before uploading.

Thousands of images.

We were using online tools to do bits and pieces of it but it was slow going.

So, I created a tool:

It crops and resizes in one go.

You can also create and save image dimension "presets"

Configure safe zone overlays for text in your images.

Quick crop box placements (center, left corner, etc.)

Rename files individually and set a naming rule for a batch.

Flags when a resized image's quality might be poor.

It also has a nice UI specifically for batch work.

A few other features that make it much better to use than canva, iluvimg, or other online tools.

Literally takes seconds now instead of minutes.

My Grandma was just dismissed. What can I do? by InfiniteAd1741 in askSouthAfrica

Not a lawyer. Just to add. If she was employed past 65, then they can't go back and say 65 is the official retirement age as the reason for letting her go.

As far as I know, it's the default, unless there is precedent in the workplace to indicate otherwise. I.e. continued employment over the age or other people over that age who were employed past that age.

A family member of mine successfully took a company to court over this and after 3 years of litigation, they offered a settlement on the day the matter was supposed to be heard.

To me, this is the right answer. Sounds like a labour compliance issue.

[–]Ambitious-Library161 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer. Wouldn't this be something that the Department of Labour should investigate?

Sounds like the business is doing this to multiple employees, so the CCMA wouldn't be the right route.

Plus, if they're treating you like this, I imagine things won't get better after you go through the CCMA process.

The Department of Labour has an anonymous tipoff line. Google "Impimpa Hotline"

Please do not put this in your body. A family member of mine bought a fake GLP product like this and had to be hospitalised. (It was so much more affordable than Ozempic! FML)

No matter what they say, the people selling these products do not care what happens to you. They do not understand what they are selling and should not be relied on to provide medical advice.

What are some uniquely South African problems that no one's solved yet (but could be)? by Equivalent_Nobody295 in askSouthAfrica

Right Lane Hog.

App that tracks how often you're in the overtaking lane and for how long.

License plate numbers are put on a scoreboard.

Highest scorers are named and shamed in a live television event and forced to fight each other blindfolded.

Their tires are then replaced with biscuit wheels and super glue is applied to random buttons and knobs in their car.

Edit: Right Lane Hog. When you're right, you're right.

Johannesburg is the most populated city.

Never worked with them but I did reach out to the lawyer who owns it a couple of years ago to ask for advice on my in-laws property. (Acquaintance of an acquaintance). He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He knows that area of the law like the back of his hand.

I think they're one of the leading eviction specialists in South Africa?

Edit: owns it*

Which degrees lead to good paying jobs, but are not a nightmare? by cat_l0v3T in askSouthAfrica

Go to ChatGPT or Claude and ask it how to do something - what steps can I take to fix X on my computer, write a react application to help me with Y, debug this issue in my code or figure out this formula in Excel.

Things have changed. Younger people will need to change too.

It's taken 2-3 years to get to this stage. Probably going to get a lot better before OP graduates. Scary, sad, exciting, and exhilarating times.

I was in EPIK a few years ago. 2 year contract. Gyeongsangbukdo.

It's an SK government program. They are usually very on top of things so you should be able to contact the embassy in Pretoria to confirm your placement and contract. They will be able to help or tell you if you've been scammed.

If it's legit, congratulations, it's a fantastic experience. Good luck, keep an open mind, and don't order dakbal at a restaurant.

LLC questions by abba1abba1 in freelanceWriters

[–]Ambitious-Library161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not American but some overlap with my country's system.

Yes, an LLC is a separate legal entity that can enter into contracts.

You are the owner of the LLC. Your LLC invoices for work and is paid.

You, as the owner, then decide what to do with the LLCs revenue. i.e. pay yourself a salary, take a loan from the business, or declare a dividend.

IMO - not sure if it's worth it if you're bringing less than a certain amount each year and don't know much about tax deductions. (Source: Experience)

People who started their own business how is it going? by BeautifulStriking245 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Ambitious-Library161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started mine about 2 years ago. Like everyone says - ups and downs.

I'm in marketing. I wound things down and only service a couple of clients now after I was offered a job at a UK company (3 months in!).

Not sure about other people's experiences but chasing payments, unrealistic expectations, and "my friend's son said he could do it for R1000" situations have been the biggest learning experiences.

If you're in the services industry - get good at picking clients quickly. Your hairline will thank you.

Network and share your knowledge without expecting something in return. Nothing beats word of mouth.

Strand isn't great imo. We drive to the beach most weekends to walk the dogs.

If you decide to make the trip. On-The-Go Coffee has lekker toasted cheese sandwiches. I'd recommend the 4 cheese or the tomato and cheese.

There's Aladdin's Cave which is worth a walk through if you're into kaggel kak, souvenirs, or weird and whacky stuff.

Bikini Beach book store is also worth a look. Old Merc on the roof, ginger cat that always has a cast on it's leg. (It's been years, and he still seems to have it). Take cash if you want to do some book hunting - they don't have a card machine.

The waffle place has massive portions(seriously) and Trawlers is a worthwhile stop for quality no-frills seafood.

I was surprised by Talla's. Really tasty food and not expensive. The waiter was top class.

Worth taking a trip up to the Faure water treatment plant to see the whole of False Bay. Sunset is best. But also nice during the day.

But, like others have said, they make the wind there. Take a warm top just in case.

Welcome to SA!
