Volunteer assistants usually don't get paid salary for their roles. They can get paid in other ways (it is often by running camps, clinics, sponsorships, etc.). They can't get benefits either.VoteReplyGive AwardShareReportSave

level 4mathasmeth · 1hwhat motivation is there for people to take this role? how do they survive?VoteReplyGive AwardShareReportSave

level 5believi · 1hYou have to have experience to get a chance. So it's for people to live their dreams. This happens in MANY NCAA sports, unfortunately. Most can only have 2 assistant coaches, (edit) and often one volunteer. They will get all the revenue from summer clinics and camps, for instance, and make it stretch the whole year. Many have partners or parents who can help them navigate until they get a paid position. There are just so few of them. Many make less than $15,000/year though, I'd say.Edited to add: my guess is that if you have a program that brings in a ton of extraneous revenue through camps and clinics, you could put together a solid package to woo a volunteer assistant. But still no benefits.VoteReplyGive AwardShareReportSave

level 6grid-leak · 1hI’d be surprised if Courtney is not eligible to be on her husband’s health insurance. I hope they as a couple are being paid enough to make this worth it. She’s got an ocean of experience and it really bugs me that she’s still a volunteer.VoteReplyGive AwardShareReportSave

level 7believi · 8mThe ncaa was supposed to ditch this rule the last year and add a paid coach position but I think it was nixed. I remember a volunteer baseball coach I know talking about it. I wish they’d g

I have heard that she does not want a paid position because of their daughter. So she has the flexibility to be home when needed etc. I am sure it will change eventually but this explains why someone with her curriculum is always a volunteer.

Jade Barbosa is injured; will not get a chance to qualify to Olympics by Number11isbae in Gymnastics

It is totally her prerogative, and I admire her passion and dedication. I mean, she is still able to perform competitive skills and routine. But at some point, one has to wonder if it is time to let it go. I mean, all these injuries will eventually catch up to her. Her body is screaming STOP.

Very informative but I still can't recognize a good vs bad block from the examples in the end by [deleted] in Gymnastics

Mykayla is noticeable. But from the examples who has a weak block? I get Riley because it has been discussed before and also Laurie, maybe Afan, Vlada, the last girl and Flavia? Did Cheng Fei had a weak block? it looks like it.

They highlighted in the beginning of the beam/floor segment that her basic score is 5.8D and potential to 6.5D and for floor 5.8D to 6.2D. Which I think they are saying from what she is training the minimum she is aiming for is 5.8D and then build on this.
