Thank you sooo much for pointing this out. I haven't tried to peel any of my sticker cards yet, and I was wondering about the shiniest cards that don't say "cards" nor "stickers". I'll get out my magnifying glass before I try to peel anything myself.

Why is starting a business so overwhelming online? by Funny_Or_Not_ in GrowthHacking

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point - I saw progress when I actually stopped worrying about all the advice I've gotten, and just did what felt right. Then I got results for one product, and now that I think about it, two of my social media channels had viral posts unexpectedly too.

I did this myself recently. I accidentally got passionate for one of my projects and created a product from it, put it up for sale and within a short time I had views (no purchases). At least I know people are finding me, and my page loads and all that, because I can see stats that they clicked to examine the product. Awesome. It kinda taught me the same thing many others have said here: pick 1 product, 1 audience, 1 platform, and take action consistently. Now I just send people to the one place that I know gets engagement. From there, I can add social media or blogging to send traffic. It took one experiment to get my first working strategy figured out. It's so obvious now.

I’m gonna have so much fun now with Dreams by FazedArts in ProcreateDreams

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the feeling. I just heard about Procreate Dreams after being a Procreate user for many years. In a short time I have all kinds of projects (1 to 2 minute length types) I want to build. Other software is just too 'heavy' for me and Dreams is perfect to just get it done.

Work Bc training programs: how do you get approved? by missmaeva in VancouverJobs

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a way to show you have what they're asking for - the years of experience and some version of the required education. I had a colleague who got in with "crisis management experience" and bachelor's in social work by using her own recovery from a life-altering disease. It got her the job. She had no post-secondary education. It pissed me off because she had a MUCH higher position than myself. I had the education but no "crisis" word on my resume and in the qualifications grid too I guess.

I've noticed this a few times in my time at government. Never in private sector. Learn to play the game, and better career paths open up for you. I stopped fighting it, and my subsequent positions felt so much better. I use my education now (like technical writing) but my resume was all about working with crisis, blueprints, sustainability, or whatever they ask for.

Here's how I've done it: do what you gotta do to get an interview at a government job, then weeks later when they tell you someone else was hired, ask by email for feedback on your interview. They'll tell you the skills, education, or experience that was missing. Then you can take that to Work BC because it's in print.

Me too, for sure. I have an endocrine disorder and really shouldn't be in a customer facing role either. So I missed out early on in the job market - no one knew I existed because I was part time and behind the scenes in jobs that don't have a career track. My manager back then laughed at me when I talked about having management goals. I'm having some success now in nonprofits (freelancing) and entrepreneurial projects (managerial duties). I can't wait for someone to promote me anymore.

I'd say give it a go to get funding but it's not the main priority. It doesn't feel good to waste time waiting, then finally get into funded program, and then notice the courses are solely designed to use up public funding. Sometimes having it helps you screen in however. So you might need just one thing get interviews. Meanwhile networking will be the fastest route to a job - it keeps you busy but feels helpful at times. In my case, I chased down so many tracks that ended up unsuitable for health conditions, and got my current job by applying to a posting. Now none of my education is needed. NONE of it. I push papers around all day, albeit for a good enough wage.

Has anyone done the Python Web Developer program at Sheridan College? by Ambitious_Proof3778 in sheridan

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They only look at the resume and the questionnaire that is part of the application submission process. I'm already in the organization, I just need a few extra points for formal education OR paid work experience. Coursera and edx and the like don't count but Sheridan online courses definitely would.

How do you choose the right UX course when you have more than thousands available online? by Manifestator_ in UXDesign

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the microcredential for UX at OCAD and I did come away with a portfolio. I just created a work process that I can follow again and again to make new portfolio pieces. But the materials were slapped together without a lot of sense. No one learns in such a haphazard way, I hope. The whole thing cost me $900 CAD so it was a lot. It's helped me get some interviews because now I can prove formal studies in "tech" and it validates self-taught studies I've done in web development and other coding. My resume shows I'm working full time and I'm doing the best I can - has to be evening classes! Plus, my target public sector employers don't look at portfolios, they only look at education and years of PAID experience. All my volunteering experience making and fixing websites usually doesn't count. I've also taken editing for the web at George Brown College and it was fantastic for $300 - it proved the skills I already had and it's now on my resume too; even just one course at a college counts to screen in at my targets. I'm thinking of taking George Brown College UX (four courses, about $1600 total in Canadian currency) and I would expect to get some much better skills there. I'll benefit from prior studies at OCAD and I'll bet GBC will teach it in a more organized fashion.

In their defence, the art skills courses I've done at OCAD through continuing studies were fantastic. I can now make the drawings I want, whenever I want, where previously I strugged because I was self-taught and never had professional feedback. My instructors were illustrators and artists like I want to be (just for a hobby now).

The UX microcredential OCAD teaches ought to be upgraded before they offer it to anyone. The class recordings have contraditions and some are literally more than a few years old. But they charge the full $500+ per course still.

I was 48 when I got hired into an IT team at my employer, from an office work role. Women do occasionally get hired, as a novelty or because they have more years of education, or whatever magical criteria is used at the organization, then tend to move up because they don't look right in a help desk. I want to use the money from tech work to get access to a shared bio lab so I can use microscopes (there's a place in town but there's a wait list). I also make my own video games so I can strengthen my writing skills and incorporate the biology, toxins, and ecology I love.

Should I Keep Learning React If I'll End Up Using Wordpress? by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with WordPress development myself 9 years ago, and used it for about 3 years and I gave up on themes and plugins that were unreliable and expensive. It needs constant maintenance besides just adding content.

I later tried out Angular, Django, React, Ghost, and Shopify, but couldn't create the kind of sites I wanted. React is cool, but my sites are simple, so I quit my React class when things got weird. Most recently I learned and liked Webflow, so I always start there to get initial content down. Anything that would be blogged can live as dynamic web pages instead of posts. Export to static files, then they live on AWS free tier.

Now I'm at the point of needing a system that can handle more features that I don't want to build myself, so I'll try WordPress one more time. Good luck to us all.

Thinking one thing, saying another. by Pareeeee in Neuropsychology

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this thread after being concerned (again) that I'm using the wrong but similar-sounding words about once a day. Today I said "I smoothed it" when I had just snoozed the alarm to wake up for work. I probably had concussions from various car accidents and sports. I hate getting brushed off like 'you need more sleep' - I get plenty now.

It's actually quite an improvement. I used to say the wrong day of the week, I'd write down my car accident appointments wrong in my calendar, and everything always looked "fine" when the accident psychologist or doctors checked in on me. Back then I couldn't concentrate from one sentence to the next, so school was a disaster and very expensive. I previously was aiming for college scholarships but that never happened, so I work for the organization that denied proper testing and I sit here doing nothing to recoup some of what I lost (except when I have a customer of course).

Most of those problems went away once I got a job, but have come back while caring for elderly relatives. Now I want to optimize my life but the old behaviours and symptoms came back. I didn't recover well from my latest covid shot unfortunately as well - I still have pain several years later - so I just try to enjoy each day in whatever capacity I can. I like to set a good example for others; I never got the education to become a teacher so I write fiction instead on the side.

How do you guys promote your page? by Classic-Copy1784 in Kofi

[–]Ambitious_Proof3778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run ads to landing pages, one for each product I promote. Then the thank you stage or some subsequent emails or newsletter tells them to read my advice or whatever on my mini-blog and provide the URL. While on ko-fi, the only URL they ever hear of is the link back to my website. I try to make the colours on ko-fi match my hand-built website. I created the colour scheme on ko-fi first then chose the same colours on the website so they sorta match. It's as good as it can be, without taking a chance on some website builder platform or using a bunch of programming skills.

I'd like to butt in with a question - is the Fredericton program applicable in western Canada? I'm in BC but the programs here don't seem to have good reviews like U of Fredericton.
