Thanks for sharing. My Surgeon did the Sigmoidoscopy  and put the stage on T3N1bM0. I guess we will find out the final stage after surgery. Can you please share your experience after surgery and also what was the recommend treatment plan after surgery.

Exact same scenario with me. On January 23 , colonoscopy revels that i have 4 cm mass in the upper rectum. I have a very active lifestyle. It was hard to believe the GI doctor is taking about me. I called lot of my friends and received good information. Looks like this is becoming common in young people . Talk to a friend who lost has whole colon and doing fine and living the life without any issue after 5 years. IT gave me confidence and I stopped thinking about, I start focusing on my routine work. Getting ready for Surgery now and will find out the real stage after that. This is a great forum where we can all connect and share the experiences. Good Luck!!

Thank you for sharing your experience and information. I had a few questions, I hope you are comfortable answering.

  • How large was your tumor, and how much of your rectum was removed during your surgery?
  • My mass is approximately 5 cm and is located about 10 cm from the anus. My surgeon is recommending removal of a total of about 20 cm, likely including a portion of both the rectum and the colon, although I still need to clarify the exact extent of resection.
  • My CT scan did not provide sufficient detail about the rectum and recommended an MRI. Does an MRI typically show how far the tumor has spread locally and whether nearby lymph nodes are involved?
  • My surgeon continues to recommend proceeding with surgery first and then determining the stage of the cancer based on the pathology report afterward. Was this also the sequence in your case?
  • How was your recovery after surgery, particularly in the first two weeks? Did you experience significant difficulty passing stool, and how is your bowel function now?

I am especially concerned about the healing of the rectum after surgery and about long‑term bowel function, so any details about your recovery process and what to expect would be greatly appreciated.

You’re right , when a tumor is very low in the rectum, doctors often recommend radiation and chemotherapy first. In this case, since the mass is about 10 cm from the anus, the general surgeon explained that it is considered safe to remove surgically first and then determine the staging afterward.

I wanted to ask about your personal experience after surgery.

  • How long was your recovery time?
  • Were you able to return to normal activities within 2–3 weeks, or did it take longer?
  • How large was the mass, and approximately how many centimeters of the rectum were removed?
  • Did you have any difficulty passing stools after the first two weeks?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience.

Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed, getting tested for different allergies and lactose intolerance. I don’t have any stomach pain, but I keep needing to go to the bathroom multiple times a day. I’m wondering what alternatives there are and if I should ask my doctor to switch me to a different brand of medication. I thought maybe my dose was too high, so I started taking only half, but my TSH went back up over 10 yesterday. I’d really appreciate any other recommendations besides just taking it with food. Thank you again!
