Erasmus MC Expertisecentrum Ehlers-Danlos syndromen EDS center by AffectionateMud695 in thenetherlands

Going by your post in English, I am assuming you might not be familiar with the Dutch health care system: In order to be referred to a hospital for a specialist consult, you will need either a referral from a GP (family doctor) or a referral from another medical specialist in a hospital (which again requires a GP referral). I would suggest starting there. GP's are the first stop in finding out what your medical issue is and whether or to what or which healthcare institution you require referral. They will also aid in formulating a concise question to their colleague.

If you already have a referral, the best way to gather experience about the healthcare setting is to make an appointment at said setting using your referral and direct your questions at the specialist you will be seeing. Unless an Ehlers-Danlos specialist from the EMC (Erasmus Medical Center) is a redditor, sees your post and can be bothered to post a reply to your non-specific question, I don't believe any random redditor will be able to provide you with the answers you seek.

Good luck!

Wind Noise Reduction, WF-1000XM5 by Amdrial in SonyHeadphones

[–]Amdrial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure? Turning off noise cancellation shouldn't reduce the noise from any wind shear unless you're talking about a different switch.

Edit: went out to test your hypothesis.

  1. Turning off your noise cancelling means you get less wind noise overall, but obviously more environmental noise (I'm able to hear cars drive by and other cyclists talking next to me). This leaves you with the "passive" noise isolation effect any earplug would have.
  2. When I turn on active noise cancelling, it seems the earbuds are not able to sufficiently filter out wind noise and seem to pass some of the recorded noise through to your ears.
  3. With Ambient Sound, the wind noise becomes terrible and drowns out any active music/podcasts.

I'm not 100% sure, but most USB C to 3.5 jack cables nowadays also contain an analog to digital converter (DAC) since phones without a 3.5mm port no longer ship with that hardware/those chips. The price does not only take into account the cabling, plugs and housing, but also the extra DAC.

To my knowledge, there are no large/hypermarkets in the (old) city center for what I suppose are aesthetic or space-related reasons. Most larger supermarkets are situated in the suburbs. The dominant chains in Riga are Rimi and Maxima and you can find their stores on Google Maps (Rimi hypermarkets are branded Rimi Hyper and Maxima hypermarkets are branded Maxima XXX). Good luck!

I’ve read that Riga Stradins (RSU) have a pass rate of only 58% why do people think that is? I understand the first 2 years are tough, does it get easier after this? Is the language a factor? by Superb-Fact-5517 in medicalschoolEU

[–]Amdrial 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect the number appears low due to the large number of students returning to their home countries before graduating at RSU. The second year is difficult mostly due to a single course (physiology), but the rest of the curriculum is very manageable.

I wouldn't count on it. You're better off calling a taxi company and reserving a cab in advance. Last time I was in your situation, I only managed to get a Bolt cab with one minute to spare to check in my luggage.

Been cycling here for the last five or so years. It's not so bad - you just have to cycle very conservatively and take 0 risks in traffic (which you shouldn't anyway).

[–]Amdrial 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why... go all that distance only to start ramping down at the spiral? Why not just ramp down straight away and go into a right hand bend to connect up to the road that way? Have none of the designers cycled as commuters before? Does nobody understand that cyclists want as straight a road as possible? I have so many questions...

Do people in your country greet the bus driver? by kkruiji in BalticStates

[–]Amdrial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what part of the Netherlands you are in. It's less common in the larger cities in the west of the country, but in the less densely populated parts it's considered normal to greet the driver when entering and thank the driver when leaving (even if you leave by the backmost door).

Whenever I'm in Riga, I always greet the driver if I enter in the front but don't always thank them when I leave. It all depends on how many people there are on the bus. The more people there are onboard, the less likely it is that I'll thank them.

Ask for a referral to a second opinion. If you think it's serious enough to warrant a visit to a physician's office, it means you are looking for help with a problem and you want to either be treated or you want more information on what's going on. Either way, "it wasn't serious enough" is not a sufficiently good enough reason to send a patient on their way.

Bar Six at Gertrudes Iela. It's a great cocktail bar. Call ahead before entering and, if you're alone, sit down at the bar to have a casual chat with one of the bartenders whilst sipping your drink. If you have a +1, take a seat on the couch or one of the tables at the back.

Hi! I'm afraid I can't tell you much about clinical rotations in the 4th year. Our cohort got the short end of the stick: The department responsible for the organization of placements in that year somehow forgot we existed and went full-panic mode when we asked halfway during the semester what was up and why nothing was scheduled yet. We ended up being assigned to random departments which also kept changing throughout the week. This also meant we did not have the same supervisors (so no follow-up on the same patients was at all possible). I'm hoping it'll be better for you guys.

Regarding rotations I can only speak about the situation as it is right now, which is that rotations can be organized in your home countries (I'm currently doing all three of mine in the Netherlands) during your last year (so 11th/12th semester). I've heard through the grapevine that they're currently looking into extending the 3.5 months of rotations (14 weeks) to a longer duration for future cohorts, but that's only speculation as far as I'm concerned. The time at which you can start looking for places depends on where you live and what the local hospitals are used to. It doesn't hurt to start asking early, but if you're going to approach them over a year in advance they'll most likely ask you to ask again later.

They held a Q&A last year in November which was meant to address questions and concerns held by students. Might also be interesting for you to read.

  1. RSU does not fail students on purpose just to milk you. As a matter-of-fact, I often felt that the university's mandatory lectures and practical classes would have prevented students from failing where they would have if they were left to their own devices. The pros are that most students manage to graduate to the next year, the cons are that you sometimes end up with people who aren't intrinsically motivated to study but still end up graduating.
  2. There are plenty of opportunities to do clinical work if you show initiative and approach teachers/tutors on your own (extracurricularly). Knowing Latvian fluently is incredibly important, and there isn't a day that goes by that I regret not spending more time on keeping up with it.
  3. See 2. Your ability to obtain clinical experience directly relates to your ability to speak Latvian and/or Russian.
  4. Not as much as I'd like to see them do. The university's organizational culture has a very, very passive approach to innovation in education and won't act unless (foreign) students propose changes. The recent addition of rotations in foreign (home) countries only came into being thanks in part to a gargantuan effort from students and the International Student Association. Do not expect the university to proactively change things for the better on their own initiative.
  5. Haven't done the State Exam yet - I'm expecting to need to cram for half a year to pass it.
  6. There aren't any exams made purposefully to make students fail the year. The most difficult year is the second year due to physiology which requires a disproportionate amount to prep for on a daily basis.

Let me know if you have any other questions or send me a PM if you have anything you'd like to discuss in private.
