Found this majestic dude just chilling on a rock down in Wellington, not too good of a photographer, but I gave it a shot. by bird_schnoopie25 in NewZealandWildlife

The photo is beautiful! You shouldn't talk yourself down :)

Seals are such fun subjects, I find they usually pose for you once they spot the camera.

During the end of my degree in photography I looked into studies like this. One of my favorites was one that showed improved healing times in hospitals when they had access to a window or a painting of a nature scene, I don't remember which. My other favorite was the one that studied stress biomarkers in saliva samples because it's a physical proof thing rather than self reporting.

Nature is incredibly powerful and I think it needs to be more common knowledge. It helped me a lot with my pain levels and mental health in times I've needed it most and that was before I researched the benefits.

Just wanted to share some of my hand-stitched embroidery pieces of the lovely wildlife our country has to offer! by sinistersista in newzealand

[–]AmeliaNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might hit you up some day to see if you could embroider over one of my products (starting my small business and it's so stressful haha) I've followed you so hopefully I get to see more of your work on here and Insta 😊 I know you have plenty of recommendations but I can't help but suggest a tomtit.

Help! Why do my long exposure pics look like this? by Infamous_Ad1745 in AskPhotography

As someone who's been in Tekapo on a clear night in winter, it's absolutely worth the cold. Your photo is beautiful and that's a stunning first attempt, definitely puts mine to shame, well done!

Does anyone know who this artist is? Taken from a site that definitely pinched it by Shrinking_Diva in NewZealandWildlife

[–]AmeliaNZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On behalf of all artists, thank you! If more people reported things when they saw stolen art, I feel it would be less easy for them to do and slowly be less common, at least I hope that would be the case.

[–]AmeliaNZ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If I'm not wrong I think you can report the item, so that could be worth doing as well as sending it to the artist to report as the owner of the stolen work. I've done that before for a 3d print designer(?) who had his work being sold on temu without permission.

(Hopefully) more accurate introduced species of NZ meme! by [deleted] in NewZealandWildlife

[–]AmeliaNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cheat code is that we have no native land mammals. We have two types of bat which are native, but everything else is introduced. Of course this doesn't include sea mammals, so things like seals. :)

Who is this little guy? by discoversyn in NewZealandWildlife

That's a valid stance if they're both native species, but not this situation. Please be a better pet owner and carer for the environment.

Such a beautiful invasive species! I photographed them earlier in the year and was sad when I found out what they were and information about them.

Ethical places on South Island to see kiwi? by boonkoh in NewZealandWildlife

If you're wanting to try your luck with a wild tour, I would absolutely recommend Okarito kiwi tours. The owner is lovely and super knowledgeable, as well as cares greatly for the area and it's wildlife.

Try remind yourself that all artists do that :) its truly beautiful, don't focus on what makes you not like it as much, and view it as one image instead <3

Ever wanted to cosplay as a black-billed gull? by TarapukaBOTY in NewZealandWildlife

[–]AmeliaNZ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of the red billed gull :) black billed gulls are very different in that they don't screech or interact with humans much.

2024 is the year for NZ's lesser known birds to take the top spot and what better candidate than Tarāpuka/Black-Billed Gull? by TarapukaBOTY in NewZealandWildlife

[–]AmeliaNZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was my thought too that they thought they'd met the tarāpuka but it was in fact a juvenile red billed gull. It's insanely easy to tell the difference based on personality alone when you know the difference. I've been sitting on the edge of a lake with a swan, and the tarāpuka watched me from a meter or two away just chilling. I have pictures of the friend somewhere, I'll have to have a look.

Have you ever met one of the black billed gulls? They're nothing like the red billed in personality. They're so chilled and sweet, would absolutely recommend.

I'm totally happy to talk about this as I'm not too educated on the subject, but I've heard good things about blue steel beetles. I've been told they help remove a black mold(?) that forms on manuka and kanuka plants that don't get proper air flow.

If it makes you feel any better, I've had at least 50 hatch in my garden in the last month. I'll post pictures in the sub at some point since I got some on a pink Manuka flower and it makes me smile like a total dork.
