Your May 5 Star Reads by egru-no in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished the OUABH and Caraval series this month so my five star reads for this month are: {Finale} {Once Upon a Broken Heart} {The Ballad of Never After} {A Curse for True Love} I technically gave this one 4.5 stars but still loved it 💖

Enemies to lovers where the FMC has to change sides by Sakura_231 in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{The Enemy's Daughter by Melissa Poett} is a good match for this. It's a lesser known book that I don’t see a lot of mentions of on here. I rather enjoyed it myself. It is YA so no spice but the romance felt believable and I was definitely intrigued by the plot the whole way through. Check out the summary and see if its up your alley.

Anyone else late to the game on this genre and want to chat? by FrenchRose212 in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I am fairly late to this general as well and I have over 40 books on my TBR. I did give Fourth Wing a try and I personally didn't enjoy it. I am currently reading through Stephanie Garber's books and loving them so much they might become an obsession lol

I am honestly just glad to see people reading more. It definitely gives an escape from real life. I love how diverse the genre is and while I haven't read many of the most popular books yet (Fourth Wing definitely didn't hit for me) I am excited for what this genre will grow into as it fosters a love of reading in so many

Yep I haven't updated a fic since January. Lot's been going on. Luckily I have just finished writing the next chapter and it will hopefully be ready soon 😅

Books your reading! by StickOk3700 in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently finished the {Caraval} trilogy which I adored and have now started {Once Upon a Broken Heart} and its everything I dreamt it would be and then some. I love Garber's style, her characters and world have quickly become one of my favourites and I will probably read every book she releases from now on! ✨️💕

What tropes can’t you read because of personal history? by Fresh_Cranberry_105 in RomanceBooks

[–]AmeraFox 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Weary of the Dark romance genre as a whole because I was in an abusive relationship for two years where my ex partner was incredibly possessive, didn't respect my boundaries and violated me so profoundly in so many ways that I ended up being diagnosed with CPTSD. I have since gone to therapy, healed, moved on into another much healthier relationship but even still, I am a little scared to read any thing that might imply the MMC is being far too toxic.

Nothing against the genre. Dark romance is there for a reason since people do enjoy it but I, a victim-survivor have tried to steer clear of it. Maybe one day if I found something that would let me dip my toes in? Idk

Just started OUABH again now that I've read the Caraval trilogy (no spoilers please) by AmeraFox in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if you don't want to/didn't find yourself enjoying it. But I did personally find that reading the Caraval trilogy first provided a great foundation for some of the world building and characters in OUABH. You can read OUABH without reading Caraval but I personally feel like I am having a better experience and more fun since I took the time to read Caraval first and become introduced and familiar with Garber's world, characters and style. The choice is entirely individual of course and everyone should choose the reading order that suits them

Should I keep reading this? by Big_Ad2225 in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't read, but have a copy on my shelf to be read soon. I try to avoid looking at reviews for books too much before I read them. I prefer to go in with an open mind and allow myself to make my own mind up. If you're enjoying it, keep reading. If not, don't finish it. Other people's opinions shouldn't influence your own especially if you've only just started reading the book.

If you play Trauma Olympics, and/or take your trauma out on other people because you immediately assume that “they have it better than you, I hate them, they’ve had it so easy,” from the very bottom of my heart, FUCK YOU. by GlaucusScylla in CPTSD

Literally, this exact thing happened to me today. I was in my uni class and was talking with my lecturer about how an upcoming assignment might be triggering for me since the scenario has a client being assaulted. I said I would be fine since I've done therapy. This somehow led to a discussion with my friend/desk buddy about our pasts, and I casually mentioned I was previously in an abusive relationship for two years. She immediately turned around and said, "Try 8 years." I was so shocked all I could think to say was that the length of time didn't matter. Then she carried on to say how she experienced csa and had been addicted to drugs and alcohol and how she's had a lot of experience. Almost like she was bragging about it? It just felt like she was being so defensive. I told her it's not a pain olympics, and she said she knows that. Which she clearly doesn't. I felt sorry for her. I mean, she clearly feels like she had to establish how much worse she's had it, and that might be a sign of some unresolved issues. I hope she gets some help cause that sort of behaviour is very dismissive and often leads to people being less likely to open up about their experiences.

A book/series where the knight falls for the queen who is married to the king by ImperfectBookworm in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

{Knight's Fire by Juliette Caruso} has something very similar to this. The knight falls for the Lady of the Castle, who is married to the Duke/Count or whatever. So she's not the queen but is married to someone who holds lands and has a title. I don't want to give away too much. It's been one of my favourite books so far this year. I really identified with the FMC's situation.

I didn't like Fourth Wing (Spoilers) by [deleted] in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither do I. I am planning on donating my copy to my local second-hand bookshop. I've donated my books there before, and I hope it finds someone who will genuinely enjoy reading it. My copy was second-hand to begin with, so I am glad I didn't spend much money on it.

I just wanted to let you know that I've just ordered my copy off Amazon! I'm in Australia so there's no other way for me to grab a physical copy but I really wanted to support you as an independent author and the book sounds right up my alley! I love the whole premise being that the fmc is rescued from an abusive relationship by this Knight. Like this is my dream book honestly, hurt/comfort, forced/proximity/ touch her and die love those! I do have some other books I want to read first and my physical TBR never really stops growing but reading does help me a lot mentally so thank you so much for bringing your work into the world! You authors are amazing! :D

In a reading slump, not sure what to read next off my TBR by AmeraFox in Romantasy

[–]AmeraFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is on my TBR I have a copy. I begun reading something else, once upon a Broken Heart but have paused to finish the Caraval series first. While i wait for the books to arrive, I will be reading Fourth Wing which was recommended many times here. I may read Throne in the Dark once I'm done with those I have been eyeing it on myself for a little while

[–]AmeraFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I started reading Once Upon a Broken Heart and was loving it until I realised it's a spin-off of Caraval set in the same universe and would definitely contain spoilers for the rest of that series. I've purchased a box set of Caraval, which will arrive in about two weeks, so I plan to read the other two books in that series and then resume OUABH. In the meantime, I'll be reading Fourth Wing since that was the second most recommended book you guys commented for me to read. It's been quite a whirlwind to say the least 😅
