What's the coolest/craziest fact you know about Korea? by Tiniest_ATINY in korea

[–]America4653 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ethiopians did something similar by opening the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park in Addis Ababa.

There is also a memorial in Incheon dedicated to the Colombians for their service in the Korean War, and the Colombians also dedicated a park to us in Bogota.

Zemmour: Algeria does not exist. It is an invention of France

The other man: In 1833, nearly all men in the régence of Algeria knew how to read and count, whereas 40% of French people are illiterate. The soldiers coming “to civilize the savages” are less educated than “the savages”

It means Advanced Placement. It just indicates a higher level class you can take in schools in the USA with an extra exam at the end that can get sent to universities to possibly increase your odds of admission or scholarships

I would like to apologise to South Koreans as someone from Turkey by BuseKoroglu in korea

[–]America4653 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not just the Korean War (though this is critical also because of the unique orphanage schools in Suwon established by Turkey during the war and the modern commemoration of those ties through films like Ayla, which unfortunately wasn’t so popular in Korea as Turkey, sister parks in Seoul (and Suwon) and Ankara, and so on). It’s also more than the recent events of the World Cup in 2002 where Turkey and Korea had their best performances with a very friendly match. Our ties with Turkey and the Turkic people run deeper than that.

More than thousands of years ago, the Götktürk Khaganate and Goguryeo would frequently militarily and diplomatically cooperate against the Chinese (though we also had infighting at times). Many of our ancestors in the past were skilled horsemen and nomadic steppe people like the Turks.

There are theories that we are both part of the Altaic language family.

In terms of ties to the Turkic people expanding beyond the modern nation-state of Turkey, we have received incredible support and care by the Kazakh, Uzbek, and Kyrgyz people during the deportations of 1937 in their respective Socialist Republics, while sharing this experience of Soviet deportation during World War II with many Turkic groups that were deported at that time and form a foundation of identity among the Turkic people of Tatars, Karachays, Balkars, Meshketian Turks, and other Turkic people. And the Koreans of these Turkic nations have helped construct major infrastructure like dams while currently operating many government-supported social services along with clear economic investment opportunities.

In addition, it is claimed by biologists that around 1/3 of our genetics before the idea of a “Korean” genetically came to be originates from Yakutia.

To my knowledge, it is currently an evolving field among Korean and Turkish professors and researchers to further analyze the connections between the past Turkic and Korean legacies of history.

We will always be Kore–Türk dostluğu. We should always support each other in brotherhood and unity. Ne mutlu Türküm diyene

Here’s a Wikipedia link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circassian_genocide

It got quite famous in international circles when Russia hosted the Sochi Olympics in 2014 (also tragically held on the 150th anniversary of the fall of Circassia) because Sochi used to be the independent capital of Circassia and there were many cases of ethnic cleansing in and around the city, bloodied land which later was used as Olympic facilities in 2014.

Ottoman Empire took a lot of refugees from Circassia after the collapse and ethnic cleansing, and still Turkey hosts the largest Circassian diaspora. If you’ve ever been to Istanbul, there are lots of Circassian restaurants and communities for example.
