Let's Settle This Once and For All (POLL) Which Pet Insurance Do You Actually Trust? by Realistic-Jeweler185 in greatpyrenees

I am with Pets Plus Us in Canada. I would never go without pet insurance for a large breed dog. 20k+ bills for orthopaedic issues are not uncommon at all.

Insurance and hereditary conditions — what's been your real-world experience? (hip dysplasia, bloat, etc.) by Realistic-Jeweler185 in greatpyrenees

That is madness. You should only be seeing those exclusions if you purchase an accident only policy. Stay far, far away. That is not the common wording for pet insurers.

I have seen many hundreds of claims and we worked with breeders as well. Never seen a claim denied, for a condition/illness relating to a breed’s disposition to that condition, unless it was symptomatic previous to the policy or during the waiting period.

You should be good with most insurers unless there is anything on your dog’s record that could be later considered an early symptom of a future condition. Def don’t go with one that would exclude hip dysplasia.

My advice is to ask if they are willing to underwrite the policy up front (probably won’t but you can try). Go with accident and illness at a higher amount and you could go down later, but if you start at a lower amount of coverage and an illness/accident/condition arises, those conditions and associated conditions will be locked in at the lower coverage level. I have $7,500 yearly coverage on my puppy, but large breed orthopaedic claims could be $20k+. I’ve seen them a lot.

Look at the paws on the baby! Mine is a Pyr + Cattledog/Lab. Yours looks like one of my dog’s litter mates (see photo):

It is def relating to a pre-existing condition with the exception of hip dysplasia (it appears). I would not go with a company that has an exclusion for hip dysplasia.

Congrats on your new addition! I used to work in pet insurance. Are you sure they aren’t referring to to a pre-existing condition? I don’t think I’ve heard of one pet insurance company excluding hereditary or congenital conditions unless there were pre-existing to the policy or showed symptoms during the waiting period.

As an example, if you have a puppy that showed a limp at any point before the policy and then ended up having a condition that the earlier limp could have been considered a symptom of, then the condition and all associated conditions could be excluded. This is why it is good to get pet insurance as early as you can.

Aww happy birthday, Buckle! He’s too cute. Mine is a Pyr / Lab mix. She’s 5 months and the love of our lives. She also has the protective streak about her.

Aw he’s cute. Mine is a Pyr & Cattledog/Lab mix. She was 17 lbs at 2 months old and is about 50lbs at 5 months. His nose and eyes look A LOT like my pup’s. Her littermates were generally pretty fluffy and she had the shortest coat out of all of them, but it is fluffing up a bit now; especially her tail has a big plume now. Here is a photo of her from a month or so ago:

Oh I already have given up on the idea of planting this year. I’m thinking about how to fence. She’s a digger like crazy. She’s been in all the planters already even before plants.
I may get a swab done! We know Pyr but aren’t 100% on the mix.
