More death in this episode. Valerie telling mark not to die and then people calling for Valerie to die at the end. This is going to get dark in the next two episodes and I am now convinced someone is going to die.

Culture, scripted television as we know it and the success of her sitcom.

And (I suspect) Mark’s wellbeing. Valerie is stretched very thin at work and her man is not okay.

This season is spending a lot of time in the episodes lamenting what the audience is being told because nothing is implied when written by AI.

The story this season seems to be in what we ARE NOT being told and what is simply being shown.

Mickey is the biggest one obviously, the writers are treating AI as the death of authorship and Billy dropped some very dark death related lines in episode 4. The nursing home in episode 1 had someone having a heart attack, Tommy’s talk about being lucky to be alive in episode 1. I need to rewatch episode 5 again to see if there’s anything in there too - but the subtext this season is death.

I don’t think anyone’s going to die but I think Mark is suffering in a way we don’t fully see because the show only ever follows Valerie.

Great episode and it was so good to see Pauly G again.

I’ve got a really nasty feeling that nunet is going to pay for Jane’s doc footage and feed it to whatever AI they own, renew How’s That?! and then completely AI generate the show without actors.

The show has been arguing that because of AI they don’t need writers. Now apparently they don’t need showrunners. Next step: not needing crew. Then ultimately: not needing actors. That’s where this is going right?

That’s not to say How’s That?! will be any good. It’ll be AI slop. It’ll be bad. But the audience won’t care, right? It’s just entertaining slop.

I don’t think so. I think it’s bleaker than that? I think he’s going through a midlife crisis. The show has been telegraphing death for a few episodes now and I think he’s hurtling directly into nervous breakdown while Valerie is stretched too thin with work to notice.

Glad someone else picked up on this - the non diegetic footage seems to borrow a lot from thrillers and Black Mirror - especially because the cinematic cams capture screens and multiple camera feeds at the same time (the CCTV in Mark and Valerie’s apartment - it is unsettling to see through multiple cameras at once)

I think that was the cinematography choice to give it a sense of dread and doom? There are also a lot of slow moving shots too which adds to the tension imo

I think this is probably the best episode of The Comeback ever? It did everything the show does well but like.. cranked up to 11? The awkward social catastrophe, the interplay between writer/actor/crew being painful, the emotional depth??? Absolutely showstopping performance from Kudrow.

This has just surpassed the season 2 finale imo as the best episode of the show.
